Jacksman
Saw these at a local auction. Are they legitimate working anvils with swage block sides or some concocted decor pieces?
Frosty
I've never seen one but that doesn't mean much. Do a rebound test and see if the face is hard and they should do okay. If they're decent rebound wise I'd maybe offer them 2-3x scrap for one. The issue I have is "Any tool meant to do everything, does Nothing well." Frosty The Lucky. George N. M.
I think that they would be less useful than a separate swage block because you would be hitting into the depressions horisontally rather than vertically. That's not very ergonomic. They do appear fairly small (30#?), so it might not be hard to turn them on their sides. Centaur forge carries a line of anvils that has semi-circular and 90 degree shapes around the edge of the base and I have the same issue with those, difficulty in use. I'm going to bet that these little guys are cast iron and have poor rebound. I'd pass. I have no idea what the aluminum gadget between the anvils is. I would bid on the wrenches since they are old and unplated. Good material to make bottle openers for motor heads. "By hammer and hand all arts do stand." jkmas
Nice matching pair would make cool book ends at the very least.
ShoreB
The anvil on the left seems to have the remains of a logo; right where the upper swage indent is located.
caotropheus
I did not check these anvils/swages by myself but it looks like they were made from thick plate cutoffs, probably mild steel. If they were cheap enough, yes I would buy them (leave them if they are cast iron).
Daswulf
They look purpose made to me. At a guess the look like they were made to fit maybe a type of power hammer. Doesnt look like the depressionswere made to be swages. Just what they look like to me. From what i see they look quality so I would check for ring and rebound for the final analysis on if they are good or not. Glenn always said, You bought the whole anvil, use it hoe you need it. Paraphrased of course. The shapes on them could be handy.
