  1. Sometimes you feel like a prize idiot. Had to make a brand today. Checked all the correct dimensions - letters 50mm high, less than 25mm between letters etc. Formed the curves in the forge and welded the whole thing up. Checked the letters for flush contact and welded on a neat handle. All good. Then I went to check the original order. The customer had specified RWJ with a long tail on the R. You can see what's wrong. It pays to check twice, weld once. The brand is pictured below. Now I have to start again. DUH!!!
  2. Howdy all, I need some help with this anvil. I bought it today and did EXTENSIVE online research, and the only references I could find to it were on this forum (which were vague). I'm looking for any history/insight that any of you might have into the how old this anvil is, who made it, and any other bits of knowledge you might have. On the anvil itself, the words (barely readable) are as follows Lewis Warranted Best Tiedin (Is this a last name? Am I misreading this? NO results on google for tiedin. Doesn't even sound like a legit word to me) Thanks
  3. Hey guys, today I got a new anvil that I bought from a colleg of my father for just 25$. It was covered by thick painting but I removed it and was able to reveal some signs. I also made a video about the sound and the rebound. Perhaps one of you can indentify this anvil and say me what steel/iron it is made of and how much it actually is worth. Here it becomes interesting! I think that the top letters say "1824" -> if that is the production year this is almost antique o_o. And the middle ones seem to say 44 1/2... in kilogramms this would fit pretty good. And there is also a touch mark that looks like a square with two hashes on top. Here I marked the letters that I think I was able to recognize with Photoshop: I was actually impressed by the good rebound! You can also hear the sound (although it got a little scratchy from the microphone in real it is pretty clear!) Ok I would be glad if you can tell me something about this anvil. For me it is a nice little anvil I may take with me to demonstrations or other events that need a portable anvil. Yours - Daniel you may get more answers if you asked in the anvil section, I will relocate for you
  4. Hi all. I want to identify my anvil I live in New Zealand but my anvil came from Birmingham England (told by the original owner before me) i have wire buffed and found only one mark in the middle of the front foot I will attach photos. Thanks for all the help in advance.
  5. Hello all new to this site. I'm a beginner hobbiest metal banger (don't wanna call myself even a wanna be smith yet haha). Right now I'm banging on a RR tracks and I, like everyone else, am looking for an anvil. I ran across someone that has one and it looks cheap but not sure. He said he would sell it to me for $50 and the only identifying mark on it is an extruded extruded "NO. 50". I'M ASSUMING IT'S CAST BECAUSE THE LETTERS AND NUMBERS ARE IN FACT RAISED CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INSIGHT ON WHAT THEY THINK THIS IS? And if it's worth $50 thanks all
  6. Hi all, new on I Forge Iron, recently my father and I got into blacksmithing, and we needed an anvil. All we had was a square block of iron. No horn or anything.. well anyways we picked one up off craigslist today and its in decent shape, minus the base. It looks like it was cut or broken at the waist, and a rod was welded to it, and drilled down into the stump its sitting on. The guy made a wood block to fit around the bottom. Anyways, the things has gotta be near 200#. It took us both to move it in and out of my truck with difficulty. Theres no name or weight on it, and its about overall 28½ inches long, 5¾ wide, the horn and table is about 10¼ long. Hardie hole 1¼ wide. Any ideas what is is, age, etc? Thanks. Any help or ideas that point me in the right direction for research would be greatly appreciated. Here's some photos...
