The member who hosted this month's Free State Blacksmiths Club helped us make hammers. I decided to make a straight pein dishing or leafing hammer. I just need to get it handled. This should come in handy for any future faces I take on as well as for when I get back to working on beveled scrolls! -

Gewoon, I like how you chose to orient the square body of the handle so that the edge faced up. -

Yes, we discussed that. She's worried even tempered glass will get damaged in the first storm that brings hail. She thinks she'll just find a table covering and hopefully that will keep it nice longer. -

I took advantage of my forced downtime and finally got a design worked up for the tabletop I'm fabricating for my mother in law. 12ft by 4ft. The lighter shaded H-shape in the background is the support brace. (4" x 1/4" flat bar). The top and bottom of the brace attach to the existing wood supports with long lag bolts. I'm welding another flat bar horizontally at the center point to give additional connection points midway down. The table frame is actually two pieces. That center horizontal line is where they meet, and will be 1" tube so the combined is the same dimensions as the outer frame of 2". The frame will be attached to the support brace using threaded inserts and bolts from the underside. I can always add a brace that connects the center to the lower wooden beam if more structure is needed. But I don't think it will be needed. All the inside design will be flat bar. Probably going to make it hard on myself and bend the swoops the hard way so I have a wider surface area visible from the top. Thinking 1" x 1/4" flat bar. The rings would be bent the easy way. Oh, and I'll add tabs on the inside for the plexiglass to sit into. So the plexiglass would be flush with the top of the square tube frame. -

Chad, I'm gonna have to add the triangle twist to my candy cane notes. I feel like if I twisted it tighter than you have here, it might just work... -

Billyo, I like that hook style - very clean lines. You definitely have a knack for the upset corners. Chad, I think that hanger turned out nice. I've had to do the same with tacking short tenons before. Another tip I frequently forget with tenons is to make the hole square so that the tenon upsets into a square hole and fastens more securely. George - unknown crud. Chest congestion, VERY sore throat, overall achiness and fatigue. No fever, no discoloration of mucus (so far). I am indeed enjoying the view out my window. I have been isolated to the bedroom until this passes and the bedroom windows overlook the wooded area where the deer pass through and the birds congregate. Pretty boring in the evening though, lol -

I can see how that would ruin it. Funny story on the driveway plowing. The guy Ashley hired showed up in a F150 with no blade on the front. I'm like, surely he's not going to shovel! That's going to take hours! Turns out, yes, he was going to shovel. But his truck got stuck at the entry of our drive and he left after he dug himself out. For reference, the snow was above midway on his tires. She called someone else and confirmed they had a plow, lol. They also struggled to get through the entryway but did eventually get there. Our drive was cleared around noon and Ashley went out and got me some Mucinex, OJ, and bone broth. I'm hoping to get some better sleep tonight. From what I'm hearing from others who had this, it might be a week or two before I'm back out forging :/ -

Chad, that's a nice upset corner! Billy, we also got hit with the big snowfall and my wife also refused to shovel. Unfortunately, I'm sick so I'm not shoveling either. Fortunately though, Ashley is paying someone to plow in the morning (with her play money) so she can get out and go to work. We both worked from home today. I will continue to work from home while sick. I'm honestly super bummed that I don't get to play in the snow! Sounds like we might get more on Thursday though so hopefully this crud has gone away by then. -
I'll have to try that out as I have a HUGE bag of it in the garage.

Thanks Frosty! I do have a drill press. The table is really a pain to adjust so I just stack blocks to raise my item as needed. So I can totally make that tool! I'm sure someone has told me how to do that before because it sounds real familiar but I didn't remember when the time came, lol As for the drifted ring, I know it doesn't need to be thick to work but I think it just looks better. What I'm not happy with is the unevenness of this one. You can't really see in this pic, but one side got thin and when I noticed it was too late to do anything about it. I had been cooling that side while drifting to try to get it more even. Then when I was rounding it up on the horn, I forgot to quench that side and just ... wham. I considered thinning the rest to make it all the same but it was thin enough I was worried it would crack on me. It'll still do the job so I'll probably keep it for me, lol ... or maybe not. Would be nice to use a tool that made me proud to have made it. -

This is what I did on the first day of 2025. I decided to make another adjustable punch holder tool to take as my trade item to the January FSBC meeting. Usually the 2nd of a thing is better... I might bring my original as the trade item instead, lol We'll see if I have time to try another that's better. If I do it again, I'll do a fold-over weld instead of upsetting to gain mass on the hole punched end. The first one I did was from 1/2" square and one of the struggles I had was getting the threaded portion to a specific diameter. I was at least thinking enough that I threaded the shaft before the wingnut. Figured whatever size I ended up having on the shaft is what I'd match to the wingnut. Anyway, this time around I figured I'd start with round stock the diameter of the shaft and just beef up the one end that has the drifted hole. I haven't even threaded any of it yet. I just really don't like the look of that drifted hole nor am I proud of those wingnut scrolls. -

Billy, I really like that rope/water twist combo! John, not bad at all for something "bodged together". I haven't been able to get out to do any forging since my last post and I'm getting itchy, lol -

Well I'll be making another of these for the January meeting trade item so thank you everyone for the tips. I'll be putting them to use!
