Hello, I have a Adams Fly Press #2 or #3 (guessing by the size) that I have been using for quite some time with no issues, that is until the other day when the rap dropped free from the shaft. I stopped and took the press apart (which is something I have never done) and it showed the threaded insert that is pressed and pinned in the ram as well as the end of the lead screw both have messed up threads. Does anyone have a good solution to fix the problem other than machining new parts? Thanks in advance!

In the stage before div . girprosjekt emerged a big old " good" jack that could lift more than one piece of bread . It was Homer who had one too many ... thank you! Various things were checked and it was just before I parked it behind the garage . Meanwhile, there appeared a nice 2 tonner on offer in Sweden , and the woman asked me if I wanted it as a Christmas present ? It was not easy to say no , I did not know if I at all would get the power back in the old Nike - jack ? But one day I got the spirit of me , and dismantled the master cylinder . Oh yes , there was a cracked gasket. Then I got courage, and checked out the prices and options . Price with TESS : about 500 …

Hey all, Just wondering if anybody had a source for hydraulic cylinders, such as could be used in a forging press, for a reasonable amount? I got the Batson book, and man, apparently the prices for components were much cheaper in 1994. The recomended cylinder would be something close to a 5" bore, 8" stroke, double acting, tie rod cylinder. Anybody have any of those floating around? Or know of a good source for them? Or something they can be pilfered from which you might conceivably find at a junk yard? Spruce

Greetings gentleman I am the proud owner of this press Sorry for the lousy quality of the pictures. These are the first pictures after unloading the press and it was almost night... After all, I am an excited kid with a new toy! I got this press FOR FREE after one year negotiations with a friend. The press was outdoors neglected for several years and is lacking the counterweights. In return I am going to give him my much smaller press )%20so,%20for%20lack%20of%20space,%20tools%20that%20are%20not%20used%20are%20kept%20outdoors%20covered%20by%20water%20proof%20material.%20This%20flypress%20was%20just%20exposed%20to%20the%20elemen…

Well after a two minute job of loading it into my trailer with a forklift and half a day getting it out again without one, I now have a new 8 ton deep throat fly press in my workshop. Excuse my rather messy workshop, things were chucked around a bit to make room for her! I already have a long list of jobs for her, just need to make up some tooling now. On that note, what would one recommend for the 1" shank to hold the tooling. Would mild steel be ok? My thinking is it can easily be welded or replaced. I like t One of the tools I am looking to build is a little cropper/shear for cutting 1/4" round. I use a lot of this at set lengths so want to be able to rattle th…

Would something like this be any good for blacksmithing as a fly type press? Too small? Thoughts, ideas, and opinions welcome. www.vintageprojects/machine-shop/press-shop-2-ton.html Has anyone built a small flypress? from what I understand there is a lot of technical details that go into one, so I am wondering if anyone has built one that works well. Pictures and thoughts welcome.

I am making my 33 ton log splitter double as a press for doing pattern welding only. Using the railroad rails shown below. I have them each cut into 6" pieces. My question for more experienced is should I alter the working surface of the dies or leave as they are....I will only use for making billets. I wasn't sure if I should grind them to be flatter or leave with the slight rounding on one side as can be seen.

Request for photographs for new book I am in the process of writing a book about the hydraulic forging press. I have decided to add a gallery of items that were made using this type of press and the tooling required to do it. A high quality, high resolution, 300 dpi photograph with a plain light background is required. Please save it as a tiff file. Also shop photographs of your press with information in regards to tonnage, quick change tooling, etc., may also be useful. You will be given credit for all work and all photographs that are used with contact information in the book. I need this information by March 31. You may submit digital photos by emailing them to…

Let me just preface this post by saying that I will build a hydraulic if I want an actual press..... but after seeing this blueprint http://www.iforgeiron.com/page/index.html/_/blueprints/uri-hofi-series/bp1011-dimple-technique-r192 were Uri is using a tool to create a dimple in the vise, I was wondering if this isn't basicaly functioning as a small press? and if there might be more applications? maybe creating offsets for tongs, heading rivets, etc? This isn't an exercise necesarily in the pratical, but possible as I have a vise and not a press, and I want to make some tools this weekend : ) . Do any of you use tooling in your vises or have ideas for some that might wo…

Looking at buying this fly press, however it's too far away to justify a visit without committing to buying and the seller can't see any numbers that might relate to its size. So what do think? Looks a bit small to me after looking at some 8 ton Nortons and so on.

