I've had this farrier anvil for a number of years. It has some markings on it but they are not clear so I really don't know who made it and if it is a desirable anvil or not. It is around 200lbs, but I have not weighed it. It does havew 188 stamped on the side so it may be 188lbs. I'll try to weigh it some time. Overall length of the anvil is right at 34". I have two photos uploaded that you can look at if you woulld like although these are rather large photos. No shown in the photos, but on opposite side of the anvil is 08 or 03 cast into the metal. Wondering if it could be for 1908 or 1903. The first photo is an overall view of the anvil. The second ph…

I would like to know who made this anvil I have and when, can anyone help? On the right side the image of a horseshoe is struck, inside the shoe appears "trade mark". Above the shoe is the word "american", below the shoe the word "wrought" and below that 114. That is the weight exactly, 114 lbs on a bathroom scale. AMERICAN ...trade ...mark WROUGHT ...114 The upside down horseshoe is around the words "trade mark". Any ideas? Thanks. Dan:) The serial number 2274 is struck into the right front foot.

I am going to be making an anvil out of a piece of RR track in school. I chose to put this post here because I am in school for welding and going to weld it up. I have to make a box for another class in my lab first, but I will get on the anvil in a couple of days. I will try and keep you informed with pictures along the way, but my cell phone just recently died on me. I'll try and use a friend's phone. until I get another.... What I plan to do: use a piece of RR plate for the heel because of the square hole. I will bevel this plate on both sides, weld it to the back of the rail with a E6010 3-bead root pass on both sides. Then, I am going to fill in the grooves w…

Can anyone give me an idea of a fair value would be for A 250 lb (appx) Vulcan anvil run? I know that sometimes value is what I'm willing to pay but I never ran across a Vulcan. It's in fairly good shape but I couldn't seem to find any markings on it anywhere other than the typical logo. I have a 188 lb Wright and this anvil looks to be 50 lbs more. Any info on Vulcans is welcome. The seller wants $550. I don't mind shelling out $ for nice anvils but I thought this may be a little too high. Thanks

I have a 1923 Trenton Anvil, 175 lbs. The anvil is in decent shape and needs a good home. I live just south of Ft Worth Texas. It would be prudent if it were picked up as the weight is greater than most shippers will handle without huge increases in shipping costs. Selling price $400.00. You can PM me with any questions or offers. The Little Giant power hammer and the Trenton anvil have sold.

I bought this anvil a few months ago and can find no clear markings on it. I have brushed off much of the black paint, applied flour and can see nothing. It weighs about 150LB, looks like the plate may have been ground once already. It has handling holes and on one end what looks like a slot to use in holding the anfil down. Anyone got any ideas what I've got.

Hello all. I have about a 200 lb anvil. It looks forged with no casting marks. Don't know if there are markings will look tomorrow. But It has about 3yrs of rust / exposed to the outside. Its not too bad. Clean sides and horn. Will take a picture tomorrow too. But How do I clean it up. I don't use it but got it from my grandfather's death. And you never know Might start pounding metal myself one day. If Anyone could help it would be a great help. And how do I put a Anvil in mothballs?

Recently, while visiting my friend, he shared some photos of an anvil collection he had received.(I knew his "new" anvil looked familiar:p) I had seen some of the anvils previously here cbl4823 - BLACKSMITH ANVIL COLLECTION After discovering that the person he purchased his "new" (ebay) anvil from posted here and that I was a member he requested that I post a note of thanks. Due to the shipping timetable the "leave feedback" option at ebay was no longer available. The anvil he purchased was the #300 Columbian that is listed but no longer has a photo at the above link. So the "FEEDBACK". Anvil was shown and listed with minor repairs to the face. the description…

One statistic that has got a bit overshadowed by the rise in oil prices is the fact that the price of iron ore went up by 97.5% in a day! There could be more rises in the pipeline. This is bound to reflect quite soon in the price of new anvils. So if you are thinking about buying I would advise you to do it! Second hand anvils are sure to follow the trend but probably more slowly.

