Ok folks so have been working pretty much with wood my whole life. Save for the rigging, but that was mostly building vessel moorings. Don't know much about presses and what the capabilities might be, but I'm sure I don't want my finger under a 3 ton.I would like to know the size requirements of a press capable of making a small indent into 1/8" sheet steel. Literally the first step in making a carbon steel skillet. i would have thought maybe a 3 ton arbor press- NO WAY. 1/8inch is some tough stuff. How about maybe an 80 ton hydraulic press? I have the dies made already, they are a 3"L section of 10' ID pipe, with an 8" round billet about 2 inches thick to do the press. S…

I just finished revamping my 24 ton press. Remote located the power pack (5hp 5-7 gpm), positioned the valve so the hoses are protected better, and droped the die shelf 7” so I can split billets for feather damascus. The pump and valve are of unknow age. The 5” x 8” ram is a couple years old. The press had been in service before and worked fine. Ram is still moving around 1”/sec so volume is moving. I have checked and double checked the plumbing, have trned down the relief valve, and replaced the pressure gauge, and still cannot pull more than 400-500 psi when I should be getting 2500+. I live remotely so not a cakewalk to get a hydraulic company to pay a…

Hi Y'all, So I've been doing loads of research and designing and I've finally come to the stage where I can start ordering the parts for the press. Anyways here's my reason for posting, my calculations and the page about the pump say for a 10.51 GPM, 3000 psi, 2 stage pump I need a 7 hp motor. BUT Coal Iron Works 25 ton press uses only a 5 hp motor for a 13 GPM pump and McNabb's 24-ton press uses a 3 hp (not sure what pump though)!?! Am I doing my calculations wrong or something? I'm going to be using a 5 X 8-inch tie rod cylinder. Thanks in advance! Here's a quick "animation" of the press. The press is just over 7.5 feet and working height is a…

I've decided that I need a press - a hydraulic one (I would like to stay in the $1,000 range) - mainly for forge welding. Suggestions/recommendations?

Yesterday I was gifted a brand new 4" bore, USA made hydraulic cylinder, by a friend. it has a 2" dia rod and a 28" stroke. it is rated for 3000 or 3500 psi (my CRS is kicking in). A 28" stroke is longer than one on any other press I could find. Someday I think I'd like to build a H frame hydraulic forging press for making hammers & Damascus billets, etc. I have been researching on the web, but there is not a lot about the maximum length of stoke. However, I did learn that the longer stroke should not reduce the power, or speed (IPS), other than it takes longer to travel the full stroke. Then there is the size consideration too as the height of the H frame …

Has anyone tried out a fly press from india mart? These caught my eyes and was wondering if anyone has had any experience from them?

So I'm getting one of those fancy 16 ton coal iron works presses soon and I want to make it as useful and efficient as possible and I know tooling is the name of the game! I personally like the idea of using standard top and bottom tools within reason because you should be able to use them everywhere, from power hammers, to strikers, to under the fancy press. But would love to have pics of your favorite tooling and how you use it!

Came across this thing at a used machinery dealer the other day. It's a John Heine 12 ton mechanical press. Can these be converted to be used for forging? Price is really good but that's all I would need it for.

I'm building a stand for my #6 flypress and am wondering if I'm building it to light duty. Looking at my steel pile, I have a bunch of 4"x4"x1/8" square tube for the leg columns/bracing and some 1/4" plate steel for the top of the stand, I plan on having 3 or 4 legs bolted to the floor. Will those 4x4 legs probably keep up the the flypresses torqe without distorting?

Any help appreciated. I am starting to assemble components for building a hydraulic press. I have purchased this hydraulic pump because it seem to be all set up double action control valve with a foot pedal control built in. It puts out pressure to 10,000 psi. The cylinder I purchased has a max rating of 3000 psi. Do I put some kind of pressure relief valve between the two to make sure the pump does not exceed the cylinder's max rating of 3,000 psi? The pump has a pressure dial, I could just make sure I don't exceed the pressure manually, but though the relief valve would be a better design.

I've got the bug for a press after seeing the hydraulic press that the club bought recently, but I don't have $3,500 lying loose at the moment. Would a 20 ton air-assisted hydraulic bottle jack do the job if mounted in a press frame? I have a large press I built 35 years ago, and adapting that jack to the press can be done in short order. One drawback is having to manually release pressure on the jack each time to get it to retract. For the difference in price, I think I can handle that inconvenience.

