Was going to build a electric/cam powered hammer but changed my mind. Building a copy of this machine. So far I have a 16lb. sledge hammer head and a homemade flywheel.

I got another 4 hours graft on my tyre hammer build today and I think it's coming on a treat. I finally got some 4mm welding rods and finished off the welding of the box sec. spine to the 50mm base plt. The result is approximately a 15mm fillet made up of 6 runs. With 3.25's, 1 in and 2 over then with the 4mm's, 3 over those The other thing I did today was drill and tap the 4 M16 holes in the corners of the 50mm, 140×140mm plt, which will then be welded to the top of the anvil post. This is how I'm going to fix the anvil dies or blocks(not sure what they're called)to the anvil post. So that was today's progress I'm getting close to attaching the drive motor…

I watched a lot of power hammer builds on YouTube so I decided to build one myself. I really just like to build machines, and this one will also happen to be useful. I went to the steel yard and bought a bunch of "cutoff's", which they sell for 60 cents a pound. I got some H beams, 3/4" plate and some other heavy bar stock. I built the anvil first, which I'll reference everything else to. It has a comfortable working height and is composed of a 5" X 5" H beam on a 3/4" thick base. I beefed the top up a little by adding some inserts inside the beam as well as a couple of gussets. The top plate is attached by 4 bolts which screw in from underneath. I …

Hi to all out there, I like to show you my new toy. It is a treadle hammer inspired by an photograph out of the book: The Smithy´s craft and tools by Otto Schmirler. He worked as artisan blacksmith in Vienna during the earlier middle of the last century. In his book he gave an immense overview over tooling and the works done with these tools. A little section is included where he showed his design of a treadlehammer, with some measurments. I spent a lot of time drawing the construction via CAD and recently I found the time to built it. Now it is ready, and here are some pictures. It works very fine, the fact that the hammerhead itself describes a circular path …

hi folks big hello to the forum so I am the process of resurch how to build a air power hammer. I am pretty confident on the fabrication design but have had no experience of pneumatic s so I"ve been trying to research the valving systems i think I"ve got my head around the principles from looking on YouTube etc at various diy builds andi came across this diagram somewhere and had been studying it , the problem is I am not sure exactly about the valve types can anybody point me in the right direction or tell me if these are correct Pneumatic Valve 5/2 5/3 Way Shako SK520-04S(D) SK530-04D 5/2 way single or double acting and 5/3 way. I'm just about done with my junkyard tire hammer. I've used oil infused ultra high molecular weight plastic as liners in the ram guide. Is it advisable to use it that way without any additional lubrication, or is it common practice to use some lightweight oil there as well?

  7. Some pictures of the 600lbs Niles Bement Pond steam hammer I recently brought up from Texas and set up. I ran it on steam to begin with, but currently I'm using air from a 185CFM diesel compressor and a 500 gallon tank, with 2'' hose connecting everything. it hits darn hard, but will be in need of a rebuild sometime soon. I built a motion lever mechanism very similar to the one Grant Sarver had, and it works absolutely tremendously. I'll make a youtube video about it at some point, but there is some videos of it running on my Instagram: @ethanharty I will try to add more pictures later, as I keep getting an error message:)

  8. A guy I met has an uncle with a 50lb little giant hammer in good working condition he is wanting to sell. Said he'd take $3000 and no less. I do not have any specifics on the hammer. Comes with a 3 phase converter. I am going to look At it this week. My question is..... For $3000 is this hammer worth purchasing. I know I have the tools and fabrication ability to make my own mechanical hammer as I do not have a sufficient compressor for running an air hammer. Should I just build my own hammer? As far as time is concerned I do not need this hammer right now however as soon as I get it I know it will speed up my work efforts. So I'd say If it took…

Made a trip to the steel yard, and was offered the friend price if I bought from the scrap pile outside. Drew this up.... I'm thinking 12" timbers underneath. The 2" layer is a 2 by 24 round piece of mild. The 14 by 7 is round, and the top 6.5 is round. Total weight minus timbers is the numbers on the right, roughly 650. Will this be better, worse, or equal to a similar weight of round stock?

