I was having trouble with the bottom die of my hammer getting chewed up from scale getting trapped under swages . The scale is very hard and abrasive and was being pounded hard under the swage in use, leaving the face of the bottom die pitted . My solution was to fabricate a cover for the bottom die from some 3/3'' flat bar and 1/2'' plate . One of the bars on the side was left long to act as a handle and the edge left sharp as a convenient edge to scrape scale off the hot bar before placing it in the swage. The cover is a loose fit so it's easy to place over the die and remove it when the swaging operation is done. Since the cover is mild steel it also dou…

does anybody have any idea as to what make of hammer this is? No markings I can see. it has the interesting feature of having two slide plates, one mounted at the spring pivot and one on the ram , I guess to make the action between spring and ram linear? I would be interested in finding out what speed it should be run at as I have bought it as a fixer upper..... any info would be good

So I'm in the process of changing my 30wt oil out for 10wt oil in my 33lb anyang and am just letting the oiler drip on full blast to empty it. Before I go chipping all the paint off the oilers bottom in search of a drain, Is there a set screw on the bottom of these oilers to quickly drain all the oil?

Our SM50 seems to have quit flowing oil. I know I'm getting air pressure to the oil tank, but the oil doesn't appear to be flowing into the machine. I'm not sure if the oil adjustment valve is gunked up or what. I've read that there's a check valve inside the valve, and I'm thinking that could be stuck? I'm not sure. Anyone experience any kinds of issues like this? I've emailed Sahinler but they're incredibly slow to respond and haven't been of any help so far. Any recommendations on where to start with this would be great. I don't want to burn my machine up. Thanks!!!

  7. I've been posting this in a couple other places, but thought I'd post the whole thing over here too as it's a real hammer crowd and I could always use more input! The thread starts back a month ago in early June... Well, I had enough of trying to track down hammers, afford them, dicker over price, lose deals from distance and competition... so I contacted my friend Larry Langdon and sure enough, he had a good project hammer to sell me.It's a #9 Beaudry Champion, the slack belt type, the 300 lb. model. It needs dies and a sow block. Overall it's not too badly worn but has a good surface rust coat from sitting idle in a warehouse in Seattle for decades. Larry thre…

Going to build a 40 pound Kinyon style hammer. Will my 6 inch slab be ok without reinforcement? I think I will put some kind of rubber or wood insulator under it. I'm a hobbyist and this hammer won't see a lot of heavy work. I do have a six to one ratio on the hammer and anvil.I have a two and one half by ten inch cylinder, reckon a five horse compressor will be sufficient? Gary.

When I bought my Kuhn KO back around 1992 I installed it on a hard rubber base pad recommended by the MFG. This pad has now aged out and is crumbling and needs to be replaced. What is currently considered to be the best material and source of this pad replacement ?

Hi all new here so unsure of protocol ! i read lots of pieces about two man sledge hammers asking for any info. ive used one , lol. am almost 70 yo now but back in early 20s i had occasion to work on a long defunked Arkrites mill in Derbyshire, was working on coal boilers and noticed the 2 man sledge on the coal pile, it wasnt like the hex shaped head in the pics , head was very Egg shaped and i estimate head to have been approx 30-35lb.We tried it and although i had a donkey strength labourer, it was hard to weald, we never really knew its purpose but from head shape and its location found we deduced it had been used to smash coal lumps , if i …

  11. Hi. I've recently installed my Alldays & Onion 1cwt, I'm having trouble with the treadle, it's a bit stiff going down but can still forge with it, it's when it goes to return it doesn't want to without me aiding it. it has been sitting around for over a year and I've left the hammer running for over an hr to warm it up. Just wondering if it's a common thing or do I have to take it apart to fix. thanks Tom.

I’ve got my new to me 100lb little giant mounted and I’m having some issues. If tried searching for these problems using google and iforgeiron bit haven’t had much luck. I plan on purchasing one of the dvds in adjusting these but buying the hammer wiped out the smithing fund. This hammer doesn’t seem to be hitting very hard. I’ve read that I need 2” between the dies for the most power but I can’t figure out how exactly to do that. If I raise the collar up on the pitman it doesn’t hit at all. Sometimes the clutch doesn’t disengage and it will keep hitting although not hard. It’s got additional springs connected to the clutch fork so I don’t think it’s a spring issue. The…

