I am new here and I am in the process of learning this "Trade" as a hobby. In starting to find the various tools of the trade, I came across a Anvil at the local scrap yard. I don't know much about anvils but from what I have read on the Net and what I found on the anvil is that it is a 1843 William Foster. It has a H stamped on it but it looks like there was something stamped in front of it. The scales at the scrap yard weighed it at 106lbs. The problem with it is that the face isn't exactly flat, it's got a slight dip in it. No square edges and there is a small piece of the face missing on one side. I have read that you can weld the face up and regrind it flat. Should I…

Hi All, I am in the process of trying to purchase my first anvil. Can anyone help me out with what the differences might be between between the 'economy' ones and 'premium' ones?? Also how much difference does it make?? Thanks Louise :)

Ok, we all know or have a pretty good idea WHAT an abused anvil looks like, but I wanted to ask, what exactly is considered abusing an anvil? I mean I know there is the obvious ones, no hitting on it with a big hammer without hot steel inbetween, no sledging on the tip of the heel or horn, and stuff liek that. But whjat actually causes saddling, and chipping, and horn and heel breaks?

Gooseneck auxiliary anvil. Modified anvil saddle for when you need to make a fork, or need a short bend more than 90*. Works for snub end scrolls, and has lots of uses. Thank you Irnsrgn for another good one.

  8. Started by Dr Dean,

Since my hunt for a anvil at a price that meets my budget has failed miserably so far I'm looking at using RR track for my anvil. What I have in mind is to use 2 pieces of track welded together. The bottom piece would sit normally and the top piece would sit upside down. The working face would be the side that normally sits on the ties. I plan to build up the web to make this thing stiffer( I need to practice my uphand stick anyhow). The other thing I have in mind to do is add a horn made from the top portion of the rail. I'm thinking that I'll wind up with a boat anchor but what the heck I'll get some welding practice and I can say I tried. I already have a 50 Lb box of …

  12. Started by Phil Patrick,

Hello All, I discovered three things of interest on my anvil this afternoon. I was cleaning off some old grime and what not off of it came acros three things, One, was what I assume to be the makers mark. In a circular fashion is stamped the words "Solid Wrought" with a "2" stamped in the center of it. Two, on the horn side foot are two "4"'s stamped on either side of the small hole on the foot. Third and I think the most intersting is what I believe to be one the anvil's former user's name "H.A. KEBBY" and the date "JAN 1881" chisled on the side. If anyone has some info on the makers mark or the numbers stamped on the foot feel free to let me know. I have own…

I have a line on a 185# Hill anvil (1800's according to the seller) but am questioning whether to buy it. The ones on ebay don't seem to move well and I'm wondering if they are poor quality or not. Thanks, Ryan

  17. Started by FredlyFX,

Hi everyone. I too have an anvil question. I bought another anvil yesterday. It's a big one, easilly over 200lb, but I havn't weighed it yet. I was hoping that some of you could take a look at it and help me identify it. I have put up a page on my web site with a bunch of pics and dimensions. It's at: FredlyFX.com anvil page All of the pictures are clickable links to ful size pictures. I think it is a cast steel anvil that was a factory reject. What do you guys think? If it is, should I smoth out the face and use it as is, or should I try to weld on a tool steel face? I'm leaning towards flaten and use it as is. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

  18. Started by Hillbillysmith,

I just started back to school at the local vocational school learning the welding trade. At our class, there is an anvil that is just sitting out back of the shop and it is BADLY fractured. It has a big crack all the way across where the horn meets the face, and another all the way across where the heel meets the face. They're deep too. They set it out back so noone would use it, and I might be able to get it. It has it's own stand too. My question is: how in the world would I be able to fix that (IF I can get it or course)? Should I just break off the heel and horn and just heat up the pieces and arc-weld the anvil on a high amperage to fuse it back together? Any help wi…

  19. Started by Blacksmith Jim,

I picked up a copy of this book through Inter Library Loan. Seems like good fun reading! I wanted to try and ID the year my PW was made, but I haven't had much luck. I think it must be between 1910 and 1930, but its hard to get any closer then that. There are a few differences on the marks on my anvil then the ones outlined in the book. My "Solid Wrought" marking actually has circular lines around it, and my weight markings don't have the central number in the Solid Wrought circle.... Postman doesn't mention either of those types of markings..... Anyway, cool book, I recommend it. I might have to purchase a copy now.

I plan to attach my new 70lb anvil to an 80lb+/- piece of mild steel by drilling and tapping the plate and using straps across the anvil feet. Would I gain any advantage by using JB weld between the plate and the anvil? The anvil stand will be made of 12"X12" MDF stacked and held together with two 1/2" all thread rods running vertically through the pieces. The thought is to be able to adjust the height by adding or removing pieces. Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  21. Started by Blacksmith Jim,

Hey folks, I was wondering where people suggest finding a good anvil to start with. I'm guessing I'm going to want a 150-200# London style anvil. A few people have suggested attending some of the hammer-ins, or ABANA or NWBA events. I guess there is a lot of equipment that gets sold there? Anyway, I'm located out in Eugene, Oregon. I've been contemplating posting Anvil Wanted signs out in some of our more rural communities near by. I'm guessing that simply asking around and maybe going to an event are my best bets, but I thought I would solicite advice from you folks. So.. Where is a good place to score my first anvil? Where did you find yours? Thanks! …
