  2. Hello! I have a question about a 4-way directional control valve. I have build a forge press for my smithy, and I’m wondering if there is a power stroke port on my control valve. The system is a 25 ton press, but I don’t feel like I am getting the power that the system is designed for. I’ll attach some pictures. I’m wondering if I have my hoses from the control valve and DA cylinder connected correctly. I installed everything to the manufacturers specifications. Also, regarding the control valve, I have to lift up on the handle to articulate the cylinder downward, and push down on the handle to articulate the ram upward. Can I reverse the hose positions on the control val…

  3. Hey people I'm at the point of wanting to step up my forging of large stock a bit mostly in the form of axes. What do you guys recommend for a next step I was thinking a log splitter press mostly because I've heard good things about them online and they often fit in my 600 dollar budget but is there a better option? Thanks for any help:) PS What forum would I ask about where to find axe steel with out having to buy it new. Thanks. Nick

  4. Started by jeks,

I purchased a #2 fly press but am unable to remove the slide from the screw to fully disassemble the unit for rehab. The front of the slide has 2 holes, from which I removed the screws. The bottom one is empty but the top one seems to have something in it, under where the set screw made contact. I'm not sure if this is something I should drill out or not as one possible way to free things up. The slide has a split collar on the top face, but I can't figure out how to remove it base on where it is located. I have tried using the main screw to leverage it out by placing pieces of steel between the top housing and the slide body in order to draw the split collar…

  6. As I'm getting closer to finishing up The Presscious, I find myself thinking about tooling. Most of the videos out there of hydraulic presses in use show dies of various shapes attached to the press itself, and I'm planning on making (for starters) a pair of flat and a pair of round dies. However, I don't see many videos of people using hand-held tools (hacks, fullers, flatters, etc) the way they do with power hammers, and I'm wondering why. Is this a safety issue? Or just uncommon?

  7. Started by Peppie,

Had so much fun building my last press, thought I would have another crack at it. The pic below is a rough draft! All the details can be worked out as long as I have a solid foundation. The foundation (frame) is a piece of 1" plate cut to the drawings dimensions Shooting for a 16 ton press. 4" bore with a 6" stroke. 5ph motor to drive a 11gpm two stage pump. That will provide " almost" 1" per second on the second stage of the pump, according to Batson. The press will sit on top a custom built I-beam to strengthen the bottom. (Not in drawing, ran out of paper space). I know a few of you press guys out there will be able to say ," yes this is poss…

  8. Started by JHCC,

The industrial surplus warehouse near me has a couple of hydraulic presses listed under the name of "inverted press". They look like they have fairly complete hydraulic systems with pumps, controls, etc all complete, and for the price (about $150) look like they might be a reasonably affordable entry point into hydraulic pressing. It looks like they push/pull a shaft up through a hole in the center of their top, but I have no idea how this was used originally or for what. I won't post the commercial links here, but here are a couple of images: My thought is either to flip one of these upside down (invert the inverted, as it were), …

Purchased this fly press yesterday, on getting it home found that the ram as a threaded tool location approx 11/16" and not a 1" hole and locking bolt. What your thoughts on drilling out to 1" and adding a tool locking bolt ? Regards Paul

picked up 4 fly presses recently but 2 of them had no weights so im thinking of getting suitable sized mild steel balls, drilling a hole through them then getting them hot and drifting the hole to a square taper to suit

Finished this 15ish ton press based on Jim Batson's great book. The goal was to be able to punch a hole in a hammer billet then be able to drive a drift in and forge the blow out from the punching on both sides in one heat. I wanted speed instead of tonnage for less heat input in the punch tip for less galling and damage to it. I accomplished that goal but currently do it two separately to take my time getting the eye right and not have to worry about doing the rest. The motor is a 10hp 3600rpm baldor motor, the pump is a 22 low pressure by 7 high pressure and the tank is about 35 gallons. press video.mp4.crdownload

I've made a design for a 20 ton forging forging press that i'm planning on building. the main beam will be an HE-b 200 I-beam that will be stuffend up with 2 10mm thick plates in the I-section to prevent torsion in the I-beam. total height will be 1400mm and the usable stroke is 350mm. i'm no quite sure how i'm going to attach the dies but i'm leaning towards drilling and tapping holes. any idea's, advice and pitfalls would be nice thanks

I am also in the process of building a press and thought I would share the build. I got all the steel and ready to start cutting. 8ft tall and 16" wide with an 8" wide opening in the front and 4" wide opening on the sides. The die plates are 16" long and lock into place with a stud that fits in a hole in the die plate backer and the support tube. All tubes besides the 4 uprights (1/4" wall) are 1/2" wall. The clevis on the ram and cylinder fit inside the tubing and the pin goes through the side wall of the tubing. Do any of you notice any problems with this design?

