power hammer build help please

Recommended Posts

hi folks  big hello to the forum

so I am the process of resurch how to build a air power hammer. I am pretty confident on the fabrication design but have had no experience of pneumatic s so I"ve been trying to research the valving systems i think I"ve got my head around the principles from looking on YouTube   etc at various diy builds andKinyon style Air Hammer - Tools and Tool Making - Bladesmith's ...i came across this diagram somewhere and had been studying it , the problem is I am not sure exactly about the valve types can anybody point me in the right direction or tell me if these are correct

Pneumatic Valve 5/2 5/3 Way

Shako SK520-04S(D) SK530-04D

  • 5/2 way single or double acting and 5/3 way.
  • Port size 1/2" BSP or NPT thread.
  • Pressure external air pilot 1.5 to 7 bar, operating pressure range 0 to 8 bar, 10 bar maximum.
  • Suitable for flammable working environments.
  • This air pilot valve is actuated by air for accurate response.
  • Temperature range -10C to +80C.
  • 2 to 10 station manifold available.

Mechanical valve 5/2 Way

Shako MSV40152-01

  • 5/2 way mechanical air valve
  • Port 1/8" BSP, NPT or Rc thread.
  • Pressure range 0 to 9 bar, 10 bar maximum, air pilot pressure 3.5 to 7 bar.
  • Various operators, toggle lever, roller, push button, one way roller, ball plunger, air pilot or finger button.
  • Panel bore size φ12.
  • Temperature range ambient -10C to +60C.

and this one but in 1/4 inch  all help would but gratefully received

cheers tom

Welcome aboard Tom, glad to have you. If you put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many members live within visiting distance.

Research into building something as inherently dangerous as a power hammer on Youtube is researching ways to win a Darwin Award. Have you researched enough to know there are a number of PROVEN plans available for sale?

The money you'll spend on components trying to reinvent a machine in common use will far exceed the cost of plans. Not to mention potential hospital bills if things really go south on you.

hi no never used one, I have bought some plans of a guy in the uk, however I am building this on a tight budget and the design of the hammer is being built around the materials that I have at home so the cutting list that I purchased wont really work so my design has been evolving around that design and other diy build that I have come across on the web and the valve set up was really just single hitting like a treadle hammer and I would like it to be a constant hitting hammer cheers tom

It seems rather a common thing that people who have not used powerhammers and then go design one; end up with a powered treadle hammer rather than one that does a couple of hundred beats per minute.

A  corollary is that people who are not smiths that go and try to build an anvil get things that look like London Pattern anvils but don't work like a real one as they don't know what's important and what's superficial.

  • 4 weeks later...

I"ll keep that in mind LOL !! so the plans for the hammers arrived the other day and I've been trying to source the pneumatic parts for it I am struggling with the main valve which is a norgren nugget 500 which i think is a usa specific model is there anyone out there that knows if there is a European valve that would work or i have found one on ebay but its solenoid actuated instead of pilot/spring does anyone know whether this would work with a 24 volt trip switch instead or the pneumatic switch

all advice greatly welcomed

thanks tom

Is there a retail store that deals with pneumatics within driving distance? They should have equivalent parts books, if not they'll know who does or where to look.

Face to face or at least on the phone is almost always more productive doing this kind of search.
