This probably a really stupid question to ask in a forum like this, but I need some advice to make a decision. I am a race car driver and do all my own wrenching. I need new rear brake calipers and my choice is between Cast Iron or Steel. Which one should I get? How do I tell the difference OR do I need to be concerned about any difference. The cost is marginal between the two, so that is not an issue. Thanks for any input.

What kind of music does everyone here listen to? I listen to a blues station on the radio while I'm working, but at home, mostly Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead. I would imagine that I'm a minority around here, but I was wondering what everyone else listens to?

OK you bunch of scurrilous ninny-hammer flycatchers, the challenge is simple to conduct a flyting contest (a contest of insults, one with a very long cultural tradition) without tripping the forum's word censor or violating the "bad words" rule. This is a good-natured contest of creativity, extra points for the historically obscure, immediate disqualification if any XXXXX's pop up in your post. Crude vulgarity, the pornographic and common swear words are obviously verbotten. Style, meter, and a rapier wit count. Lay on you sly knaves :p

This past Friday I had my first steroid injection in my fourth lumbar vertebra. Not too bad except it made my right foot feel like it had a bunch of bugs in it. That was very annoying to say the least. I did not sleep well Friday or Saturday nights and the overall pain was some worse then normal. Today, Sunday, the pain is about back to normal level of 7 or 8 so I guess that ain't all bad. I get my next shot the Monday before Thanksgiving.

What does steel skid strap and Christmas have in common? I don't think they have anything in common UNLESS your trying to decorate a..... Caboose.... Our cub scout pack volunteered to decorate a caboose that was given to the city in honor of the towns 150th anniversary. So as Cub Master I got the joy of "master minding" the project. It started out just to outline the caboose in lights, but then I made the mistake of stating that I thought it would be cool to use some motion lights to make it look like the wheels was turning. Another leader spoke up and said she would buy the lights. Have you ever tried to put Christmas lights on a huge round chunk of steel standing on e…

This has nothing to do with blacksmithing but I was headed to breakfast this morning and caught the sun just coming up at the bridgeton bridge. It was about 27 degrees out and the mist was rising off of raccon creek. Took these pictures and just thought I would share. John

My wife recently showed me a poem written by my three year-old daughter, Gianna. When My wife asked G, as I regularly call her, to describe the word Hot, she said: Hot Hot is Fire, Hot is a Hot Dog Hot is Metal Pretty cool I thought. and it makes me wonder how long it would take to roast a hot dog in my gasser just after it had been turned off.

I hope that everyone on the forum, American and Non-American, will take a moment to give thanks to the Most High for the gift of this life. We are all blessed...every footstep, every heartbeat, every breath is a gift from our Creator. He's given us a beautiful planet that supplies all our needs. He's blessed Americans especially with the greatest country in the history of the world. It is also my hope and prayer that each of us will take, at least, a moment to remember the men and women in the service of arms for our nation...their willingness to stand against the darkness and the blood they've spilled doing so has kept this nation free...and freed people and lands acr…

Just a few thoughts about "Why I sit in my shop" I like to sit in my shop. I have a favorite chair that I like to sit in when I sit in my shop. Sometimes I sit in my shop early in the morning and think of the day ahead. Sometimes I sit in my shop at the end of the day and look at the results of the day and what tomorrow

I live in a 1920's 3-story row house and my current work area is the basement, which is unfinished. I would really like to put a concrete floor in but I am not sure my idea would work. The ceiling is about 7 feet tall but with all the ductwork it makes it 6.5 feet tall in spots. I don

If you have a spare moment please visit the memorial page on my website in tribute to the friends I lost in Viet Nam Hanson Custom Knives. On this day we pay a passing tribute to all veterans, but remember these people had names, they had faces, they loved and were loved and as long as I live they will never be forgotten. Woody

I would like to toss out an idea, what if we had a database for visiting traveling smiths, we could have catagories for people with a room for a night, or just shop visiting hours etc. If this has been done, forgive me, I looked around and did not see anything like this. It is inspired by the fact that I travel a lot on business, and am always looking for smithys to visit and share stories etc. If there is already something in place, I'd like to add my name, the Finger Lakes is a really beautiful place to visit.

My father-in-law pays to have his lawn care done and he had a nice Craftsman riding mower he wasn't using any more so it followed me home. All I have in it so far is $35 for 2 new tubes for the back tires. I'll have to get a new battery for it. The one thats in it has a date of 2002 on it. It's a 12 horse Briggs and Stratton w/ electronic ignition. Anyway...I put fresh gas in it and used the jumper cables and my pick up and she fired right up...but it's ain't running right. I took some video of it with my birthday present (Flip Video) and up-loaded it to youtube. YouTube - 12 horse engine running bad Whats wrong with a small engine that runs like the one in the …

I got a call from the neighbor across the street last night at 1:30 AM to tell me my garage door was left open. I thanked him and headed out to close it. He called back and told me not to go out there as there was someone in the garage. OK, I go back and put on my pants and picked up the 12 ga. It is a police shotgun with 5 rounds of 00 Buckshot. The neighbor saw the culprit running down the street and followed him. My wife called 911. Hidden behind an air conditioner unit a block away was $1500 worth of my power tools. The Harris County Sheriff arrested him on the spot but I was up for another 2 hours while they photographed each tool and logged its S/N. This mo…

I am under the assumption that each person that comes here to I Forge Iron does so for different reasons. So I thought it might be a neat idea to take a moment or two and tell what part of IFI we like most and why... James PS... I would really like to see the moderators and administrators chime in on this one as well... So everyone think about it and let us in on your what and why...