Hello to all! I bought a couple of days ago this fly press. It weights 700 kg and has a 3 lead screw. The fly wheel diameter is 120 cm (47 inches). I did find some German inscriptions on it, a serial number and a logo that seems to be three letters "CKZ". If anyone has any info about the origins of that tool and/or the pressing power of it, it would be nice to know. The wheel is stuck but according to the junkyard salesman it used to spin freely a couple of years ago, I am not sure if it will turn to be a good buy or a failure. For now i plan to soak everything into petrol for a week or two and after that try to spin the wheel. If it turns there is a question: shoul…

What type of control valve is the best for a hydraulic press, 16 ton.

  18. Started by Meridianfrost,

So I am a little bummed out. I am finally ready to buy a press, and Uncle Al was my guy. $3,500 for a 24 ton press, and I was home free. Well the good folks (and I do mean good folks. Nice as can be and make fine machinery) have raised the price of the 24 ton press by 17%, and it now costs $4,100, and $500 to ship it in the continental United States. I sent them an email, and asked what they may have done to the press to merit such an increase, and Uncle Al told me that the price of the parts have been gradually increasing over the past couple of years, and he needed to either raise the price or quit making them. I should have pulled the trigger last month, but I wasn't f…

  19. Started by Momatt,

Hey Guys, I would like to be able to forge larger stock in general and punching axe/hammer eyes with one has a lot of appeal. A power hammer is not practical for my situation but a press is very intriguing. I saw a homemade one for sale on craigslist (st louis) and considered it for about 10 minutes, it doesn't appear to be well made lots of 2 by 4s used in mounting the motor, pump and hoses that looks pretty sketchy although there do seem to be some good components used. Hoses exposed to hot iron could turn your workshop into quite a flame thrower i suppose. It seems common sense that with the forces involved a press coming apart could lead to a serious injury. O…

I just picked up a no. 5 flypress made in India. Looking online, I see they call out the hole in the base as 4" without the ring and 2" with the ring. I realize it's probably obvious, but why is there a ring in the base at all? metalmagpie

Hi! I am in need of advice regarding a fly press that has no stop on top of the screw to make it stop at the desired point. Can you please give me an idea on how to solve this? Will a split collar for hydraulic cylinder put on the screw work? Or will it damage the screw? Don't know the size of the press but the screw diameter is 60mm (about 2.36 inch).

  23. Started by BartW,

Hello All; I found an excentric press - it's not mine (yet) -, but it's for sale. But looking at the pictures, I thought If I add a linkage to make the excentric less rigid attached to the "punch", add a mechanism to control speed of the flywheel and an anvil; wouldn't that make this thing a small power hammer ? I mean it's already got most parts up to industrial specs like the drive wheel; the axle, the excentric, the guides ..

  24. Started by JHCC,

My local industrial surplus place has this interesting item listed, and I was wondering if it might be practical for a small forging press: The cylinder has a 2.5" bore and a 4" stroke. There are no dimensions given, but they have it listed as weighing 115 lbs; I'm guessing its no more than a couple of feet tall. To my inexperienced eye, this looks like it could be very handy for some smaller jobs, especially since I have neither the space nor the budget (nor indeed the wiring) for a full-sized press. What do you folks think? And how might might I expect to pay for the actual hydraulic pump, control mechanism, etc (ballpark, of course)? Many thanks.

Here is a quick video demonstrating the single strike mode. Basically you set the upper and lower limit, and upon pressing a foot button or biting the biteswitch, one cycle of the ram is completed. Again, the lower position is instantly adjustable. Please let me know what you think of this mode or if anything was unclear.
