Greetings I have a Hay -BUDDEN ANVIL STAMPED 101 AT THE BOTTOM WHICH I ASSUME MEANS IT IS A 101 LB ANVIL AND 7478 STAMPED ON THE BASE UNDER THE HORN WHICH I UNDERSTAND IS THE SERIAL NUMBER. Is there any way to verify the date of this anvil without purchasing the American Anvil Book. I am looking to possibly sell or trade but a definite year of manf. would be very helpful. Thank You

Greetings, Recently I was cleaning out my garage and found and Hay-budden anvil stowed away in a Cubby hole between the wall studs. From more research found out this anvil was my grandfathers that my mom inherited after his death and now it is mine, Mom passed away also. My grandfather was an iron worker in the Bay Area (calif) over 65 years ago , and I have no idea about anvils and I seeking more information on a Hay-Budden anvil. On the front it has Hay-budden , Brooklyn new york stamped on it and lower it has the number that looks like 701 but probably are 101 and on lower left side there are numbers 7478 stamped . I want to purchase a "budget" (read Chinese) anvil. Contacting the manufacturer I was told I could get an alloy steel or a high carbon steel. Both have the surface hardened to 55 HRC. Which steel would be best and what percentage would be considered HIGH carbon content? Thanks, Dark Horse

I'm new, so new I don't even have an anvil yet. There are 2 in my price range that I'm considering, a Vevor 110# and an Acciaio 132#. But here's the deal, the 132# costs an extra $100+ for 22 pounds, is it worth it? I don't plan for this to be my livelihood, what will I notice for my extra 22 pounds and $100? Thanks!

Hey Guys, it's been a VERY long time since I've posted. Many things have changed in life. I'm looking to get back into smithing and looking for an anvil. I'd like to go with a brand new one if possible and looking for suggestions. In the past I had looked at Fontanini anvils but I'm seeing now that doesn't look like an option anymore. Then I found Hollands and found they also closed. Anyone have any recommendations for something 250-450lbs? Let me know, Thanks, Adam

I have had a small fisher "0" front mark anvil that has been in the family for many years and wondering the value? Anyone interested in these?

So I just today cleaned up a bit an anvil in pretty good shape, my father gave me 40 yrs ago. It says 'Henry Wright, England, Warranted'..then some numbers and the bottom number is 101. I had never looked for nor seen these markings before Anyone have an idea as to rarity, age, value? Many thanks, Mike

This is about 20 minutes down the road in an antique shop. It’s a little PFP, probably 70 to 80 lbs. I argued the seller down to 250. Bad idea? The horn is slightly pitted and tip is marred, but otherwise, the edges are fine and rebound wasn’t bad.

I have an arm and hammer anvil that weighs approx 260 pounds. The serial numbers are 17610. I believe it is from 1913. Can this be confirmed and what is it worth?

The person I’m buying this from said it belonged to someone else who added the divot near the hardy hole. it’s about 250 to 300 pounds. Sides are pretty messed up so I can’t see any logos. Any information would be helpful

DIY anvil from recovered ah H beam construction tips Hi, a metalworker friend of mine kindly gave me a 160mm He steel beam stump. I thought I'd salvage this scrap and make a rudimentary makeshift anvil. How do you recommend I make it? If I wanted, I could weld some flat iron scraps on top to weigh it down and make it bigger and thicker, as you would do so that it's functional and useful. If possible, I'd like to hit it with an 8kg mallet. Thanks, regards.
