Got a new power hammer. Talked with Dave, over at littlegianthammer, and he said it was originally sold in 1947. Needs a decent amount more work, but it's getting there. Melted out the old babbit bearings, and poured new. Now it's time to start painting and reassembling.

Gentlemen, I thought that I might post this in a place dedicated to the whole thing. It has been a road - longest single self-imposed project I have completed. My new Power Hammer - Sweetie named her "Hamela Hammerson" because, as I have said quite frequently, all machines are female. So, a couple of years ago I finally got an anvil and a little propane forge. I set about drawing out a piece of rebar and within ten minutes I decided that my health required a power hammer (excellent excuse, no?). The Little Giants are out of my price range, and there aren't any around anyways (except for the one that showed up at the scrap yard when I was halfway through…

  6. Hey all, I've never had a VFD in my shop, and I've never operated a VFD anywhere before. Yesterday I was setting up a used Striker 88 complete with Delta VFD controlling a 3phase, 5 hp motor. The power load matched what I had available in my shop, 240 50 amps. I plugged in the hammer and the VFD powered up momentarily then shut off. It it did not trip the breaker and now there is no power to the outlet. The outlet was installed by a commercial electrician and I have been running my other power hammer and welder regularly from the same supply. I'd like to know if there is something I overlooked in operating a VFD before I call an electrician. I have the m…

Hi guys, I need advice and I believe I can have it here. I have opportunity to buy Alldays & Onions 2cwt power hammer. I know nothing about power hammers ... especially this manufacturer. It used to be in a railway workshop but last ten years it is not in use. It is in a backyard of one blacksmith workshop. It was left in working condition but who knows what has happened these years ... and, yes it's disassembled and it is not possible to see it working. I'd like to know what should I pay attention of? According to photos it is complete. I suppose 2cwt is power of hit, 2 x112 lbs ... I'd say it is a serious punch? I believe some of you guys…

My tire hammer locked up today when one of the bottom retaining clips broke off. It really locked everything up. I had to carefully cut the the opposite side clip off to free things up. I've had trouble with the shims for quite awhile. The shims often slip by the retaining clips. My question is, when I put it back together, how much play is allowed for the hammer's head in the guide weldment? Thanks.

Got this home yesterday but still need to get off the trailer as it’s about 2 ton and my friends digger didn’t lift it, it’s a 125lb tup, needs a little work, no idea of the year, trying to find out how deep the footing should be and any other information, it’s a little big for my small shop so I need to make an extension.

So as some here might know, the smithy here has had a Demoor powerhammer in the corner, without a motor and some other things, but good news to everyone who is saddened by those words, it now has a motor and those other things, only problem is the wheel on the motor is too small so it's hitting too fast, but that will be fixed very soon when we get a hold on a new wheel first time turning it on and here's a damascus billet being welded with it. (action starts at 3:15)

  11. This is a power hammer , powered by 2 men ,Approx 1953 when I was 16. My elder brother & I had the experience of using A 2 man sledge hammer seem to remember it weighed 40. Odd pounds , used for breaking up very thick scrap cast iron into handleable lumps which could be put into a furnace. To melt for making new castings. These great big pieces were left on the ground all year. Until a heavy frost came, when the frosty day arrived. Our dad would say get out the dummy ( this was the nick name for this hammer) and attack the iron because in the frosty weather the iron woul turn brittle &crack easier, I see a photo of one on you tube today ,spose it’s redundan…

First I have no experience with neither hydraulics nor pneumatics so this is all based on internet research. I have been crunching numbers for a new hydraulic press primarily looking at speeding up my air over hydraulic 20ton (a lost cause I think) and had the thought: Could you make a combination hydraulic press/hammer? Using a 2hp 120v two stage pump producing 1.37gpm @ 2500 psi and 5.27gpm @650. It would have 2 cylinders. A 4" one that would generate ~16 tons @2500psi and 1.6in/sec @650psi and .4in/sec @2500 psi for the press (think Coal Iron Works 16ton press) and a 1" one generating ~1 ton @2500psi and 6in/sec and 1/4 ton (500lbs) @65…