Anyone use a Hypercyl press to forge with? Just picked up one at auction. Uses air to move the cylinder until contact with work piece and then hydraulics kicks in with a maximum power stroke of 1/2" after contact. Very fast but only 15,000 lb max pressure. Would this be enough pressure for setting damascus? maybe a better question would be how many tons per square inch of work surface is required for damascus and general forging? Ben

I read a bunch about so many ways to hook up a whole lot of linkages to make a foot pedal control your hydraulic or air hammers and presses. What I don't see yet is using solenoids/electric to make an easier (seeming) foot control. Anyone done this or have a link showing it? Thanx

We just had two oaks cut down. Now working on the firewood. I got the hydraulic splitter out and suddenly it occured to me that it could be a powerful press. Not a power hammer but certainly a 21 ton press! Could be used with certain tooling as a powerful blacksmith tool? Ehh? I am sure I am not the first to think of it but this is the first I have heard of it. Anyone else? Better think safety first but the potential seems there.

I am collecting the components for a small ( 27 Ton) metal forming / forging press. I have an new condition unused 5 HP farm duty, 230 volt, 30 amp, Cap start / cap run,1800 RPM rated motor in my existing stock of parts that I would like to use. My problem is that the literature for the two stage hydraulic pumps from which I will be selecting have product data and power curves for pumps being driven only at 3600 RPM. If the formula, Torque = HP x 5252 / RPM , Is applied the result is that a 5HP, !800 RPM electric motor provides the same torque as 10 HP, 3600 RPM motor. This leads me to conclude that the smaller 5 HP, 1800 RPM motor can be used to drive pumps, with dir…

My brother whent to this lady's house to buy a tractor she had for sell, and well he was there she asked if he wanted to buy the triphammer. So he said that I might be interested. So I whent and looked at it, she said she know nothing about it, it was her husbands (so was the tractor), he left her with the kids and she is selling his stuff!LOL  She was going to send it to the crusher if I didn't want it! So I payed her a lttle more than scrap price for it $400. But it has a bad break on it. :( What I need to know is, is the break be fixed? and who made this hammer? Is it missing anything? If it is it may still be in her shed somewere, and I could ask her if sh…

Pictured is a home built bender I found on craigslist. I know little about hydraulics and hoped some of yall in the KNOW could help me out with this. I'm in the dark as to the capabilities of this machine. The owner / builder just used it for tube and pipe but thinks it could handle 1 1/2" solid round. -1 to 1 1/2 hp 220 v motor. (he couldn't see the label, built it 15 yrs ago - used "recently" ) -8 gal. per min vickers pump -2000 lb stainless braided hose -1 1/2" rod, 4" cyl - pin at end of rod is 2" , 2 pins on table are 1" -table top is 3/8" plate , yellow plate is 1/2" -it uses enerpac shoes All measurements were made without the tape measure ! I'm going to be using two 6" cylinders for my press, since once you go above a 6" bore the price seems to jump drastically. My two cylinders cost $295 each, versus well over $1000 for any 8" I could find (two 6" cylinders is equivalent to a single 8.5"). I hadn't done any research into synchronizing them because Randy is running his parallel cylinders without any control mechanism other than the mechanical coupling of having them both attached to the plate they are moving. When I was putting together my order at Bailey last week, the guy strongly recommended getting this 50/50 flow divider/combiner: http://baileynet.com/index.php?page=Search&id=14&srchsrc=SearchBo…

Goodmorning, I am in the process of building a Batson Press and I would like some thoughts on the best place to mount the mtr/pump combo. I tried to mount it on the frame and the noise was incredible. I have worked with other press assy and they were loud but not this loud. Would it be better to mount the mtr/pump assy on top of the oil tank on a plate or somehow away from the metal that magnifys the vibration noise? I tried to put some rubber mat under both the motor and the pump and it was still very annoying. I had ear protection on feel that it was excessive noise.
