I don't know if this is where to ask this, but this morning I started a thread in the Press area showing an OBI for sale on Ebay, and now it seems to be either moved or removed. Is there a rule I don't know about that we're not supposed to give links to for-sale ads? I hope I didn't do something bad. Or is there somewhere on this site for that purpose that I haven't found? Just curious. I hope it isn't an OBI bias. That would make people here pressist. Ha ha! Joel

Hi, Firstly, yes I do want to build a forging press. No, I don't know anything about hydraulics, BUT I'm very keen to learn. Could someone please explain to me in plain English the what, where and how's about forging presses. Also could someone give me an idea of what I must look for and where I can find it in south Africa. I have recently made a protype log or wood splitter and I thought the guiding system would lend its self to a good forging press which has a great amount of acess to the working area. It also has a lot of torsional strength as the frame post is made from 200x100x9 RHS and the guide plate is 16mm bissalloy 400 which is a wear resistant steel with about 3 times the strength of mild steel. Instead of the head having a blade there could a tool holding socket

I am converting a log splitter into a forging press. The log splitter is mounted linearly with the motor at the end of the beam. I have a problem of height! If I place the worktable at 36 inches and keep the 15 inches of space between the table and the top of the ram, I miss 6 inches on the ceiling. My options are: Put the worktable lower, about at 28 inches Reduce travel at 8-10 inches Lower the table AND reduce the travel Remove the motor and oil tank, remove 12 inches of beam and reinstall the motor back on the other side of the beam. I just bought a Denbigh #4, it's on the way to me now. It's a tad crusty as far as paint is concerned but it's mechanically sound. It does need a counterweight ball added, which is being shipped with it (a large ball bearing I believe) I'm not sure how the counterweight should be mounted, I assume it's just a ball with a tapered hole in the middle? Anyone have any experience with "The Denbigh" presses? Anything to be aware of? I plan to tear it down, clean/strip and re-paint it. The table is a bit narrow but has a large plate with mounting holes to be secured to the floor. So far, this year I've added some great tools to the shop including a much nicer Swedi…

hello..i might be in the wrong place with these questions. but im looking to build a hydraulic press. to use when forging . there are lots of designs’ out there on the web and i think i have most of it all figured out apart from the power pack i have acquired for free it came off a large road barrier system. operated by a key card system.and im guessing that the hydraulic ram must had a spring return ram [ that and the Wight of the retractable barrier] as on the power pack i have there is only one hydraulic line going out .i have got a photo here and just a have a few questions as the people at the local merchants weren’t much help at all SO FEEL FREE TO TELL ME I HGAVE I…

Hello Seeing as this is my first post, I'll introduce myself. I am a 17 year old interested in blacksmithing in the UK. I have started to get together a blacksmithing shop so I can make all sorts of items, hopefully axes as I collect them, knives don't really interest me much. Anyway, I've bought a press from a dispersal sale due to a blacksmith retiring and all items being auctioned off. In the corner of the room was this huge, beast of a press. I managed to get it for about £330 or around $430. I must admit at the time I thought it was a power hammer until buying it and actually reading the plate on the machine. Since this is a lot about bases, any tips for a poured concrete base? My shops small and we don't have a welder. My No.5 press. Make a template of the base for proper threaded bolt placement in the concrete. any tips for concrete base?

REf: Craigslist link removed The owner wants $150 for this press. It is a beast. I have not been able to find any information on it. The owner inherited it and thinks it was a custom built machine. Is this a decent press for forging? For this price? (Doesn't include delivery, unloading, or assembly.) Does anyone know more information about this unit?

I know there isn't really sufficient information here, but please bear with me. Is there any chance the press in the attached would be suitable for forging (primarily for making pattern welded billets and punching hammer/axe eyes)? I'm not that familiar with presses, but have done some homework, and know that the 15-60 ton range is reasonable and that cycle speed is one of the critical parameters. The hydraulic cylinder here looks smaller than I've seen for most hydraulic forging presses and the hand cranked "winch" on the side worries me as well. As the title states, our forge council, the Mississippi Forge council has enough members interested in building a press that we are seriously beginning to gather ideas for a group press build. Similar to a group build for tire or treadle hammers, the idea is that we would obtain or design detailed plans, collect some up-front-money for materials, gather them and then establish a time and place to build 6-10 hydraulic forging presses over a few days. My primary question here is, does anyone have experience doing a group build of a hydraulic forge press and what design, if any, would lend itself to this type of build? We are thinking of a materials cost of around 1500-1800…

Hi All, I've been working on a forging press for the last few months, and I finally got it up and running over the weekend. Here is a video of me very clumsily trying to forge with it. (Its the first time I've ever used a press so I've got some learning to do) twin 4" cylinders at 3000psi will deliver over 37 tons. The two stage 22/7 GPM pump is driven by a 14hp engine. Eventaully, I'll put the pump assembly in a lean-to outside the shop, but for now it is sitting just outside the overhead door. In my eagerness to try it out, I forgot to make keepers for the dies, and they started to move on me. This is a pretty dangerous situation that needs corrected…

Hi all, I really do hope someone can help me out here....we have a LAYCOCK 60-ton Hydraulic Press and I am desperately trying to find a copy of the Maintenance & Service Instructions. lathes.co.uk do sell one but they are off now until the 17th Sept 09..... What would it take to make this press a functional press for forging. My understands is that more speed is needed. The price is right and it comes with a small metal brake.

Parts are ordered hopefully all goes well were goin for between 16/20 ton sqeeze it will have a 5 hp motor 3/11 gall pump 5'' cyl with a 10 '' travel duel valve .Lol i aint no hydralics guy but me buddy is im buildin the base and frame he's hookin er up total cost will be between 2200/3000 grand est and its goin to be mobile.

so I have a 12 ton shop press. What can I use to modify it to make an effective forging press? I know the air-actuated hydraulic bottle jacks can be rather slow....if speed is a concern with regards to needing to constantly re-heat, that's a sacrifice I am willing to make. however, if there's a reasonably priced higher-speed air actuated hydraulic bottle jack I can use, any suggestions? I can reinforce the frame of the press as needed. Just trying not to spend $1500 on this. Would prefer to spend 1/3 of that or less!
