Stands for Anvils, Swage Blocks, etc

  1. Started by Chris C,

I've been doing some hot metal pounding and have realized I pretty consistently strike heavy at the 6 o'clock point on my hammer. Which obviously means my anvil is too high for me. Right now it's at 32 1/2". I get reasonably consistent strikes on the chisel table, which is approximately 3/4" lower than the face of the anvil.. Okay, no problem.................just put a piece of 3/4" plywood on the floor in front of my anvil and see if that corrects the problem. If so, I'll take the anvil off my stump, flip the stump and take 3/4" off the bottom. But............................................I've read where many knife makers prefer their anvils face to be higher (so…

I just purchased my first real anvil. I built a wood stand. But there is the slightest wobble between the stand and the anvil. 1 I could sand the top of the stand to try for a better fit but it would be hard. 2. I could put caulk between the stand and anvil. 3. I could cut a piece of plywood to put between the anvil and stand. I am planning on securing the anvil with angle iron clamps. Any advice? thanks kurt

My Son and Heir suggested we should retain the bark as long as possible so today I finished the top band...The Red Gum bark varies fron 3/4" to 2" thick so had to do some smoothing out to the vertical to use a 4" wide 14# gal. band...Will also allow Brkts,Hooks,Pins etc to hang /rest from.My neighbour has a bobcat to roll and prop for the Bott. band...Cheers.

  4. Evening all - Im just starting out and bought myself an anvil and made a stand - I designed it myself but copied from a number of other stands I have seen in use. The anvil is a relatively perfect 400 Lb Peter Wright. It was a bit rusty but a good wire brush and linseed oil has it looking fantastic. The stand weighs about 100 Lbs so the combined weight is substantial. Legs full of sand etc...top plate is 1" thick, I have drilled a couple of holes through and have two hook bolts onto the chain that surrounds the waist of the anvil. There is a 2 mm rubber sheet between the anvil and top plate. It is absolutely solid. I am loving getting started and learning bits as I go. I …

I am a firm believer in mass under your hammer should be as solid as possible. So this is were I started for the mount of my Italian Piggy. It is in transit from Italy, should be here in about 2 weeks. The cedar log is buried 3' in the ground. It has a tendon cut on the top to accept a 6 X 8 X 1/4" rectangle steel tube. I scratched my head for a few days on how I wanted to keep the stand column in place and firmly attached to the stump tendon. I first made a square washer out of 1/4" plate to fit around the tendon. This will prevent the 1/4" thick steel column from digging into the top 9f the stump. I lag bolted the base of the column to the …

I love to have shelves on the anvil stand.. I also like them to articulate so they can be moved out of the way or put into any position I need them in.. Also under the pritchel hole or hardie hole to catch drifts or items pushed thru the hole.. this way they can land in a can full of water and it speeds up the process.

Hi. If you could help identifying the maker of this anvil base stand. I also have the 23 inch anvil as well. The markings on the picture are on the base stand I am going to have another look at the anvil to see if there are any marks on that. We have to let it go as we are retiring and intending to downsize outer house. Many thanks in advance

Hello, I was wondering, could you make a tripod style anvil stand for a 242 pound anvil, with traintrack for legs and a really really heavy plate ? I know, it would get really heavy, but it isn't a movable stand anyways, and I have a crane to move it around. bad idea given that it's hard steel and not plain mild steel ? mvg; bart

I fabricated an anvil from a couple chunks of steel, and now need a stand for it. I've found a gum tree that's died, and not fallen yet. I think it may still be solid enough if I cut it down tomorrow. Some of the bark is starting to come off, but I think it may just be where the horses chewed it. Will Sweet gum be a decent anvil stump?

  10. Started by Katerine,

I'm getting ready to make my anvil stand and plan on forging sitting down. I currently have the anvil sitting on a moving dolly I got from Tractor Supply, rated for 1000 lbs. Staring at it, trying to figure out how to approach this, the thought hits me...why not build the stand with the dolly as a base? Would this be asking for trouble or...? I can lift it (barely), but can't walk with it, so I need my anvil stand and forge on wheels. The forge is easy...I'm concerned about making sure I get the anvil right.

