Stands for Anvils, Swage Blocks, etc

  1. This anvil stand was built with a desire to correct the stands prevously made.. this is version 3.. (1" steel plate) The reason I call it the Black Widow is from the only revision I made which was so I could stand close to the center so made room by pulling in the center bar.. This stand was designed to be used on dirt, clay, stone, or cement.. It is dished in the base so only the outside edge will make contact.. It does not rock on cement that is not flat.. This outer edge also keeps the stand from sliding around.. I reinforced the side plates and put in the pass thru for the hardie hole.. Also the side angles allow for n…

I suppose I don’t know the correct blacksmith term but the use of a chain or item other than a Pritchett hole hold down to work as a third hand while forging. I added this chain secured by a pull pin and weighted on the other end by a 5lbs cylinder. I also had to add some angle iron to the edges as the chain was chewing up the edges of my anvil stand. I’m interested in what everyone else uses.

Thought I’d post pictures of a new anvil stand build. The pipe is 12” diameter 3/8” wall. The round plates that will be on the bottom and top is 16” diameter 3/4” thick. The 4” square tubing will be welded To the center of the plates and lend additional rigidity. The interior of both square and round pipe will be filled with sand.

I'm going to get a new anvil sometime in the near future, somewhere in the 200+ Lb range, and I've been thinking about the stand. A bunch of 4X4's all strapped together, like many guys have built, first came to mind. Then I started thinking about the stand as an extension of the anvil mass. To make a long thought process short, I was thinking of casting a column of reinforced concrete as the core element, surrounded by 4X4's. I'm thinking that this would would transfer the shock to the slab better than wood. Do you guys think that this idea is worth the trouble?

I recently picked up a decent sized stump to use as an 'anvil' and have run into a problem. I was working a piece of 90 degree 1/8" x 1" x 5" shiny mystery steel in my jabod forge (without air pump, that comes tomorrow) and was able to straighten it on my stump with no problems (except crazy lungblowing, cherry red) and when I went to form the profile it just kept driving itself into the wood. I was gonna work on something that resembles a knife...that's my problem and I don't know where to go next. Tomorrow when I get my air hooked up and it get's even hotter I anticipate that it will penetrate the stump even more thus I am stuck until I solve this. Anybody got a cheap …

As I'm finishing up the mounting of my anvil & it's base I was wondering if anyone has added an upsetting block to their anvil base. If so what is the thinnest you would consider usable? Anyone have photos of their set up? Arrow indicates where I'm interested in installing one.

Hello! I'm still very new to I forge iron. I recently just finished building my first forge and I completely forgot about a stand for my anvil. I actually bought my anvil from a craiglist deal for almost nothing. Not sure if it's any good but I'm sure it's better than not having one. I read multiple articles about stand design and I'm just gonna keep it simple and try and make something from home depot. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for materials. Thinking of just buying some wood and make something this weekend. Also if you guys have any suggestions about my anvil I would also appreciate that. Thanks!

  8. Hi there, I could use a little assistance in finding a round of hardwood to mount my anvil on. Dimensions around 14 to 16 inches across and 22 to 24 inches tall. Open to any suggestions. Thank you!

  9. Shared my first anvil a couple of weeks ago and now wanted to share the stand I made for it. Got a fancy anvil and a stump that was too big. Step one. Rented a chainsaw and did rough cuts to get it close to where I want it. First step after rough cutting with the chainsaw was to make sure the top and bottom where flat and level. I made "good enough" router sled rails and a quick router sled to make it smoooooth. Router sled working on the sides. Also, at some point I used a low grit carbide cup wheel on my angle grinder to cup the bottom of the stand. The purpose of doing this, or so I'…

  11. I'd like to silence my Boker Trenton anvil and have read everything here in the threads. I forged two Z clips for the front & back feet and I routered out the shape of the anvil base into my stump. I'd like to silicone calk it down before bolting down the Z clips. My question is if I just put a bead around the edge or do I cover the whole bottom in silicone calking? I don't want a super mess but want it to work. I've been using it for about 6 months just sitting in the routered-out stump and because it's 179 lbs it doesn't move a whole lot except when I'm out on the horn. I don't particularly like wearing ear protection so it'd be nice to get my old gal to st…

My Nephew and I wanted to get a stand for his forklift tine anvil and with the exception of some Simpson Strong Tie straps and braces we were able to put it together using stuff I had on hand. The handle to move it will be taken off once we have the anvil in place but I am VERY happy not to have to try and drag that thing around. Man this thing is HEAVY!!!!