Built myself a tire hammer over lockdown. 12.25" Diameter anvil. Approx 30kg tup. I over built in a few areas for example the main spine of the hammer is 8mm wall rather than the 5mm wall specified in the plans. Works well. Cheers Andy

Hey, I've been building my workshop for a year now inside a barn. My dad and I put up the ceiling over the summer. Next up is the floor which we will tear out, insulate and pour anew, but before that I have to pour the power hammer foundations. I have 3 hammers. One for each hand! I'm just about to start digging the pits. Funny thing is the power hammer foundations can't be moved later, so I've got to look over the layout well before-hand. The layout as it is right now is certainly not set in stone yet, or concrete. I'm making all this up as I go. Perfect way of doing things. Looking at the layout now, the big 75 kg/165 lb Mammutwerke hammer could perhaps be put wher…

  17. HI everyone. I ran a 8000lb double action erie steam hammer for 30 yrs. I've seen a lot old hammers. A lot from the 1800's. I now volunteer at my communities heritage village as s blacksmith. I've personally used a few of those knucklebuster hammers. Now I'm looking for a few different style hammers for forging museum we have at the village. The 3 I would like find are a helve hammer(think I found one), a chambersburg 300lb hammer, and most important to me personally,Because it was Canadian made, is any size "Lil Giant" or "Moyer" hammer. Think theres only a 25lb, 50lb, and 100lb. Configuration. Any help or direction in the right way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks y…

Finally found my "grail" hammer after 20+ years of keeping my radar out. Ive owned alot of hammers, but could never seem to find a Bradley Compact 100, or when I did find one for sale it was 2000+ miles away. A good friend notified me of this one last monday morning about 6:30 am. I immediately sent the seller a message, not asking any questions or for more pictures or to look at it,... I simply started "I will buy this hammer", as the price was beyond good and I could see from the photo that it was all there and other than a coating of heavy dust look to be in good condition. Several hours go by with no response, so I'm already convinced the hammer has sold…

  21. Finally got round to scanning this in. It is a bit big I am afraid, 9.3mb, if anybody wants to reduce it down a bit and repost it be my guest! I did knock it down to 6.7mb but some of the specification numbers became illegible. I did check it was okay with John Nicholson to post this as he is the supplier and restorer of Massey Hammers in the UK now. I will post the hammer installation information on a separate thread. I saw this a few weeks ago on ebay and decided to take a punt on it. the ebay photos were basic so I was not exactly certain what I was purchasing but you have to take a chance..... The hammer was described as working and I checked that it was before it was dismantled for collection. It seemed to work quite well. I brought it home yesterday on the back of a rental truck and aside from accidentally bringing a non compliant hgv into london and having to pay a £200 quid fine .....!!!!! all went well apart from that!!! So here she is after a degrease and jet wash..... I think that this is an older type hammer, there is a more modern looking pilkington that Mick Maxe…

  23. Hey all I am now looking to buy a power hammer but i dont really know which weight class i should be looking at or if a Self contained air hammer is better than a mechanical. I usually work smaller stock but i also want to have capacity to take on bigger work, including production work, in the near future. I have been looking at three power hammer brands and one used one. The first one is an old, used but refurbished spring hammer which has a ram weight of 70kg (yes, thats correct. you a writing to someone from the metric system) The brand is Strojaren Prako from the czech republik from 1964, but is currently in germany. Hey all, just got my Beaudry Peerless No. 2 into my shop! I got this hammer from a gentleman named Ryan in Connecticut, and he told me it had been in storage since 2003! He restored it and ran it for years off a line shaft up there. Ive got the pounding out profits pages that mention the peerless, and some photos ive found online, but id love any and all other information I can get! Kevin Willey and I spoke about it and he helped me out with some info, but I would love to see if anyones got a photo of the sales page from a catalog or something. Id like to learn everything I can about this beauty! Ill be spending the next couple weeks getting it running and am excited to s…
