Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels

  1. Started by Dan Coate,

I recently acquired this anvil. I can’t find any info on it. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks!

  2. Started by David Kahn,

I have a new, cast steel 240 lb anvil that is pretty strongly magnetic. Tools and such stick to the anvil face. Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there an easy way to demagnetize an anvil?

  3. Started by Buckwheat,

Ok, So I picked up this anvil that was advertised as a Peter Wright. I don't think it is but hoping somebody may have an idea of if that is correct or hat it truly is. I took a scour pad to the side to help the markings come out. I can read attorney, 1847, 135,1-0-24. I couldn't find any other numbers or marks anywhere else. Doe anybody have an idea of who the manufacturer is. It rings in the center and seems to have a good rebound. Let me know what you think. Thanks

  4. How old do you guys think this anvil is? What manufacturer?

  6. I wanted to go to a scrap yard, but I don't know what to ask for. They don't always let you rummage around. I don't know enough about car parts to know if something is available that would fit the bill. If not a car, what thick chunk of steel would I search for, as in the name. If I could walk around the junkyard, I could find something, but like I said, some of them don't do that anymore.

I may be in the market for a new anvil in the spring, on a somewhat limited budget. I really like the looks of the DTX anvils, and I’m not far from Blacksmith Supply, so I could save on shipping costs. The thing I’m not crazy about is that they’re cast in China, they also appear to be just like the B&W anvils which are also cast in China. Do any of you here have any personal experience or knowledge of these two anvil brands?

Just brought home an Arm and Hammer 293# anvil. Says Arm and Hammer with logo below, wrought iron below that, and 293 Stamped in below that. Edge under the horn has the number 43458 stamped in it. It also has a metal tag "nailed" to it that says 292. Came with wooden stand with metal pins. Someone drilled a hole in the bottom and added a 1-1/2" pin to the stand to keep it in place. Would love to know when it was made, and who bought it originally.

  9. I came across a 125lb anvil in my fathers garage. I cant seem to identify the manufacturer, with the markings i can see. One the base it has 125then a 133380 number. It also has an H on the base of the horn and either a U or horseshoe stamp underneath the horn. I also have a Hardie tool with it. Just cant figure out the age or manufacture.

Greetings, my fellow metal heads! I aqquired this awesome stake anvil and I could swear I've seen these matings before, just can't remember where..It's a letter "T" and what remains of a 'fleur de lis' on a cross with 3 letters in it. Hopefully there is somebody out there who recognises them. Thank you! Kind regards, Michael.

I'm a small time hobbyist with little shop space so I've been making do with a cheap cast steel 30kg anvil I bought from Mr. Bezos. At last weekend's Swaptoberfest of the NWBA I took home a small Lakeside serial number 188220. It also has "RUHLEN" stamped on the bottom of the foot, anybody know what that means? Or is it just the owner's name? You don't want some shop pilferer walking off with your anvil in their pocket and telling you it's theirs. That "70" appears to mean 70 lbs. Confirmed with our bathroom scale, which also tells me the anvil has 0% body fat. I don't have the AIA, can anyone guess the age? Elsewhere I've seen references to Lakeside s…

  14. G'day forum, please accept my apologies for jumping straight in, but in trying to research my anvil, your site kept coming up, so figured you're the people in the know! Short story - my dad bought this anvil years ago, part of the story as I know it was that it came to Australia as balast in a boat (not uncommon apparently), I don't know which boat or when, I'll lean on my dad some more for this information . . . as well as how he came to owning it! Either way, there downsizing and I'm about to look after the anvil. I love this anvil, it's only ever lived in the garden of the family home and will continue this lifestyle in my garden (sorry to you true hammer swingers)…

I don't know if this has ever been posted on IFI before, so forgive me if it's duplicated. I ran across this youtube video of an absolutely amazing collection of anvils in an old fortress in Italy. I don't know if youtube video links are prohibited, but if so, mods please inform me. A young smith by the name of Will Stelter toured the fortress and took videos of the collection of hundreds of anvils, some weighing over 1000 to 1700#...eye candy for the folks with anvil obsession.

Hey everyone. I’m new to blacksmithing and have been using a railroad track anvil so far (one section vertical in concrete, and a section I lay flat for a larger work area) this has been working but I would like to upgrade. I have been looking online at new anvils in the 100-135 lbs range. It seems like $700-$1000 is about what a quality anvil of that size cost new today. I have considered buying a cheap cast anvil to learn with but I don’t like buying things twice and I’m not sure how much better it would be than my railroad track. I just found this Trenton anvil for sale near me. Based on some quick research I think it is a farrier’s clip horn …

Hi all, Just got this anvil and hoping someone can help me figure out who made it. Length is 18 1/2 inches. Height 8 5/8 inches. Base is 7 1/2 inches across the front. Hardy hole is 3/4 inches square. Weight is 68 pounds. No markings that I have found except the logo on the front which is shown as best I can get it in picture Anvil6. Thanks for any info. Dave

Hi everyone, I picked up a BK Sydney 392 anvil the other day and just wanted your opinion on condition and areas you would consider repairing. It’s not too bad, bit of misuse markings (looks like it was damaged with an oxy torch) and the face is dead flat but has a nasty little hole next to the hardy hole. There are also all these little gouges all over it, I’m not sure what they are from. Thanks in advance, Dennis. NSW Australia.

This anvil i bought from a friend came from Germany, near Wiesbaden. It had about seven diferent color coats of paint on it with the last being yellow. It looks like a date is stamped on it 1887. The second 8 looks to be a top heavy strike on the stamp. Ubove that is some stamping that i can't make out. Does anyone know anything about this anvil? Is the date correct? It mesures 33in long, 15in high and 6in wide.

A cool little snippet showing a pair of B&W Anvils being hardened in the factory. Interesting to see how the quenchant is blasted down the length of the tank, rather like one of those endless swimming pools. https://fb.watch/lNvg2c2zS7/?mibextid=DcJ9fc (Apologies for this being a Facebook video; I tried to find some other format, but without success. If anyone runs across a YouTube version or the like, please post a link in a comment.)

Some thirty years ago I answered an ad in the local classifieds for some metalworking tools and such. The seller was a real estate guy and had the task of cleaning out an old shop in Salem Massachusetts. The ad did not mention an anvil but there it was, with a 1" thick piece of steel welded on edge to the face. I went home with a bunch of stuff including a Marvel No2 draw cut saw (which has since self destructed), pry bars and various other had tools and the anvil for $200. I knew that the anvil was never going to be the best with hunk of steel welded to it but the price was right. I got it home and cut the piece of plate off with a grinder and then carefully dress…

This is upgrading a basic 60lb vulcan. It is ~103lbs, in very good condition for its age. Very flat top, horn is still in great shape too. According to my research it is a pre-1830 Mouse Hole Forge. The hardy hole is 3/4", so he threw in some of the nonstandard hardy tools he made...a cutter and a spring fuller.
