So what are hay buddens going for nowadays....400 for this and about 75lbs

I recently inherited my grandfather's Belknap anvil. The serial number is either 87420 or 37420, anyone out there with a copy of AIA that could shed some light on the history? My family is from Louisville and the "knap" is the only identifiable part of the original logo stamp, so I assume it was a licensed A&H from the early 1900's. The edges are still sharp and the striking face is dead flat, I never knew my grandfather so I feel extremely lucky to have this piece of history connecting us.

So I bought this nice old anvil yesterday ( only having looked at a blurry picture on the Dutch equivalent of Craigslist). Turned out to be quite the gem hidden underneath a pound of oily mud. So I came here to ask for some advice on Identifying and cleaning. Lets start of with the only thing I could read 1882, which I guess is the year of production. Found a hey budden 235 pound Anvil in my area asking price is 1600 have not looked at it in person but seems to be in good condition is this a fair price and is the tool steel separating from the wrought iron a concern when it’s tooled from the waist up?

I’m new to the site & recently acquired an anvil ( Hay Budden ) with the numbers 11972 1 . Am trying to find out anything I can about it’s age and or weight . Thanks

I would be interested the benefits of one brand to another. Or does it matter. Thus far I've been advised find a heavy piece of metal and use it for an anvil until I can get something better. Yet I've seen pics of anvil with attachments being used to bend hot iron during the forging process. It seems this thread has lots of anvils found and asking for help to identify them, but little on anvil usage. What are the different parts of the anvil used for, why are some shaped differently. If I spend the cash for an anvil, I'd like to know why I'm buying a particular type of anvil. Or is that in another section and my Newbieness is showing.

I couldn’t find any markings on the sample other than the numbers 871 Which may be just a production number or possibly there is a one before it which indicates the date. I’d like to see with this is worth like to sell it soon. I’m in the Pittsburgh PA area any feedback would be great

My husband brought home an old anvil tonight that he got cleaning out an old barn for a friend. I did a rubbing & found that the trademark is Trenton. I know nothing about these heavy pieces of steel but I am interested in learning. At the base on the left side it seems to have a casting of "Z" 150 or "Z" 159. To the right of that is "A" 41313. I am assuming the 150/159 is the weight and that the other casting is possibly a serial number. Any insight that you can give us new endeavor will be greatly appreciated.

I have just purchased a 295lb anvil, stamped Ajax JH Ashdown Winnipeg 28496 I have read up on the history of JH Ashdown Hardware and Tinsmith but am wondering if there is anyone out there with the knowhow to date this anvil by the number stamped on it? Appreciate any insight!!

This anvil belonged to my great great grandfather and has been in our family since approximately the 1930’s. He was a blacksmith by trade. My father grew up on a farm in austell, ga with a working blacksmith shop that we have retained many of his tools. My dad recently started trying to find the origin of this anvil and I wanted to see if some of the experts on this site could lend a hand. It weights 78.2 lbs, on one side has the numbers 0, 2 or 3, 25 or 35, On the other it appears to read the London Sheffield. Any help would be appreciated

I found this anvil in an old barn and was wondering if you guys could tell me what brand it is and if it is worth anything. Here are some pics And it seems to have a steel face and possibly a cast iron base.

I am not a blacksmith, but I have a Trenton anvil that came from my Grandfather's farm. Below the Trenton logo it says 91, which I assume is the weight. The serial number is A6692, and located to the far edge left of the number is an "S". Is there a resource that would tell me the approximate age?

It was made for Bullock out of Chicago. Got this part of a collection doesn’t look like it had Been used and abused on it minus the 1 chip on the heel it’s pretty much perfect.

I picked this anvil up in Wyoming for $100 it's pretty beat up but I figured it was worth it. I cleaned it up with a wire wheel. I think it might be a soderfors? It rings like a bell and has 85+% rebound. I can't find anothing that tells me when it was made.

Wondering if anyone could help me age my Wilkinson anvil. Just picked it up a week ago, got it cleaned up today. 180lbs, 4” face. Wilkinsons and crossed canons are clearly visible. On the back bottom it looks like either “135” or “185” is stamped in it. On the back the only visible numbers of the hundred weight would be the last of the three which is “17”. I weighed it and it is 180lbs.

Hi guys , I found an anvil that was used in automobile shop , it has a few gashes from cutting torch But otherwise useble . Can anyone age for me 139315 serial# 120lbs .I know a good welder and was going to have him touch up cuts in face . Thank you Glenn

I am preparing to purchase this Anvil, and need some help identifying it. It appears to be a Trenton, the left foot has a Z116 and the right foot appears to have A31201. Any idea on the date of manufacture and the current value? I am in Kansas City, MO. From what I have been reading it appears to be a 1901 Trenton, 116 lbs. Thanks

This is a 300# Anvil with only the weight markings. Does anyone reconize it as a peter wright? thx John

I have had this for a while but could not find any info on it. Its 250lbs and flat on the top. A fella saw it and said he thought it was an Anvil used by the Railroads, anyone have an idea on this? Thx John

Guys I have stripped all the old paint off my Peter Wright anvil and have found the right weight although the middle number is illegible 2 _ 20 , what was interesting was S S was stamped onto both sides on the bottom rail? Any ideas? Thanks
