Buzzkill
I'm just about done with my junkyard tire hammer. I've used oil infused ultra high molecular weight plastic as liners in the ram guide. Is it advisable to use it that way without any additional lubrication, or is it common practice to use some lightweight oil there as well? arftist
I would use oil to prolong the lifespan of your bearing material.
Buzzkill
Thanks for replying. I was/am a little concerned about the effect of petroleum based lubricants on the UHMW plastics though. Before starting it up I've just used a squirt (on each side of the ram) of silicone based spray lubricant (produced by the makers of WD-40). That seems to have helped a bit with the amount of heat produced by friction, which probably also means there's less wear on the materials. I haven't used it enough yet to make many confident claims though.
Frosty
Is there a plastics shop local you can call and ask? My concern with oiling slide bearings is for dust in the environment, dust sticks to oil. Frosty The Lucky.