Hello all, I've been designing a power hammer forever to dish steel plate 1/8" and heavier. I don't think I'll ever tackle the project. It occured to me that I might have some level of success by reconfiguring my 100# Little Giant. I could remove the sow block and design a lower female die with a corresponding top male die extension devetailed into the ram. Has any one tried something like this or seen something similar? I never see any tooling designed for the sow block position and I wonder what's been done. -Adair

I think it's been a few years since I've been active on here. I've been lurking, mind you, just haven't been signing on or offering my 2 cents. Hope everyone is enjoying their lockdown! So here's a little fun project I decided to throw together since I haven't been able to teach classes here at the forge for the past few months. Firstly, it's picture heavy. Second, it's not my first rodeo with building a hammer. In the past I've built Kinyon style hammers, this is my first mechanical hammer build though. Third, you're right, I could have just bought the plans from Clay Spenser instead of wasting my time doing things the hard way, I even spoke with Clay on the phone but s…

Does anyone have any info on this style hammer? I am buying it but dont know much about it. It is listed as being in good working order. There is no info on tup (bär) weight. Mainly what I'm interested in is the ram weight. I will try and get some more pictures.

  15. I'm selling a power hammer for a friends estate and havent yet decided on the price. Its a Bull 125 in perfect running condition. I'd like to hear what you guys think. Compairable (new) Big blue 155 at $6200 and (new)Iron Kiss 125 at $7800 of course dont tell the whole story , but it seems a good point of reference. It doesnt need to be a quick sale, the property isnt for sale and the space doenst have to be cleared quickly. We will be keeping the compressor in place and hooked up so it can be tested by possible buyers. My friends wife is the daughter of a blacksmith and having hammer sitting in the shop for awhile longer wont bother her at all. Opinions? There…

  17. So far not crazy about the way the plans are drawn out and written. Not too bad, but lack detail and have had to back up a little a couple times and re think how to do something to get it to come out rite. Not a big deal, but irritating at times. Anyway, I've got the main construction done, about to start on the turnbuckle and leaf spring linkage. I have a couple of questions, mainly the springs. The coil springs Clay list, the plans say "Bend spring into a "U" and heat a spot on the center coil with a torch until it separates. Bend out a 2 turn loop, cold on each end" Am I overthinking things, or just bend in a "U" and heat the middle and grab a couple loops w…

I started a Rusty hammer yesterday. It’ll probably take me three or four weeks more work to finish, but I have a few pictures from day one. Yesterday we did most of the major cutting, layout, and engineering. This kind of project is like building from a tub of Legos. You know what you want to build, find the pieces you have that will work, and you put it together. It’s not at all like building Legos from a set. The head of the hammer will be about 40 pounds, and the anvil around 400. I have a 32" length of 5 1/2" solid that'll go inside that green sleeve in the pics. Layout on the floor... we don’t need no stinking plans, LOL. Most of the big parts la…

Hello all, I stumbled across this today at my work. It was tucked away in a barn and if it’s not some sort of power hammer, I don’t know what it would be. It has a short stroke, about 1.5” and there’s a small transformer on the top side of the rear wheel. Any ideas of what it could be if not a power hammer? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I have been working on a Bradley hammer i recently got. It was originally set up similarly to a line shaft but with its own motor and pulley system mounted in the roof structure above it. The motor drove a large pulley on the same shaft as a smaller pulley which drove the main crank shaft pulley. There was a canvas /rubber ? belt from the motor to the large pulley and a leather belt from the secondary pulley to the slack belt system to the machine . The leather belt on the slack belt clutch side is old and and dry but not completely ruined and I haven't gotten a new leather belt yet . What do I use to soften and treat the leather belt on a slack belt system ? …

  23. I am a manufacturer of low carbon ferro chrome - an alloy of iron and chromium with bulk density of 7.15 gm/cubic cm. In my current process, the finished product is generated in the form of a solid button shape slab (or a flat cylinder shape slab) with diameter of about 3 feet and thickness of about 80 to 100 mm. This product is extremely hard (as can be seen from the bulk density) and is very difficult to break. My requirement is to break down the material into smaller lumps of sizes 10 to 50 mm. Today the breaking is done by manual labors who continuously hit the slab with 10 kg hammers to break down the material. This process is extremely time consuming as the mat…

Hi everyone, I saw this idea in a rough sketch on pinterest about 5 years ago, and only recently managed to get around to trying it out. Hopefully this will start a new type of cheap power hammer for us novices I like to call a "Diff hammer". Basically, you power the tail shaft on an open rear vehicle diff, then brake the opposing wheel to send force to the hammer drive. Made exclusively from free parts, excuse the welding of a few novices. This is powered by a 3hp DC treadmill motor, using the treadmill front drive roller as the drive wheel for a V belt, but a flat belt would also work. The plans were to link the two brake levers together, so th…