Hello all, have been blacksmithing a while, and want to build an air hammer. Spent a lot of time looking online and like the Kinyon air hammer. Noticed there are many refinements made over the years and would like to know whose plans I should buy. I'm thinking maybe a small hammer, I have a 5horse compressor. Thanks for your time, Gary

Hi all, I am in the process of rebuilding my Ajax Spring hammer. basically the same thing as a Appalachian hammer but industrial built and very heavy. Its a 100 pound Ram on the hammer and im wondering what Horsepower it would need to run properly. Ive scrounged everywhere I could for a clue but dont read czech or german so coming to dead ends. I have a 3 HP 1750 RPM motor but dont know if it will be sufficient or would be pushing the motor too hard. if anyone knows it would be a real help, even if someone with a 100 pound Bradley or Beaudry Strap or helve hammer could let me know as thats probably the most comparable to my hammer.

Ok, so I have a buddy with everything in the world, metal. I am building an Appalachian hammer. He has some kind of solid axle, 4.5" round, by 60" or so long. Math says that a 36" piece weighs 162 pounds. This by itself isn't enough for a 25 pound head, correct? Next, he has a mud pump sleeve, easily 150 pounds, about 20" long with a 5 or 5.5" bore down the middle. We're thinking we could use some pipe to shim the gap, weld it all together, and get close to 300 pounds. The solid axle would go straight from the dies to the base plate, with the sleeve on the bottom for extra mass. Is this a good idea? The 4.5" solid round is the biggest solid we could …

  18. OK, so I went to my friend's epic scrap pile and he has 98% of everything I'll need for an Appalachian style hammer. I may shoot for build-along pics as I go, but for now I have some specific questions about materials selection. He's got so much to choose from! First question... Let's say I have the choice between a dozen different sizes of leaf springs. Shooting for a 300 pound anvil and 25-30 pound head. Should I look for a shorter set, 36-40" or so, to minimize the footprint? Or, would a longer set, 60" or so, have better performance? Next, should I look for a heavier set, so they functioned more like a solid bar, or for a softer set, so that I …

  19. So I am lucky to have a machinist brother, and this weekend he had time to help me with this project. I am making japanese style bladesmithing dies for my appropriately sized hammer. Going with a 2" round face. Started off with a block of 4140 I bought from a reputable steel supplier in my area. From this we took measurements from my original die, found the angle of the dovetail with a very expensive Intercomp angle finder, and began the dovetails. So far so good. Will be working on the face today, and then sometime this week, mill out the dovetail for the much larger bottom die. Also tried fitting the die in the hammer using the same keys, and it …

I raised my hammers up on timber risers , both to act as a cushion between the frame and anvil and the concrete foundation block as well as getting them up to a more comfortable working height. I used pressure treated douglas fir glulam beams glued and through bolted for the risers. These were cut to closely follow the profile of the hammer base and were banded with a piece of 1/8'' flat bar to protect the edge of the wood. Raising the hammer made it necessary to lower the treadle which I did with an extension with 3/16'' flat foot plates located both in front of the dies as well as for approaching the dies lengthwise from the side. This extension allows m…

  22. I have been looking at two different design power hammer builds and would be very appreciative of any pros and cons or the two different hammers, if anyone has built or used either or both.

  23. Dear all, looking for an affordable proportional foot switch like the one below (but less expensive). Using now a momentary 2/5 foot valve which only allow a ON/OFF situation and this is very annoying. At the moment I put an extra valve to reduce the air escape, to control at least the cylinder stroke. Did you know any web shop or Ebay supplier hoe also delivers in Western Europe on decent prices. Thank you very much in advance.

  24. Hay guys, so I've kinda fabricated myself into a bit of a corner with my new toy. Just finished building myself a new style kinyon power hammer with a 125# head that's getting its paint job at the moment. I'll put a pic below of its unpainted self. My issue is the floor of my shop. The whole hammer weighs around 1400# according to my CAD sofware and was walking around while i was testing it out, and making a pair of damascus knives I had to rush for Christmas gifts. The obvious solution is to bolt it down which I intended to do. But now that the time for it has come I'm not so sure I want to, or can. The typical solution from what I've read is to cut a hole in the floor a…

Hello from a new guy. I have a Schuyler Common Sense #2 Gunning Model power hammer that is in pretty rough shape. My goal is to restore it to working condition. My only real concern is the weld "repair" someone made on it. I haven't found much information on this hammer, yet. Does anyone know where I might be able to get some information on this i.e. die dimension and such. Thanks in advance.