  14. Started by Pr3ssure,

I saw this anvil and stand in the "Show me your anvil" section of the site. I was wondering what the ties on the anvil stand are called or if they are probably something that's custom made. I like the idea to use for a quick and easy stand. If anyone knows what they are and where to get them much appreciated.

So I'm gonna be buying everything I need to make a nice anvil stand this weekend and I'm wondering if there's any certain types of wood I should try and get. I'm probably going to use 4x4s or 2x12s and glue them and run an all thread rod through to keep it secure. I was wondering though about how to anchor the anvil to the stand. I was thinking about putting hooks on the stand and running chain around it from two sides and using something to tension it, I know some things to do it but don't remember what they are called. Also what are good ways to secure the stand to the floor/ground, I will have it on concrete. I think with my anvil being 161 pounds with a solid sta…

Is it a good idea to make an anvil stand out of reinforced concrete? I was going to put tubing in in it so I can secure the anvil with crossed bands.

I'm just getting started and I got a nice 185# PW anvil a few weeks ago. I contacted a friend in the tree removal business and told him I wanted a piece of oak to use to mount the anvil on and he said the next live oak he got, that he would contact me. He explained that live oak was more rot resistant than the other oak species in our area. Since then we had 3 large cedar trees blown over at our church. We removed them ourselves and milled most of it into lumber however there is a piece that's to short to mill that could be used for an anvil mount. At first I was thinking it might be too soft, and I might loose some of the benefit of a harder material. However, I th…

  18. I finally started my new Anvil Stand, my existing one is about six inches too low and i wanted to upgrade. I read about Anvil Stand, wood vs metal, and decided it was my way to work with wood because there was a lot of it just laying around Building Sites, so wood won out. I may after using this one for a while decide it is time for a Steel Stand but for now wood it is ! This is a run down on how i did it based on a Thread by Stash/Steve. Cost, not sure: Wood was free, all the screws I used were left overs from the house remodel, I purchased is the Adhesive, the Threaded Rod w/Nuts, Flats and Locks and the Angle Iron for the Router Table. So this is…

I acquired a 5"x 30" hydraulic breaker bar from a friend. It appears to be very tough tool steel. I'm not sure what alloy but speculate it's 40 series or D2? I've drawn up some idas for mounting it vertically and am looking for some input. I'm not going to try to weld on this metal so I've come up with a couple of ideas for mounting. I've seen the ones where they drop it in a 4 gallong bucket of cement, however I'm looking for somthing a little more refined. One can google Japanese knife maker anvil to see what I'm talking about. I've bored out a couple pipes to already do option A, a stand alone low anvil, but am second guessing myself with option B. …

I have been working on a new stand for my PW, since I purchased the anvil two years ago. I gathered the wood, construction lumber, and started thinking about how I was going to start the project. I started thinking my garage floor is level, checked with a level, should be able to get the wood glued together and flat. Predrilled over size holes to allow for adjustments, should work. Got some threaded Rod, nut, flats and locks, let's get started. Spread the construction adhesive, slide all of the pieces together, snugged up the nuts banged the boards to make sure they were all sitting flat, tightened the nuts and added clamps, all, done right... Portable anvil stand. Got tired of dragging 150 pound anvils around for demos. Got this little Vulcan in a trade and decided to make a stand for it. No nails or fasteners. Gravity and the two wooden keys lock it all together. Made out of one wide poplar plank.

I have been working on some projects. This one is a quick stand for my anvil. I did not have any large lumber to build from. I did have a few 2 x 4s left over from a different project. So i used them to build the stand below. The pic with the anvil is the test fit. After that pic I dissembled the stand and put it back together with construction adhesive. The top and bottom have been sanded to remove any high spots. It is very rigid. I need it to be moveable for now. If it proves to be to light I have thought about filling it with sand. Any feedback is welcome. Thanks for looking. Mel