So since I am using a modified vertical railroad anvil, in trying to problem solve for some of the areas its lacking in. Unfortunately, I can't weld/don't have a welder. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to drive down 1 inch interior square tubing into my anvil stand to create a hardy hole? Some problems I foresee but don't know how realistic they are: 1. The anvil is blocking access to 1 side of the hardy and would be a danger to any wild swings. 2. I may crack the 2x6's from both creating and using the hardy. 3. The hardy would be significantly lower than it should and that could be problematic. Am I worrying for nothing…

  12. Has anyone tried the Cliff Carroll Anvil Stump? I don't really like the price on it, but I think it looks really nice and like the idea of adjustable height. I don't know how well those aluminum legs hold up with pins to set the height over time. I would think the holes could oval with using it as a light blacksmithing portable stand. It looks like Emerson and Delta make stands about the same as well. Commercial link removed. I'm probably going to make my own stand, but I do wish I could find a use CC anvil stump cheap, but also don't know how well they hold up over time either. I can see places listing them for sale, but I can't really find reviews on …

Now this is something you don't see everyday. A 150kg cast anvil stand supporting a 180kg north German style anvil. Have any of you seen this type of stand before?

  14. Started by Matthew2,

I am building a stand for a new anvil and have decided on a three legged stand. I have been trying to figure out what size top plate I should use. I already have some 3/4 plate. Is that thick enough or should I purchase something thicker? I also wonder how people prefer the size of their top plate relative to their anvil. Close fitting to get up close and personal or larger to provide room for tool storage? Thanks.

This is my anvil and base. The base is a big ol’ pine log. Pine was not my first choice (or 2nd or 3rd) but when you live in an area with no trees, you take what you can get. As expected, the log is splitting. I’m wondering if it would be worth it to try to forge some straps to go around the log to keep it together. How would you go about forging such a thing? I was thinking I’d put a 90° bend about an inch from each end of a long piece of 1” wide weld steel, drill holes in the 1” tabs, bang the weld steel to shape right on the log, then tighten it down with a bolt through the holes.

Hello everone. I am making a striking anvil from 2.5" steel plate. My plan is to weld it to a another .5" plate slightly larger with 3 2x2" 3/16" thick legs. My issue is that most of the striking anvils I have seen the second plate is much thicker or there are a series of stacked plates of varying thickness. Is there something I am missing or are those just extra plates there for a good reason?

I'm sure there was a thread on this but I can't find it. Are there any advantages/ disadvantages of a metal stand over a wooden block? Considering building a metal stand for my anvil. I've always thought a really solid wooden stand would absorb more of the noise or vibration than a metal stand no? Cheers Andy

  18. Found an oak log with the correct height and size to mount my anvil a few days ago. Am looking for tips on good ways to remove the bark. Also what would be a good finish to use to seal the log to prevent rot. I live in florida and so humidity is always high. I've already figured out the mounting once I have it cleaned up.

I have nearly a yard of 136# rail and have been pondering how to make a stand for it. Since the shape is so irregular I was thinking about standing it in a garbage can and filling it with sand. I've looked through the improvised anvil thread and didn't see anyone else doing this. It seems like the easiest solution, but maybe there's a reason I haven't seen anyone else doing it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Pnut (Mike)

Hello, I'm just started pounding metal a few weeks ago. Up now, I used rocks as anvil until they cracked. Today, I found a chunk of steel plate thats about 6 inch long, 3 inch wide and 3/4 inch thick. I intend to secure it to a log and use it as my anvil. What are the best way to mount it? Should I just try to drill a hole in it and bolt it to the log? Also, is spruce log good enough or should I try to find something else. I only have spruce and aspen on my property.

Hey guys, first time poster, sorry if in wrong category. I've bough this small anvil for 15€ but I can't figure out how to secure it as it has a spike on the base. I've done some research and found nothing like it, any help will be appreciated.

  23. Started by Ted Ewert,

I've been working on this after work all week. The concrete slab under the stand is not level which has caused a few headaches. Nevertheless, I managed to get thing pretty level. The top of the stand is 24" high. Thats a little lower than my other stand, but my knuckles are still below the anvil face. Knuckle height is a little too low for me. I started by bolting down a base and working up from there The base material is 1 1/2" X 1/4". The four outside rebars are 5/8", and the two in the middle are some 3/4" I found out behind my shed. These are all welded into some angle iron to support the top plate. I made the top plate from some …
