Presses

Hydraulic presses, Fly presses, etc

  1. Started by Francois,

Hi. I am building a forge welding press to make damascus billets for knife making. I have most of the parts I need and I got them from classifieds so they are second hand. The cylinder I have is not the biggest thing int he world with a 15cm stroke and a 50mm bore. I wanted to make it press around 15 ton at 3cm per second, but this simply is not possible with the motor I have (single phase, I would need around 700 bar and the pump I would need for that will basically kill the motor). I have estimated that I could get a max of 4.5 ton at the 3cm per second speed and that is pushing the limits. Would 4.5 ton be enough or am I seriously wasting my time? Will it draw the ste…

24 ton. 12" X 10" X 1/2" web 53lbs per foot. There is 8" of webbing remaining on the bottom. 13" remaining on the top. Cut a 6 1/4" X 37" rectangle cut out for the ram and anvil. The cylinder is 5" bore, with an 8" stroke. Motor and pump will be sized for a 24 ton press. I am having two thoughts about connecting the ram to the push plate, and guides. The first picuture up has the wrong dimensions. But the design is the question, compared to the second design picture. My concern with the first drawing is that the ram push plate will want to rotate on the pin and cause the face plate ram guide to bind up on the webbing. My concern for the sec…

  3. hello again everyone, I was asking about fly pressed last time I was on here (I finally got one) and now I need help to fix the press rotating quite slowly. I plan to clean and recoil/lubricate the acme screw, as well as adjust the guides for the ram, any other tips anyone has would be great. the press is a wagner no1 (it's more than 1 ton press force) and I cannot find any info on it so any help would be great. thanks everyone in advance!!

Hello everybody just joined here. My question was if anyone has ever done business with blacksmithanvils.com? The have a #4 fly press for sale for $550 discounted from $1700. I cannot find any feedback on them and thinking they are a scam sight but slightly hopeful. I just wanted to ask the community if anyone had known of them. Thank you all for your time and forge on!!!

Wanting a press, but not having too much room or money. I needed a wood splitter, so got a 7 ton splitter, built adapters to use as a press as well. Have only used it twice, but it works great for my operation. I know I will not be able to do the big packs like the "big boys", but it serves me both ways as a splitter/ press. I currently have two sets of dies made, both work great.

I have a couple of issues with my new-to-me fly press on which I’d appreciate some advice. The first is that the depth stop is missing. Unlike some older presses and the modern Indian presses where the main screw itself is threaded to take a stop that comes to rest on the top of the frame (as on Anachronist59’s press in THIS COMMENT), mine has a threaded piece attached to the frame, that appears to take a threaded collar of some sort that limits the screw's downward travel. (ADDENDUM: the threaded piece atop the frame appears to be 2-1/4" dia. x 10 tpi x 2-1/2" tall.) I suspect that the stop was originally a very heavy split nut locked in position wi…

Here are a few of the fly presses from my collection. I have an interest in preserving these great old machines. Many I have literally rescued from certain death in the smelter. All are Australian manufactured machines. I restore them by: Completely dismantling Stripping paint and grease from parts Regrinding damaged sliding surfaces zinc priming all parts to be painted. refinishing parts assembling and adjusting press I am looking at techniques of restoring well-worn presses by the addition of silicone bronze to replace metal that has been lost through wear. I am also fabricating custom made stands for some of the machines that don't h…

Hello all, I've recently been thinking about buying a fly press, but in aus they're pretty expensive usually. Could I feasibly convert an old kick press into a sort of fly press? They are similarly shaped heavy stands but it isn't something I've seen anywhere so I doubt it's a great idea. Any advice would be appreciated

I just finished my 20 ton forging press. Not counting my scrap steel in the frame, I spent about $130.

  10. Started by Laynne,

I purchased a #5 fly press from Old World Anvil about 14 months ago. Been using it fairly regularly. The issue I have is when I set the handle up to pull the flywheel it causes golfers elbow, never played golf in my life. When I set the handle up to push it causes my upper back to knot up to the point it's uncomfortable to breathe. Has anyone had issues like this and if so how do I fix it? I am considering selling it. Thanks for any input.

  11. I've got a #4 Flypress and have built a table (incomplete) for it. The legs are 4 X 3/8 Square tube welded to 3X2X1/4 channel between them. The unattached top is a piece of 3/4" plate that I plan to bolt to the legs. Was thinking of using 1/2 inch countersunk bolts, but was wondering if I should go larger, like 3/4-inch. I tend to overbuild things, and was curious what this group felt about bolt size for the table? I look forward to the discussion and thank everyone in advance for their response.

For those of you that have or are familiar with fly presses I’m very curious about the ratings. It seems like 3t to 8t are common. I know what a 25 pound power hammer can do vs a 100 but what sort of things do the big fly presses allow vs a smaller one? It seems like it’s a very useful tool for repetitive operations like cutting a line in. A bar for a ribbon twist, putting a precise offset in a tong handle, pressing in a touchmark or using in conjunction with a swage block etc. most of these operations don’t need a tremendous amount of force. Downside is a big one will probably cost more, be expensive to ship and be hard to install in the shop vs a smaller one.