Hello. I work in landscaping, and at a job today there a was a big rusty chunk of probably mild steel sitting on the garden. It weighs I'm guessing 80 pounds, is a foot and a half on each side and 3 and a half inches thick. If I flip it thin side up, it would probably make a nice anvil. Is weight overall, or mass under the worked piece what matters? Would it be more efficient than a 50 pound Fisher for just moving the metal around? I'll probably ask them about it anyhow. Merry Being, Archie

I have been looking for a 100-lb. anvil to use for demos and to take to meetings of the Houston Area Blacksmith Association. After about a year of fruitless searching, I purchased a new Texas Farrier Supply 100# Blacksmith anvil. My shop anvil is a 170# Old World German Pattern that has served me very well for the past 5 years. I ordered the anvil from a local Farrier Supply who said they bought from Delta Horseshoe. It took only a week to get the anvil to Houston and I paid no shipping charges. The anvil retails for $550 and county taxes added another $32. Not cheap but not that much more than an eBay anvil of questionable heritage for which premiums are usually pa…

Decades of use produces a patina that, once removed, lowers the antique value of an anvil. But this is not the basis of my question. I am talking about the *new* (used) anvil covered with rust. After the heavy rust is removed, what product will protect the anvil (body and face) during periods on not being used or long term storage, and from rusting again?

Check out completed sale #330247394696 ebay. Sure I probably paid too much- I have bought some nifty things from this seller- always a real pleasure and totally reliable. He knows some about smithing as well. What do you guys(generic- I attended a sensitivity session yesterday, believe it or not the presenter, an Afro-American in her 30's did a great job, made it a fun session- got everyone thinking and there were lots of laughs- I only say'believe it or not," because these classes have merit but are rarely enjyoyable- I recommended her to our Chief Judge in our District) so anyways( she's a Chicago gal too, so we had lots to talk about over a couple of Diet Pepsi's- she g…

Ok here it is I think I have looked at and read all of the anvil threads to help me choose a new anvil. Like many others I would like to get a 250> shop anvil but have found that the used ones in this weight range are in rough shape and in most cases cost as much if not more then a new one. Now I am torn between which style to invest in, single horn or double horn. Now this is were all of you come in. What are the pros and cons of each. Last question lets name all of the current anvil makers. ( nimba, mouse hole, TFS ) to name a few. I just don't want to miss any of my options. As always all of you are the best supply of informed information out there:). Thanks again.

Hello, I am looking at a Fisher anvil that's due to come up at auction soon. I am trying to determine a fair value for this monster. I have a few anvils in the 200 pound range and this one would dwarf those. On inspection, I know it's a Fisher from the obvious foot marking but I was not able to see the # marked on the one foot.....but I could feel the #....it was a 4 or a 5. The condition is overall very good but the table is missing a sliver of it's top, almost like someone filleted 1/2 inch off the complete table except about 3" on the hardy hole end. I know this kills the condition but everything else is very good. As is, I know the table issue may kill the valu…

I have just been given a new anvil, well not actually new but you know what I mean. It's a Trenton but it doesn't have a weight on it, not that I can tell any way but I thought maybe someone could answer a couple questions about it. 1- on the side under the name there is some words in a circle about the size of a silver dollar but I can't make out what it says, anyone know? 2- on the front of the foot it has some letters and #'s M296 on the left and A38016 on the right, anyone know about those? All and all it is in really great condition, the face is perfect and the edges are pretty good, the only spot with any real damage is the flat area between the face and hor…

Ok, so I have a 90 kg anvil and a big block of mild steel about 3x10x20 inches... I would guess it's a hair over 100 lbs just from how it feels to pick up. I was wondering if there were a way to really securely attach the anvil to the steel block in such a way that it would functionally help the anvils stability. Granted, forge welding is out of the question. I'd prefer not to try and weld the anvil at all. So... caulk, JB Weld, epoxies... etc. Would this do what I think it would? Would it just make the thing harder to move and not really help its stability much?