I know the conventional wisdom is to buy as big a press as you can afford, but I'd like to have some change left over for beefing up other parts of my shop. Is there a good reference for the capabilities of a #4? I'm willing to come down from the desired #6 if I can do some of the work hot instead of cold. bending 3/4" - 1" bar stock and 1/4" plate are my upper limits. Punch/drift 1/4" bar. Maybe punch/drift smaller hammer stock, but that would be on the dream side, but probably unlikely. I'm still working my way through this topic area, so my apologies if I've missed a related post. Happy Holidays to everyone, Dave

Have most of my parts gathered for a forging press. 5hp high torq motor, 2200 psi vane pump, 5in bore 14in stroke cylinder, and a valve. Have been planning on building a uncle all's type press and have all the metal to build but with the 14in cylinder will make the bottom die over 50in from the floor. My question is which press type has the best combination of durability, versatility, and usability. Of the uncle all's design, c frame or h frame.

First off I am prepared to get a lot of negative feedback on this design as it is to be made out of wood mostly. Safety is the number 1 concern and I don't want to jump into anything I am not prepared for. I am planning on using a 10 ton pneumatic bottle jack as the power. From my research to the tensile strength of 4x4 pine ( I was not able to find much) told me that a 6 ft long piece has a constant load bearing of just under 1000 lbs when hung from the middle. This design is estimated to be 3 foot wide by 5 ft tall, and there is supposed to be an even distribution of pressure along the beams. Any input is appreciated.

So i finaly got down to builiding tooling for my new flypress . I did find a reasonably priced tool holder online. So with my new tool holder installed i was hand fitting the shaft of my first tool to the 1" scocket on the tool holder . The shaft s i am making are from precsion ground 1" 1018 stock with shaft collars welded on. The shaft slid in eaisily by hand then stuck fast , i tried at this point to remove tge tool as i assumed some fitting might be necicary but i could not remove the tool shank from the holder i removed the tool holder from the press and clamped it in a vise and i still could not get the tool to budge i hoped twisting might get it to move but that d…

So I've seen a few people ask this but not get any good answers other than using to put a makers mark, but I have a pretty big arbor press with a die for ball bearings. I'm just trying to think of what I could use it for, I could maybe use the die as some kind of swage type thing on top of my anvil. Would it be possible to make a die for bending sheet metal maybe? I'd like to get some use out of it but not sure how I would yet.

So i finally pulled the trigger on a # 5 flypree from OWA and while i am wating for it to arrive i have been reading up on tooling. I made it to ron reils page on flypress toolong through ABANA and saw his integral tool holder wich is just a extra tool holder clamped into the tool holder that is allready stock on the press ? Is there a good reason for this? It seemes to me if top tools are made correctley with a flange so the force is on the ram face not the end of the tool. Then this tool holder idea is just a silly way too waste 3" of working room. Or am i missing somthing?

Had a close one last Thurs. While forge welding a billet for feather Damascus my press blew a return line. There is not supposed to be any pressure in the return line, but let me tell you a 16 gal pump will spray hyd fluid about 10-15 feet.. The bad thing was the forge was to close and the spray from the leak went right into a 2000 degree plus forge. Instant huge fire. I was operating the press when it happened. Worked fast shutting things down, the press, the forge, grab the fire extinguisher , spray the xxxc out of everything. Have you ever tried to cool down a 2000+ degree forge full of hyd fluid. Finally got the flames out and wheeled the forge outside. No dama…

Hi gents, Skip in a couple of minutes to see the jig and how it works. After the video was filmed I bent 20mm (3/4") square and 25mm (1") round mild steel cold. As mentioned I'll be upgrading the cross bars or bottom dies if you like to something much thicker. Ideally 2" round but I'd settle for 1.5" round. Just depends what I can find next time I'm down at the scrap yard. Sadly this is simply not a priority for me at the minute. Cheers Andy

Hi all, i am just about done a forge press (air/hydraulic, for cost reasons) and have made good progress so far I think. See: I have to finish the return springs and the foot controls but it's starting to take shape. I think I over-built by 10x, especially for an air jack. Also, I wonder about the middle h bar not staying perfectly level. Any suggestions are welcome.

Having a 5hp hydraulic pump givin to me in trade for a little labor. It is pump and motor only. The guy bought it used as a working unit but has never used it. Is there an economical way to test the unit without buying valves and hoses? Most likely won't build a press if this unit is doa and would rather avoid buying parts that won't be used if pump is not good.
