My "day job" is a hospital pharmacist. One of my duties is to review the allergies of patients before dispensing any medications. It is important to know what type of reaction the patient had and this information is recorded in the computer by the nurse performing the admission assessment. A patient was admitted this evening who was allergic to penicillin. The type of reaction said "Turned bright cherry red all over". My immediate thought was "hit before you lose forging heat"! I know...sick, Sick, SICK! You might be a blacksmith if... Have a good one...bart

Glenn if I put this in the wrong place please move it for me Thanks I thought this may be of interest to you all. Jessie Ward (a very talented artist, blacksmith and farrier, her brother runs a well known farrier school outside of Martinsville, VA if I remember correctly) called me a few days ago and offered me a chance to go to Tanzania where she went to do some paintings at the orphanage there last year. We will be making security bars for doors and windows on a medical center (to open Fall 2009 and serve 1000+ people daily) in Ntagacha, Tanzania (this is between the Serengeti National Game Reserve and Lake Victoria near the Kenyan border). This is missionary work…

I said I wasn't going to do no forging till I get me a building built, But will probably attempt to make me some door hinges and a door latch. to put on it.. At least I think it's called ECD. (English Country Dance) My sister is on a homechool forum thing and a lot of the people from the forum are going to an ECD ball in Nashville TN. this Saturday. She wants to go and so I'm going too. (If everything works out and we end up going) I'm sure somebody on here knows more about that than I do. What would be proper to wear? I have an 1800's double breasted gentlemans sack coat that I know I could wear. I have a gray, fine leather vest, grey wool trousers, blue broad cloth trousers, tan coarse cotten trousers, and a green colonial formal undershirt. (I.E ruffles and stiff colar) Other than that I just have dress pants. Somebody he…

So if your from New England and you think it could work respond to this thread and let's see how many we are. Please be sure your location is listed in your user CP . Thanks, Dick

It's days like these that I'm glad my smithy is located in a two car garage. I went out to work on a project for a little and finish off my propane tank so I can refill it tomorrow. The sky was fairly dark but I didn't think anything of it, next thing I know it sounded as if someone was firing artillery at my roof! Then water started getting deep in front of the door and my empty slack tub that was sitting outside started floating away! Then it was over. Sometimes nature impresses me. Here's a picture of a piece of hail, the whole back yard was covered with it, almost looked like it had snowed! Just thought I'd share. -J

Got home from work tonight and thought because I've been hiiting the iron pretty hard over the last week (every night) and I have a demo day tomorrow at a historical day that Dale has invited me to, that tonight I would give my arm a rest. In stead what I thought was cause I feel to much air is being supplied to the fire when I shut the air gate off (vaccum cleaner no dimmer) I would rejig it with another air gate (vent) so away I went. Did that then thought better test it. So lit a fire with some charcoal I had. Burns well I thought, very controllable, yes have solved that problem,,,MMmmmm best put a bit of iron in the fire, only cause its going, just to be sure. Needle…

Here's an old time 'thinking puzzle' that might be fun to work through. I only know a couple, so feel free to post a possible answer .............or maybe you know of a different riddle or puzzle we can work on. Fox,Goose, and Corn A farmer had three items to take to town to sell. A fox, a goose, and a sack of corn. The only way to town was to cross an old rickety bridge. Because the bridge was so rickety, he could only carry one thing at a time across the bridge. To further complicate matters,he could not leave the fox alone with the goose, for the fox would surely eat the goose if given a chance. Also, he can't leave the goos…

Our waiting is now over. This morning my daughter gave birth to a little girl. And both are resting well. She comes in at 7# 6 oz. and 20 inches long with a full head of hair. So I would like to present to my extended family here, Madison Catherine, my second grand child. NO photo yet, as they are a bit prune textured at this stage :)

I was wondering has anyone ever try using rebar to make tongs? I have several sizes of rebar rods and need a couple of sets of tongs. Can it be done and if so is it worth it? I know grinding or beating the ribs off is a job in itself but is the rebar a good material for tongs? After getting several different drawings and instructions on making tongs I thought about trying to make my own. Plus I found a way to make my own charcoal as I have a lot of wood scraps from my wood shop and a small metal barrel why not, anything to save money. Again any input will be more then welcome. Moving my shop after many years. As I was going through the scrap pile, I had fun trying to remember the purpose of things that I found. Couple of 1/4 inch plates with slots - Oh yeah, that was to help disassemble and reassemble the drive chain on the manure spreader (fecal flinger). hook type assembly with a flat plate on the hook end - yep, when I had to straighten a horse trailer divider. Anybody have that problem - you've made some special tool for a single job, when you find it some years later it's hard to remember why you built it in the first place. Jack

This is how we Canadians honour our service people that gave their lives in the service of their country. I know that most Canadians are aware of what this is, and it was featured on one of the US news networks one time I know of as well. All the fallen soildiers are flown into Canadian forces airbase inTrenton, Ontario. They then travel by motorcade to Toronto where they are then sent to their hometown to be laid to rest. There are approximately 50 overpasses between Toronto and Trenton and everyone of them, IRREGARDLESS of the weather conditions, are packed with ordinary people of all ages and representatives of the police and fire Dept. of each area for each and every…

:D Will I'm as proud as a new Poppa as I just finighed my new forge. It's made from a car wheel rim where I added 5/16" plate to the bottom, with an old metal hair dryer as a blower. I know to many of you more experenced hands this may sound silly but for me, Wow. I fired it up with charcoal (all I had) and made a small tool to help manage the movement of fuel plus a small bracket to help hold my blower/dryer in place. As for the hair dryer it's an old one I had stored away in my parents things (there both gone now). It blows kind of slow to dry hair and has a switch to cut off the heat so it blows regular air without over heating the dryer. It's not strong or fast but…
