I have been sort of letting this project evolve for some time, but it is starting to come together now. I started with the main gearbox, which came of of some kind of giant, industrial squishing machine. I mounted that on a steel post, and started figuring how to make the rest with scrap in my shop I made a couple of super basic die sets out of 440 stainless- The mechanism allows me to adjust the space between the hammer and anvil on the downstroke from zero to about 2 inches, which can be increased a little more by removing spacers under the anvil. I can also adjust the amplitude of the swing by about the same amount. Today, I temporarily atta…

Does anyone know how the valving works and which part regulates the ability to control light hits and feather to heavier hits? I am having a tough time getting control on mine. It will hit light, then too hard then too light with lots of movement on the treadle. Any one familiar with these machines? I love this machine but it ends up just sitting due to this problem other than texturing material. R

Hi All so a out a year ago I got in touch with a seller through fleabay who was selling a triple burner gas forge. On the off chance I asked if he had any other equipment and he told me he had this power hmer he was going to list but hadn't quite got round to putting online. Anyway after some negotiation we agreed a price and he delivered it from France. He was visiting family in my own city so decided he could bring it back with him. Awesome. This was his creation that took him many hours and redesigns and had been using well for the past ten years he was only selling because his wife agreed if he could sell it he could get a real power house of a power hammer. …

If you were to build your own hammer, which mechanism or style of hammer would you choose to build? Which type mechanism lends itself better to damascus/knife making? I've seen everything from air hammers (like the anyang 33lb), even home made ones made with an air cylinder powered by a compressor to slam the hammer down (it was quite compact and powerful), to what I assume is called a "tire" hammer with tire spinning an offset cam connected to the hammer via connecting rods with a spring of some sort between them, to longitudenally mounted leaf springs that rock front to rear. I'm sure there are other mechanisms I'm not even familiar with. Which type do you t…

So I’m the very proud new owner of this amazing 1piece Nazel 3B. Took me many years to find the right hammer to compliment my 1B to do the big work at the forge. I do wonder how many of the 1 piece hammers are out there, I only know of a handful of 1 pc 3B’s.

  9. I’m considering a 75kg Anyang power hammer for my shop. I know there are so many threads on here which talk about foundations and isolation pads, but there are so many variables, it seems impossible to have a one fits all solution. The Anyang is a one piece unit, which I would think is a bit more forgiving than having a seperate anvil, but then I’m not sure! We are very rural, but I have one neighbouring property, which is only about 50 meters away from the workshop. The couple who live there are not very forgiving about noise. Any noise. Last week whilst I was working in the shop, the guy shouted over and asked me if I could turn the radio down, as the…

  10. I am restoring a 100# Fairbanks-Dupont Power Hammer that went through a fire and then sat out for a year.. I have been able to remove the ram and toggle arms with a minimum of trouble and have them moving freely. The problem is the drive shaft. The brake is released and not touching the drive pulley. I have been spraying regularly with PB Blaster and squirting it into the oiler holes. One problem is the oil holes are on the side of the shafts so I am not sure that oil has migrated all the way around the shaft. I then wrapped a sling around the drive pulley and lifted it with my hoist. The pull is in the direction of rotation and thought it might free the shaft but the ma…

  11. Hello I'm planning to build a guided helve hammer with preclutch flywheel, similar to arftist's: My goal is 50lb tup, 220bpm. I want it to be stout, efficient and minimize transmitted vibration/noise. Cost is important, but not paramount(I'll be buying new parts as needed rather than scrounging forever). In case of a later increase in head weight, I don't mind overdesigning some parts. I'm trying to get an idea of how beefy the mast and drive systems' bearings/shafts need to be for 50lb tup and how that would change for say a 100lb tup. Here's the 50lb design parameters. Feedback appreciated! Pivot: 2 inch diamter shaft and pillow block bearings. Push …

Hello again to all. My latest project is a tyre hammer and so far, I think my build is coming on quite well but again, I'm not to sure about something. So my first question is this:- is it down to personal preference for how much vertical travel the hammer has or are there any kind of parameters to go by? My hammer is around 45lb and I was thinking around 6 inches. Any advice? Second question:- I was going to set my hammer up so that it's just touchin the anvil when it's at it's lowest point in a stationary position therefore, the flex on the spring when it's in motion will give the hammer it's power.I was going to put some shims under the anvil so I have…

  15. I recently have been able to snatch this Kerrihard from a very awesome guy. This is kind of blowing my mind because everything (except for the body) is forged. All the arms and pivots (I dont know what they are really called) at least seem to be forged from what I can see. From what I have seen online is that the parts are cast on all Kerrihards (30# model). I have a hunch that this may be a prototype but this is my first power hammer and I have no idea. Any help or insight on Kerrihard would be awesome or if you know why this thing has forged parts, even better. Thanks!

