Whew! you're back! I had gotten by the cold sweats and trembles. But I was getting a little irritable, somewhat disfunctional, and just a little anxious. BUT now you are back, safe and sound. I haven't even had time to see if you are new and improved. Anyway, THANK YOU GLENN and ANDREW, I for one appreciate the hard work you do. Thanks

Well, I have changed my name.... "Pine Cone Forge". Formaly it was Dean's Smithy, which was ok I guess. Wife was setting up a new email account for the business and asked me what I wanted to use, "Dean's_Smithy"? Wel, as I mentioned in another post here I had been thinking of the new name so I just went for it. No big deal really, just different. I've got 60 acres of pine trees and I use the pine cones to start my fires in the forge, hence the name.

Just my .02 Since I discovered this site something like two years ago now I have seen it change alot and that has always been for the better. I have learned an awful lot here about smithing and a thing or two on other stuff as well. I have met quite a few genuinely nice folks here and am better for it, without IFI our paths never would have crossed. Thank you all. Sure, there are a few BP's I'd like to see again and perhaps submit one or two of my own to share and I trust that will be in due time so no biggie. The chat has always been a great place to go and as with other changes in the past I trust the teething will work its way through and will be for the better …

With much of the U.S. going into the 'deepfreeze'.....and the current hard times a lot of folks are seeing, It's a good idea to check on older folks, the sick, and the disabled in our communities. We should make sure they have food and heat. Folks on fixed incomes often face difficulty making ends meet toward the last of the month. Not enough money for medicine, heat, and food. If we cannot help them ourselves, we should notify local authorities. James

As a long time member of this time honored tradtion I'd like to find out what others are planning for the spring while sitting in warm chairs close to the fire? I have the various seed and nursery catalogs piled up by my chair. I'm starting to get some beekeeping books out to reaquaint myself with my Vernal chores. These are really cutting into my Blacksmith bookreading time, but that seems to maintain itself as a top priority. What I find interesting is that Blacksmithing is not really a seasonal endevour like my other jobs. I decided to not push myself to get my shop together. I'm easing into that; I want to set myself up for success along those lines. So what …

Fellow smiths, I was just wondering how many of you have been involved in any kind of internet shenanigans. I just recently found myself attacked on a bulletin board, obviously the person did not know whereof they spoke, and it showed, yet it was the anonymous snaky kind, and it occurred to me, I have now had 3 different kinds of internet attacks, from Ca to NY, IT IS SO EASY TO POST WHATEVER YOU WANT, DAMAGE A PERSONS REPUTATION TO THE 9TH DEGREE, AND DO IT ALL INVISIBLY, it just stuns me. Stolen ID's, you name it, if you want to vent, do it here so we can all learn the different ways these cowards are doing their backstabbing.

I stumbled onto a real gem today. It is called Open Office and it is basically a knock off of MS Office. The download site is OpenOffice and the program is completely free. No strings attached but they do ask for a donation. It is fully compatible with MS Office; it will read any MS Office document and MS Office will read any Open Office document. If you are looking for a cost effective alternative to MS Office, this is a good choice. Or you can pay $400 for MS Office and help keep Bill Gates out of the Poor House.

I do not know who wrote this or whom to give credit. I wish I did because it is touching so I thought I would share it. New Christmas Poem TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK …

I'm doing a school project on oxyacetylene torches (public high school) and I need some photo's of them, either directly of them, in use, any neat ones, etc. I really dig vintage pictures of them too. I saw some back, but don't remember where. Thanks! -sammy

Harbor Freight has a truck bed crane for $99 ($89 in the store) that I finally got installed in my Tundra: Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices I did this to allow me to safely move my anvil in and out of the truck bed when going to demos and HABA meetings. Works slicker than snot on a glass doorknob! I bought a 48" length of 800# chain and a matching link and made a figure 8 with the removable link at the cross point. I slip the loops over each end of my anvil and hoist it up with no effort at all. I hate all this mechanical claptrap but the orthopedic surgeon that fixed my back said no lifting for a year. OK, gotta keep my back warranty in ef…

Hey everyone, Since the baby arrived back in May, and the wife shifted over to a funky split 2nd/3rd shift, I haven't had a lot of shop time outside of about one day a weekend. In the meantime I'd been looking for a hobby (cause I just NEED another hobby:D ) that I could work on in the comfort of my living room and/or garage. I'd picked up some leather straps and buckles a while back to make a replacement set for some old climbing spikes we have and thought to myself "Hey, this is kinda fun". Forward a couple months to Christmas time and Tandy leather is having a pretty decent after Christmas sale. Needless to say, I found my new hobby:) While the sale prices were rea…

It has been a lean year financially. I told the wife a few days ago, that I wished I could sell a piece of ironwork before Christmas. It's Saturday night. The phone rings. A previous customer request a knife and sheath to give as a gift on Monday. I explain I don't have the time as I will be busy all day on Sunday. They are not deterred. I quoted a price that should have turned them away. About an hour later the price in full is delivered to my door. Guess who will not be in bed asleep Sunday night. Be careful what you ask for. You might get it!
