Do anvil prices make any 1 else scratch thier heads? I mean lets face it, they are big gobs of steel. I know it is a process to make them but there is zero new technology in them it has all been pretty much done before. I have purchased mig welders, tig & stick welders and a plasma cutter for less or the same as a new 400 lb. anvil. Heck I bought a diesel 4x4 farm tractor for less and I am not sure but I think the tractor might weigh more:rolleyes: so it should have a higher scrap value. I am just venting because when people ask what is my most expensive piece of blacksmithg equipment I have to laugh and tell them pound for pound it is my anvils. I know there are a l…

I have had this anvil for a couple years. It passed thru a scrap yard and was picked up as a freebe. I dont have any recourse books to help I.D it with. Heres some pics. barely any of the lettering is readable. I can make out a Co after an intial word across the top. Another word on the bottom seems to start with a "W"... First off these "square holes" are present on the front and back.. A previous owner had welded on a "baseplate" for attaching to a stand I figure its there so Ill use it.. I cleaned the face a little the other day I just havent taken a belt sander to it yet.

I keep hearing you guys talk about anvils that have a tool steel face plate and cast iron body. Lots of people seem to very happy with them so I wonder why they are not manufactured that way anymore. Also, what are the horns made from? Are they cast iron or part of the same chunk of tool steel as the face? Does anyone have a photo or drawing of the tool steel component without the iron around it? I have a Trenton and think It's made this way. thanks

  7. This anvil did not turn out to be the anvil of my dreams. The anvil of my dreams has been sitting under an oiled canvas for 100 years, waiting to be discovered by me at a country flea market for 20 bucks. I almost passed this one up, but decided in the end to give it a home. The story is it was used at the railroad yards in Huntington W.V. You can tell by the wear, that it was used to do something repetitive. Most of the edge wear is forward of the hardy hole, but Seventy percent of the edge is still good. The horn is in excellent condition. The flat working area is perfectly true and measures 19" X 5" The rebound using a three lb hammer was very nice and as I …

  9. The gentleman that has it for sale told me it was dated, 1903. 355 lbs actual weight. He just had it weighed. Says the top is level and clean. It is on a metal stand. Asking, a little under 2 dollars a lb. How do you access an anvil? Its a two and a half hour drive; what do you think? Thanks in advance for your replies, Fred

Last night at 3am my young bride passed 12 days after our 38th wedding anniversary, from Cancer. She would have been 58 on the 19th of April. Marjorie helped me edit this toast in memory of my grandfather, and great-grandfather, both were smiths. Please feel free to hang it in your shop and use it to honor others of our craft. Toast to a fallen hammer He was heated in the forge of life, shaped by the hammer of Christ on the anvil of God, quenched in tears of sorrow and joy, tempered in the hearts of those who loved him, and has gone to find his place in the gates of Heaven. Three times we ring our anvils in his memory. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the …

I don't have picture of the finished product, but my Dad repaired my Grandpa's anvil. He said markings on it are "SB" "13" I would assume the 13 is the stone weight, 182 lbs. which seems about right. Any information would be helpful. It is old, like 1925 or earlier I would guess. anvil pic.doc

  13. I am wondering if anyone can help me in identifying this anvil I just bought. It is my first real anvil (I also have a chinese aso...ugh). I got it for real cheap because it is in pretty bad shape...BUT the horn is in decent shape and there is enough of a flat surface that I can use it until I get something better. There are NO identifying marks that I can find other than the weight. 0-3-12. (according to the calculater I used, this equals 96lb and my bathroom scale says 90 lb...close enough I guess). I'm including a picture to see if anybody notices anyting about it that suggests a particular company. As far as dating, I read on another site that gave guidlines for …

Hey Guys... I'm just getting started in this forging business and kind of lucked out on 2 anvils about a week or so apart.. My first one is a 250 lb that I traded a custom sheath for. It's a little rough,, but what I got it for I don't think I could have done better.. Cleaned it up with an angle grinder and then a flap wheel.. Has a nice ring to it.. The other anvil is almost exactly the same but weighs only 80lbs.. I picked this one up from a junk collector nearby.. Picked it up for Ummmm,,not kidding $5.00... Also picked up 3 really big shop vises, one on a homemade stands made from truck brake drums.. One is an outside vise, so it's all rusty and stuff, but …

  16. Started by gauge,

Found an ad in a local paper for a 50 to 60 pound anvil. I was reluctant to call the seller because I thought this anvil would be way too small. I drove over and an old farmer took me out back behind his house where he had 2 anvils sitting outside in the weather. They were both about the same size. One had "Arm & Hammer" stamped on the side, and the other was an "M&H Armitage". The A&H looked quite rusty and it appeared that someone welded a flat plate on top of the anvil. I am not sure if this normal or if it was later remanufactured. The surface was very flat and the edges were perfectly square. The M&H had a less flat surface and slightly r…

Right now, the best working surface I have is a 3 inch section of RR track. I have an "Anvil Like Object" that works for rough work. And that is about it. What about a granite block, like what a tombstone would be made from? What kind of things have you used, or are using now?

Got the new 100# TFS anvil today. Nice piece. Surface is hard and lively but it does not ring appreciabley. Hardy hole is exactly 1" square but tapers a bit. Horn is round and well finished. I think I'm gonna like it.

I know I know...I still haven't posted pictures of my Mousehole, but the wife lost the chip for the digital camera..... Anyway, I wanted to create a base for the anvil to sit on. A buddy of mine works for the electric company and has access to telephone poles that are chemically treated to never decay. Apparently they treat the entire pole and then cut them to the length they need. He gave me a piece they cut off of the bottom of a pole. It was 15" in diameter and about 2 feet long. Perfect - or so I thought. The problem is I have tried, (in vain) to cut it flat and I can't. I used a chain saw to get it pretty straight and then used a planer to try and get it a…

New to the board and blacksmithing - looks like a good place to start. I recently picked up my first anvil from a local farmer and I'm looking for some information on it. From the visible "RENT" on the body, I assume its a "Trenton" anvil. The serial number on the bottom reads "A659". The farmer, who was in his 60's, told me the anvil originally belonged to his grandfather. Not sure of the weight, but it looks in the 150-175lb range. Its well over 200 with the stand it came with. I didnt pay much for it as I just wanted something flat and hard to learn the trade with. Does it need any repair work? Thanks for any help. Morgan

Hey folks I have a anvil that I am trying to find out the age of. The top is 3 1/2" X 13", and on the right side there is a diamond with "trenton" in the middle. Above the diamond is some letters but I can only make out, S........O.." Below that is stamped "USA", and below that is "91". On the bottom of the base under the horn say "T" on the left and "A804" on the right side. If you guys have any ideas of how old this anvil is and the weight I sure would appreciate the info!:D