  16. I bought my first power hammer and it is a Champion Blower and Forge power hammer no 1. I have seen all the posts from 2009 and some a little newer. I am wanting to know if anyone has any newer videos of the machine running and also information to renew the power hammer it's self. I will add pictures today to this thread but they are from the gentlemen that sold it to me. He is a gun maker and bought the hammer 30 years ago and never got into blacksmithing so it has not been running, just sitting in his garage waiting for me to come rescue it lol.

I am searching for any information on my power hammer. The Shatto & Son hammer doesn't appear in any book or literature . I searched Lorimor Iowa and can't fine any information either. The 1-1/2HP motor is mounted on a clamped assembly around the upright bearing posts. The motor hangs down to make the belt wrap almost 180 degrees to get enough traction for the belt to drive the hammer. The hammer operation is ultra simple. To the left of the big bully wheel, there is a Bearing Cap that also holds a lever pivot. When the hammer is activated, the Floor Rod w\thru linkage presses the large bully wheel into the thin iron wheel to the right of the pull wheel. The thin iron…

  19. Hi everyone, I'm trying to find someone who can help with my 50# little giant. I bought it about a year ago, and Ive poured time and money into the machine and cant get it to run just right. I believe that the problem is a misalignment on the frame where the ram sits. In theory I know that I should be able to get the frame so that it it is perpendicular to the sow block and both faces parallel to each other, so ive ground the surfaces so that to me they are good or at least pretty close, but either I cant make that happen or there is another issue that I cant figure out. I would really like to find someone that knows these machines very well to come and help me get …

This was Larry's 4b that had trouble half stroking without a blow off valve. I plan to have Mark Krause fix it one of these years. I initially had more immediate plans for this, but life changes. Right now it will be stored and tweaked in my family shop until i pour a foundation for it at mine. In the mean time, its hard to not appreciate such an imposing figure. Also it is crazy to think that in 2012, i joined this site and this world, and 5 years later i own a Nazel.

  21. About 2 years ago I created a new type of inline hammer. http://www.iforgeiro...t-line-linkage/ As much as I like the hammer I always wanted to come up with a different design that contained less parts. Below is a video of the general concept. The hammer will need to be driven by either a cable or a chain. Currently I'm exploring the chain and sprocket option as shown in the model. It will certainly move quite differently than other hammers. The sprocket will have to rotate 180° to give full stroke. That 180° is the equivalent of about 17" of travel which is a little too much for treadle travel. I'll have to build a little mechanical advantage into the treadle connection …

Scrap pile build. It's a little hammer but the drop the tongs method of doing things gets old. Problem is in the hammer arm, it's got a little wobble due to the fact that I used a hinge for the pivot point... like I said though, it's what I had laying around... Any ideas for getting the wobble out without changing the design? VID_trim_ifi_post_vid.mp3

  23. After a day of playing with my new Runfa (seems identical to Anyang) power hammer, I am learning, but still somewhat confused. I have read the countless threads on this site, and they are absolutely awesome, but I cannot for the life of me figure out a couple of issues. Here is the Hammer: Issue #1: I adjusted the oil feed rate in the two glass bubbles to 5-8 seconds per drip. (I've attached a picture of the Oiler for reference.) In order to achieve this slow a flow rate, I had to screw the black screws in tight and just back them off 1/4 turn. Does this seem right? gambit x men origins movie Issue #2: I original…

  24. Ok so I bought a Beaudry #9 power hammer back in November and am finally able to set it up. The flat belt system is confusing me and I am having a hard time finding literature or reference on how this stuff is supposed to be set up. I have a jack shaft driven by a 10hp motor. Unfortunately the drive wheel is about half the size of the flywheel on the hammer. I wish I could find a larger one. As of right now I am testing with an old worn out canvas belt that I got with the hammer. My main problem is around belt length and tension. The belt is supposed to spin with the jack shaft around the flywheel on the hammer until you engage the clutch pulley. The only way …

Found this guy about 5min. From my shop. It was used 15 years ago and has been owned by the same owner for decades. Belonged to the RR to ReSharpen chisels, until the late 50's. The owner is offering my some extra things, including a tire shrinker for wagon tires! It is on its side right now, but the machine shop it is in has a 10 ton gantry crane to pick it up and load it on a trailer with. Not sure what to do. Can't really afford it outright atm, but I do have credit! For the price it just seems too good to pass up. I have a seperate shop from my main shop I can run it in. Little iffy over motor size but he says he used to use it. Corner was broken off long ago, and the…