  13. My rotator cuff surgery didn't happen on December 23rd. Deep down inside I was relieved. I was happy to get back to my long-shelved forge press project. I was going to buy a Coal Iron Works 12 ton press, but I found out it isn't really 12 tons. It's more like 9 tons. Plus it is about $3.5K. So, I designed this a year ago using James Batson's booklet and CIW's faux-12 ton H-frame setup and bought all the materials. My nephew is a fresh Mech-E grad, so he did some stress simulations to backup my calculations. The verticals are 3x3x1/4, the die plates are 1x4, the lower cross plate is four 1/2x4 plates welded together (I had plenty of 1/2x4 flat bar). I welde…

Hi, so there is a Dale pocket cutter near me listed on marketplace for fairly cheap the person selling it says they do not know what tonnage it presses at but by the looks at it it looks to be fairly sturdy with a large cylinder so I would think that it would be strong enough to become a forge press I just don’t know and I wanted more opinions on it. I’ll see if I can’t get a picture to work https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DUY0zsnlDRdf1tfjoQ3n8trkU_bkBEQyEOhg5Am6d4Y/edit https://ibb.co/NrPcB6G

Hi all, I'm looking for information on Perkins fly presses. I'm considering buying a #3, but haven't found much in the way of dimensions or what its capabilities would be. It seems that Perkins' presses run a bit bigger than other brands of a given number size (I understand the numbering system is manufacturer-specific). This video shows a #4 which looks to be pretty hefty. I was hoping to hear from somebody who's seen a #3 and might know how much of a difference there is between the two sizes.

  17. Long story short, I built a forge press and it works great. However, we are planning to move in the relatively near future; coupled with the fact that since we have a newborn now (6 weeks...super excited!!) and a recent promotion at work, I have had very little time to make it out into the shop. Which all leads me to considering selling it as opposed to packing it up and moving it. Has anyone sold a forge press that they built? Any issues or concerns with that? Would love to see what others experiences have been. For reference I attached the drawings I created in AutoCAD / Fusion360 while planning my build. The 'As-Builts' have some slight differences, but I need to…

Anyone on here have one of these? I bought this press a few years ago. It sat outside for many years and had some issues to be dealt with. Although the manufacurer is still in business today , I have not seen another one like this... thought you might like it. I did contact Schuler and got a reply with some info. Apparently there were 5 different types with 40, 50, 60, 72 and 80mm spindle. Mine has the 72mm. They were built between 1920 and 1935. I started to make some tooling for it but I really need to spend more time on that.

I have a 25 ton h frame press built using the plans found in Jim batson’s book build your own forging press. I’ve been thinking recently, if I were to buy a set of dies commonly made for an Ironworker or punch press, any reason I couldn’t also make them work in my forging press? Things are so much easier to do when the work isn’t hot. If I can punch plate cold (within the tonnage limitation of my press) it would save a ton of time either drilling or heating the piece. thoughts comments concerns appreciated! -nick

  20. Hi all, I'm working on turning a 22 ton forest king log splitter into a forging press. I bought this one last fall but never got around to converting it. I've wanted a press since I started making knives. I considered purchasing one however it is a little out of my price range. I have the steel, tools and (hopefully) the enginuety to make my own. I bought three log splitters before I found one that I liked. The reason it took me that many tries is because the previous splitter had too much wobble iln the guides. This one is adjustable (I can make my own tighter guide if I need to) because it unbolts from the I beam. I'm planning on cutting the wedge off, weldin…

  22. Looking for some guidance/ ideas to turn this screw press (originally a leather embossing press). The shape and strength are there, but the main issues I'm seeing are flat pitch lead screw (about 3 turns per inch), needs a ram block and guide, work holding/ tooling retention It currently has a flat platen that is supported by the big C frame, so I'm thinking of boring a hole for holding dies(not all the way through) and adding a plate with t-slots Adding a plate in the back of the throat to support ram block guides. The biggest constraint I'm seeing is a fast lead screw/ nut, so Looking for ideas for that. I currently have a pretty fast lead screw (1" 3 sta…

Hi folks has anyone tried making a forging press with electric forklift components I've recently brought a cheap one for the battery primarily for solar storage, I've been collecting parts for a press for a few years (cylinder, steel etc) and thought I might be able to use the motor, valves etc from the forklift and make a solar powered dc forging press any advice much appreciated Cheers tom

  24. Hi all. I have an opportunity to buy a flypress (john heine 182a). It's a three ton flypress if I'm not mistaken. Comes on a stand and total weight if stand and press is about 300 kg. I'm not however able to bolt the press/ stand to the floor where I live. Is that necessary with the amount of torque a flypress produces?

Happy Thanksgiving I am looking at a h frame press. it has a flange mounted cylinder 10” piston, 2.5” rod. does it need guides to work as a forging press? thank you!
