Hydraulic presses, Fly presses, etc

  1. Hi all, Prompted by a comment about tooling pics, here is a nice set-up I didn't do. Is at a local technical college I go to. Red thing is a soft plastic/ hard rubber that strips the job off the punch, after cutting. cheers, AndrewOC

I wonder if an electric log splitter could be converted into a blacksmith hydraulic press?

My new toy, a fly press by Sweeney & Blocksidge, Birmingham. Vital stats are; 5" throat, column to centre of screw 7" clear from bed to guides 18" swing of handle Screw diameter; (very approximate) 46mm pitch; (very approximate) 63mm Four start thread. Stop nut handle is broken off and it has no balls (where have i heard that before?!). But I'm definately not complaining; price was below $200. Appeared on the Bay-of-E, from a dealer i've known for years, realised this once I heard his voice on the phone. I am curious to know the rating; no such marking. I had a quick google images search, which tells me they are relatively common in the UK, can be …

I'm curious I've got access to a cheap 30 ton press.. I was hoping it was hydraulic but looks like it is air powered. Has anyone have any input. Would this make a good option. Its made by American Forge & Foundry. Part#852SD Other than needing a good air compressor would this be a good alternative to hydaulic press's. Thanks much! Cameron

Im new to building presses other than a couple big slow moving presses at the shop for straightening shafts and pressing bearings and bushings.... just general repair shop type use. But I recently decided to start building my home equipment collection and have an idea. I REALLY want to build a fly press as most of my home use will be cold forming sheet metal and ornamental/decorative grooving and stuff. But occasionally I'd like to have the ease of a hydraulic press as well. Rather than building 2 units is it possible to build a hydraulic press with large ram ports and large plumbing and control it with a "flywheel" like a fly press? I like the idea in my head of being ab…

  8. I was planning on making Batson's H frame press according to his directions, but in the materials list it calls for 3 x5 x 1/4" angle for the four uprights. this seems a little light to me and when I look at similar presses like the carolina custom knives 24t press the uprights appear to be 3x 5 x 3/8". anybody made one or have any recommendations? also, last time I was at the scrapyard I came across two pieces of 5 x5 x 1/4" square tubing and I thought I could make the uprights out of that instead for a design similar to the Claiborne press only having the cylinder on the bottom pushing up. this would be the cheapest option, but I want to make sure it is strong enough…

  9. Started by bottles,

Hi quick question on power (psi) versus speed of ram (or pump)? I have a 3 phase 2.2kw (3hp) motor run via a vfd. It has a 4cc (0.25"?) pump running at 1400 rpm. It will easily hit 3000psi at 50hz. My ram is 4" and moves around 1/2 per second at 3000psi. I have a pressure regulator before a solenoid block. The solenoid diverts to tank when not engaged. When the ram moves and contacts hot metal it takes about half a second to reach 3000psi during which time the dies suck out the heat. It does move a reasonable amount of metal. BUT if I increase frequency to 100hz this would give 3 gpm increase the ram speed and dropped the max pressure to 2000psi am I likely to see an…

Hi all, Quick question, I can get hold of a full working set (cheap) of hydraulics from a large delivery vans tail lift, not the weedy little ones, the type you wheel a pallet on to. Any good for a small forge press? I don't do massive billets of pattern welded steel and only have the tinyest of workshops, but would like to reduce some of my anvil time to appease neighbors noise wise.

I've come across a few topics and threads that have a list of required parts for a press build and the odd one where press drawings were at one time posted but since deleted....... Im not set on any press in particular yet, many designs out there, more less looking for dimensions and measurements of already ones built if available..... maybe someone has kept there drawings or sketches from their build and wouldnt mind posting......thx

Just wondering if anyone has any basic info on a Mills hydraulic press, I would like to know some basics. How suitable are they for general day to day blacksmithing? Are there parts still assessable for maintenance? What's the speed like? Etc etc… thanks

  16. I have an Adams #2 Fly press that I got a few years ago (second hand). When I got it I took it apart so I could thoroughly clean everything and inspect for any damage. I noticed right away that there is one tine ¼ - 20 screw is all that is left holding mystery part A that is attached to the main thread (with one Allen head screw that I cannot remove) to mystery Part B that is attached to the ram with two push pins. Well when new both mystery parts A and B would thread together before you tightened the ¼ - 20 set screw. Well, over the years and previous owners the threading on both parts is gone so the only thing that holds the ram to the main thread is the ¼ - 20 set scr…

  18. I am beginning the build of a TA Toler style 20 ton mini hydraulic forging press. One of my specific goals for this process is to use it to forge a larger rounding hammer for myself. I don't often have a striker available so I'm hoping this Press will help. Anyone else out there use one of these small presses in hammer making? If so any advice pictures or other information would be appreciated. I plan on making dies that are mirror images of my top tools used in hammer making. The attached picture is not my press but one I found on the Internet and similar to what I'm planning. Quote

Well Folks Joerg Sprave, a man that looks like an 80's action figure and acts like a cartoon has a video where 7kg of round stock ram is sent crashing in what looks like a 20kg peddinghaus anvil using about 200kg worth of theraband gold.

Recently got a total score on a fly press for only $50. Brought it back to my shop cleaned it up oiled everything up and built a stand for it and got it anchored in the concrete. Started building some tools for it and realized that I have an issue I can't figure out how to solve. i was making some pins for bending material out of 1" stock and went to set the stop on the screw so I could get a consistent bends for multiple pieces of material and realized that the threads for the screw do not go down far enough to set a stop for any material less than 1" thick. The only solutions I can see would be raising up the pins on the baseplate, but the problem with that is its…

I'm starting to build an H-frame forge press and haven't found this bit of info - Do I set the distance between the cylinder and the bottom die plate so when the cylinder is fully extended, the top and bottom dies just touch? Is there any reason it would be better to set the distance closer? I didn't see this info in Batson's book. Thanks

This is down at the scrap yard. obviously the ram needs to be changed but I was wondering about the structure. It is about 12 inches wide in the opening and obviously I would have to weld a flat plate on instead of curved. I can only assume this was used to cut pipe.

  23. I have an Indian made number 4 manual c-frame fly press, with a flywheel(not ball weights). It would be really handy if I could have 2 hands free to hold the workpiece and top tooling. Treadle/power hammer/hydraulic press are better suited for this, yes. But I was curious if anyone has ever converted their small manul fly press to a motorized friction press, or devised a way to manually operate it with their foot.

Hopefully I will be able to transport my presses home this weekend from where that are being stored for me. I'd like to see what tooling sets you have made for yours photos essential, and the work made. My plans are to make a slitting chisels and drifts for doing mortices on the round, square & diamond, also a set for hammer eyes, a flatter. Possibly a mould for fireplace shovel pans. I'm sure there are many other tools, operations, and ideas I haven't even considered so please share.

my aim is to make a small forging press with a separate power pack that can be used where it is needed and put away when not. I have 2 cylinders, the first is pictured here and I expect delivery of the second one this week. first one is 200mm stroke 80mm bore and 40mm rod, when I got it it had a cross tube on the rod end and this had to be removed to take the tool holder. I also added a spacer inside to prevent the cylinder from fully closing so I had enough rod to put the tool holder on. The housing for the cylinder is 100mm square tube with a slot milled in it for the fittings and a 30mm hole for the mounting pin at the top. also pictured is wha…
