How good are the new anvils? I've been recently looking at the prices of used and the difference to go to new isn't that far off. Heck, there's one dealer on e-bay getting higher than new prices. I doubt i'm going to find the deal of a lifetime soon. So, what is a good anvil to purchase new? Does anyone have one currently. I've personally had access to a Nimba and was extremely impressed. But know nothing of the other brands. I know you can use a drop of steel and have a great ASO, but if you were to go with new, what would you want? The anvil brand legend from the jhm line at centaur forge for example is $500 for a 120# or $4.15 a pound. Nimba same size was $7.…

Hi, I have two anvils that were in barn of a 100 year old farmhouse we renovated in Georgia. I wanted to find out more about their value. The smaller one (~100 lbs) I think is a London anvil pattern and has SOLID WROUGHT in a circle on the side. Right below is USA. The larger anvil (~150?) has on one side a large X with what looks like a W and S on either side and then QU___S(?) and below DU_L_Y(?). On the other side are numbers. They are spaced out. I think they are 6, 3, 23. Anyone have any idea as to who made these or their value? Or anywhere else on them, I should look for further identification. Appreciate any information. Including other sites I can rese…

hey folks, I'm getting some light rust ( no pitting....yet) on my anvil especially lately when it's been so darn humid and rainy. .I've sprayed with wd 40, doesn't work so great, coated with heavy oil, better, works ok..sprayed with turp/beeswax/linseed oil ( this works pretty good), but am looking for better solutions if you know of one..( I know build a bigger and dryer barn ( maybe someday)). Advice much appreciated. thanks.... chain

Hey guys, just wondering if anybody has ever heard of or used an Nimba Anvil? Just wondering how good they are? Here is their web site, they have 3 sizes, 450lb $2275, 260lb $1650, and 120lb $900, they list $ per lb on the site. They sound pretty good, made of 8640 cast steel, not that I have that kind of money but I came across the site and just was currious. Nimba Anvils Home Page welder19

Hey folks, only my second post here; was hoping you might be able to help me out. I have an anvil that I think is no newer than the early '70's, might be quite a bit older though. It is marked: Gardiner MFG CO Oakland, CA GARCO THOR 150 LBS Solid Steel V I think that it is cast, due the raised text on the side. The casting seems to be good quality. It is a traditional London or American style anvil. It did not have a pritchel hole when I got it 15 years ago (I drilled one), and it appears that it may not have come with a hardy hole (and some numb nut perhaps used a torch to put one in, then filed it). I had the face ground down about 1/…

Okay, I am looking for a decent starter anvil. I don't have much money and want something that will work until I can afford a nice anvil. I have heard that harbour freight has a russian steel anvil that, with a few hours of grinding, is usable. The problem is: I can't find any anvils on their site. If I type in anvil into the search it doesn't put up anvils. Does anyone have a link to where I can buy this anvil?

Hey, my new boss called the steel place, and asked for a price qoute on some 4 inch square, sold, 3 foot long, PERFECT for a bladesmithing anvil or regular anvil. The price?!??! A very GREAT DEAL of $175.35. That's about a 150# anvil, with most likely a GREAT presence with all that mass underneath the striking face, for an incredible price. My question is and sort of pertains to the hard facing question posted earlier goes as, do i try to harden the face using: 1) Super Quench, heating the face with a rosebud or my forge, and pouring about 5 or 10 gallons of it over the face. 2)"hard facing" welding rod. 3)a pressure washer or garden hose. Super Quench supposedl…

I lucked out and bought an anvil today for 25 bucks from a guy in town that used to make knives. It's not the best anvil in the world but its much better than the RR track anvil I have been using up till now. I looked the anvil over for a makers mark and date etc. On the side it has what appears to be a date of 1944? I tried to bring up the marks with welders chalk, a light sanding, and finally a blast with glass bead. I cant find any manufacturers name on it anywhere but there are a few digits on it. The anvil had been painted numerous time but the original paint is very tough and stayed on in some spots even after the glass beading. The original color is a drab olive…

Hi all, Just a heads up that the lancaster PA HF has three 110 lb anvils and two to three 55 lb anvils. These are the russian steel anvils. I am not interested in them and I know these are not the best but they are better than a lot of scrap metal some use for anvils. Sean

I've been looking at the Old World Anvils web site and like what I see. I'm wanting to purchase a new anvil and the prices they offer are better than most others. I know the horns are not machined and left as they came from the mold. I would like to hear your opinions on the anvils they offer. Thanks for your replies.

I got this piece from my inlaws in IN. It feels sturdy enough, it's about 3' long though and approx 2 1/2" - 3" wide. I was thinking maybe cutting and shaping the top and sides to create a horn maybe then cutting the rest in parts and welding them together to create a base to anchor down on a wooden stump.. maybe it will work but here's some pictures to show you what I got. Let me know your thoughts.

Well I'm sure everyone has been faced with this problem at some point and time... I'm not picky about what I use, in fact I've even came to a conclusion that using a piece of rail would be fine, but the problem is I don't know where to even start to look for a piece of rail. I'm in northern VA and just don't know how I would get one. If anyone has some ideas please shoot! thanks! -Hoary

I just recieved a new anvil, 100# Hay Budden, date unknown, and it needs some face work. First, it seems to have been laying on its side and has weathered one edge somewhat. Whomever owned it last, tried to repair weld it with the incorrect rod ( signs of severe porosity it the welds)/ wire. I believe it is a drop forged anvil vs. cast due to company manufacture and signs of being forged similar to the one we use at work, which is a forged Kohlswa. My main concern is what rod/ wire to use for repair? I do not think a 7018 rod/ 70s wire will work, will it? Or should I use a nickel/ steel rod with a good preheat? If this is done correctly,I really believe this w…

Hello I'm new to this forum and like what I see. I need some help trying to ID this anvil. A friend picked it up for me at an auction in NM. He thinks it is between 180 and 200#s and does not know the name of the maker. It appears to be in very good condition with few chips or dings. The thing that I find unusual is the mounting holes for the base. I don't remember ever seeing one quite like it. Thanks for your help! Mike

Hello All, I'm new to the site (see my intro here) http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f23/hello-pacific-northwet-2512/ and would like to find out something about my small 40# anvil. I got it for $5 at a garage sale and it works reasonable well in my small garage "shop". I'm later going to acquire my fathers 150# anvil, but this one will have to do for now. This anvil has the name Fisher stamped into it and a date 1895 on it as well. Could it be that old? Here are a couple pictures. Do any of you know what the history would be with this beat up thing?
