So a buddy of mine had a lead on a old South Bend vertical mill… so I ended up being the new owner today. Scored the machine, all the end mills, the converter to step it down to 220 for 100.00 bucks. Pretty stoked. Now to clean it up, oil it and start learning how to use it.

Here is a photo of my old basement machine shop. There is a Wards metal lathe, Atlas metal shaper and Atlas milling machine. I taught myself to cut small gears on each machine and built the fixtures. Rack, spur, bevel, etc.... Workable gears, mind you, tolerable for my uses. Nothing NASA would approve of. I never could understand helical and herringbone's though so I never tried. I have lost my lust for tolerances and used the funds from the sale of them to invest in a shop and metal shaping equipment of a different sort..... I do still have a South Bend heavey 10 tho.

I just happened across this rather mind-blowing item: a 1/14 scale working model of a Bridgeport BRJ milling machine: It turns out that this is only one of the models Mr. Jordan has built over the years. Take a look at https://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/Jordan.htm for more of his work; just make sure you're sitting down first.

I have been looking for a mill and lost out on a Milrite. However I came across this. I did a search and couldn't find any info on it. Any opinions or suggestions would be helpful. I don't have a lot of space and all of my larger tools are on wheels. This appears to be an ideal mill. The sellers description says it is very similar to a Grizzly GS0731.

The title says it all, had this project in the works for a while now and it's finally gotten to the point that it looks like something so i figured now it's the time to post some pics and details. It's built pretty much entirely from scrap, save for fasteners. The column is 8" well casing, capped with an 8" square of 1/2" plate, then the head is blocked 6" higher for the head mount on 4" pipe. The head itself is a 1 1/4" pipe with a heavily machined T on the end for the spindle. The spindle is mounted in tapered roller bearings, threaded at the nose 1" x 10 tpi for fittings like boring heads and fly cutters. More details to follow. The drive is going to be …

I recently came across this funky horizontal mill. Yet another project. I did buy a collet set for it, but have yet to put power to the little guy. It is a " hand miller" in that the x axis is controlled through a rack gear rather than a screw. I have never used one of these and may just convert to screw feed (there are instructions in the manual and on several user groups online) no real question on it though if anyone has experience with one I would be curious to hear thoughts on the rack feed vs screw feed.

I picked up a jet jmd-18pfn the other day. I'm not a machinists jut a guy who doesn't want to use a drill press for milling. while this is older ,made in 2005. I don't think it was used for milling at all when I checked for run-out it was .0002. the table is dead square to the spindle. at least as far as I can tell. my question is will I be able to use this to flatten the top of a piece of rr track and whats the largest size face mill I should get. its has a 2 hp motor 230 power.

I just bought a tiny CNC mill DM2800 at auction that's pretty similar to the Tormach 440 in build quality and capacity (8x6x7 tool path). I'll probably have some retrofit work to do to this 1990's mill, I'm most likely going to put an Acorn control system in it. Anyways in the mean time to kill some time, what would you guys make with a tiny CNC mill? My immediate thoughts are to work my CNC fixturing skills up enough to where I can cut bevels into folding knifes and mess around with those for a while. I know it's kind of unrelated to this forum, but I think I would get a lot of use building robotics projects too. In addition to 3D printing, I think this little…

A machinist buddy of mine spotted a mill at auction and let me know so i could bid on it. I had very little money so i placed a 180$ max bid and walked away with a legun ft-1 knee mill 2hp i think? Quite rusty but serviceable. I only paid 115$ out the door moving the 2600lb beast was a trick but i got her home. Picture shows her partly torn down for cleaning the knee is a bit tight all the travels work spindle and quill are in great shape power feed works and so dose the dro with a bit of cleaning and a vsd to run the 3 phase i might get away with a 400$ mill du

Anybody out there cut tapered dovetails for their dies? I was thinking about buying a milling machine, but this is the only job I have for it at the moment. Grant mentioned a few years ago that a shaper was a good tool for that job,it would be a lot cheaper. Does a machinist know the best way to do this? Perhaps I shall just save up my pocket money and buy some dies.

Hello All; Tomorrow I'm getting this thing delivered (see picture below). What I know of it so far: 3000W Siemens motor, 380V (I've got a 380V in my workshop sooo) . Goes from 500 rpm to 4000 rpm; belt driven. 600 Kilo's (1200 pound). It's a swiss made thing; as the body on the back is marked "shaublin". It has an ISO 30 / SK 30 head; and it will be delivered with machine clamp; drilling head, and a box of milling cutters. There's integrated cooling (big box of cooling liquid in the foot.). I got it for fixing their network and a server (it helps to be an ICT engineer sometimes). I was up for a new column-drill; and I suppose …

I picked up this horizontal boring mill in a online auction out east along with some other things. It will be a nice audition for any repair I have or the ranch I live has once I get tooled up. Planning on using it to build a press or two with it as well. About 10' long by 4' wide with MT 5# taper spindle.

I am considering buying a Bolton ZX45 mill drill. Has anyone used one of these? This is a gear head mill drill which I think might be pretty good. Opinions on 2hp mill drills?

Hi yall thanks for feed back on iron workers. I am also looking to into getting a milling machine. I do light to medium fabrication in my shop, knife making and custom blacksmithing for the big houses next to the ski area here in Crested Butte Colorado. I don't have a huge budget and my shop is getting smaller and smaller every day. I have just been googling milling machines and getting your standard Jet and Grizzly brands. I have used a large Bridgeport in the old shop I worked in years ago and thats I know. I can't justify spend that kind of money though. Are the Jets and Grizzly's worth the money? I have a budget of about $4,000. Thanks for any feed back

I have a Cincinnati #1 1/2 universal horizontal mill, and from research would appear to be from 1900 to about 1910. The table feed is in-op, but otherwise seems to be in good shape. I started restoration today. Well, after speaking to a fellow at Cincinnati MAG who would have any documents etc for my mill, he said sorry they did not keep records very well that far back and they had nothing. I pulled the table off this morning, and found that a small bevel gear that brings the feed up to the screw drive is trashed. It revealed once removed and cleaned, that it had been welded and it looked like hand ground to try to make a tooth profile. About 1/4 of the gear teeth are g…

Hey guys. My uncle acquired this piece of machinery and I'm trying to figure out what exactly it is. It looks like a mill but I'm not sure what that little cutter blade is for. I have never used a mill before and am trying to figure out if it's something I want to try to buy from him. Any help on value and what it is actually for would be great. When he said mill, I was expecting a drill press chuck up there but don't see one.
