Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels

  1. How much is my 80lb Columbian Anvil worth? I live in SW Okla and am curious what I've got here. My research tells me this is an old Colombian and my scale tells me it's 80lbs or 36.2 kg. I'll attach pics. Any help appreciated.

Enthusiasts, how far would you all travel to pick up a nice unit? So often things pop up and at a very fair price, but the distance is too much for me. I suppose if one is anvil-less then on would be more prone to make the excursion. Here is a classic example of one that makes my heart go piter-pat. Over 200kg and clean edges for $500ish, Oh my... But a 10 hour round trip doesn't sound like fun and I sure as sheets don't need another anvil. I had trouble getting my 107kg in the truck, this would be a bear.

  3. Found this Anvil on an auction site (Gov Deals). Looks like it is in good condition, but it is close so I can bring a bearing and test it. Can't quite identify it by markings, hoping an expert here can help. Current bid is $337, so regardless of maker, it's a pretty good deal. 4" W x 27" L x 11" T Thanks, Matt

  4. There’s this 150lb that someone’s selling not to far from me farly worn stump included for 200$ with one big catch IT DOESNT HAVE A HORN. I’m very curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on this if it’s or good deel or not and how important really is a horn? My last cheap harbor freight anvil didn’t really have a horn either so I don’t have much experience with horns. Thank you for your input!

Picked this up from a garage sale for 40$. Weighs about 60# with the horn missing, rebound is great. I have searched and searched for the makers mark online but have not found anything besides "Pirkenhammer" which made fancy porcelain dishes from 1960s +. If anyone has any info about the maker and/or approximate age I would be excited to learn more about it!

In my search for an anvil, after trying Craig's List and a look at ebay, I tried the ask around method and and got lucky while visiting my in laws in TN. Figuring that they live in a rural farming community I might just get lucky. It worked. I asked my father in law if he could keep an ear out for anyone in the area that might have an anvil they didn't need anymore. His response was pretty quick, he said he had one in the barn. Long story short, being as I was looking and he had one just gathering dust, I scored a new to me anvil. When I got it home and cleaned it up, I started to do some research and found out it was a Vulcan #8. Now realizing it's not in …

I found some faint markings on my coach maker’s anvil today after owning it for a few years I can faintly make out 3 0 18 making it 354lbs by me reckoning which is roughly what it seems to weigh, these are the only markings I can see on the thing I’d love to know more about who made it and when if anybody can shed some light on it

  9. Howdy all, I need some help with this anvil. I bought it today and did EXTENSIVE online research, and the only references I could find to it were on this forum (which were vague). I'm looking for any history/insight that any of you might have into the how old this anvil is, who made it, and any other bits of knowledge you might have. On the anvil itself, the words (barely readable) are as follows Lewis Warranted Best Tiedin (Is this a last name? Am I misreading this? NO results on google for tiedin. Doesn't even sound like a legit word to me) Thanks

Hello, i just bought my first anvil, it have beautiful rebound, but very deep scratches on surface, what do you guys think, should i'll try to grind it or leave it this way? I will using it for bladesmithing and historical replicas (fire strikers, small axes, chest hinges etc.). Also can anyone tell me something about this anvil? I find online, that these shapes of anvil are south german or austrian origin and can be even from XIX century?

  11. I finally took the plunge and bought my first anvil. It's a 200lb Fisher-Norris "Eagle". The auctioneer called it a "city" anvil because due to the manufacturing process it doesn't have the telltale high pitched ring. At least that's what he said. I think I may have gotten caught up in the bidding and overpaid a bit for this, but it's really what I was looking for, so I'm telling myself it's OK. I know it's worth is in the eye of the beholder, so I'm not asking if I got a good deal or a bad deal, I'm asking if you would pay $800 for this anvil? Do we have any Fisher experts in our midst? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi all. I’m new to the forum. I’ve bought an old British anvil for £50 (bargain) which appears to have no markings but fully intend on taking the wire wheel to it to find out. It measures 13.25 inches high by 32 inches long by 5 inches wide. The face is slightly pitted as shown in the photos. My initial question is: does anybody recognise the shape and dimensions, is it cast or forged from what you can see, and do you have any ideas as to its weight? Thanks. Tom

Saw these at a local auction. Are they legitimate working anvils with swage block sides or some concocted decor pieces?

  15. Started by Khy,

Greetings, I recently picked up this anvil on a chance, at first it appeared to have zero markings, but a bit of cleaning showed a few so far. 3 layers of paint had them 100% hidden, so there may well be more. Didn't help that the lowest layer was "aged steel" in color. To complicate things further, when using the word "worth" in a search with "anvil", the results were obviously more focused on "anvil value". Rings like a bell, decent rebound, but the face seems rather soft. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone. I have just discovered your website and this is my first post. I have an anvil that I hope someone can help me confirm it's identity and possibly obtain information on it's age. I have uploaded various photos for reference. The anvil appears to be a Peter Wright. The markings are very faint and dinged but I can just make out the letters 'IGHT' on the side. Other markings include the relatively clear weight marks (2, 2, 17) and also very, very faint traces of the letters 'Solid Wrought' I believe, set around the central '2' marking. It is a lovely anvil to use and I suppose it is unusual in that it is a double bick form. It has two …

Hello, glad to be on this knowledgeable forum. I'm more of a novice machinist with some minor heat treating experience (in plain carbon steels). I've made a 1095 stock-removal knife and plan on another soon using some 1.3% plain carbon steel, but I also found some 6150 steel for cheap and have been attempting to forge it for a few days now. I have been using my heat treat oven as a forge, and a 75 lbs block of stainless steel stock as an anvil. I was getting tired of the bounce from that, and how much it would move side to side. Having planned to pick up forging at some point, I decided I may as well see if any anvils are in my area. I was out looking today and …

Hello from Northern Michigan! I have a 127# Peter Wright anvil, and I am hoping someone could help age it for me. I think it was an 1830-1852 Era. This anvil was salvaged fron EJIW, East Jordan, MI many years ago. Any other info or great links would also be welcomed! Thank you! Apologies for extra pictures

  21. Started by Omars Forge,

From reading other posts and knowledge sharing, I think this is a (beat up) Vulcan anvil. Your thoughts on that? Also, the "20" on the front foot area would indicate 200 lbs, yes? I got this years ago; I built a stand for it and have some misc tools but really can't use it (injured shoulder). Do you think it's worth anything, or just scrap given it's condition? I appreciate any advice, of course; nice to have some experienced eyes and minds to ask questions of.

New to this forum. Been lurking a little and every time I do a search on something having to do with anvils, this site comes up so figured this is the place to be. Anyway, just bought this Fisher anvil from a guy who got it from his dad about 20 years ago but has no other info on it. There is no info on the bottom and the only markings I see are the Fisher name and the Eagle brand. Had to wire wheel it quite a bit just to get this info. My best guess is the weight being about 70-75 LBS. As you can see, the face is in fairly good shape with the horn having a few indentations. I did some research but could not come up with a date so I figured someone here may know what to …
