Last ABANA conference I spoke with Pat from the CMA and he invited me down to teach a class.. I threw out a few ideas, and we landed on Socketed timber framing chisels.. So April 2025 I headed down. What a great facility.. If you guys have a chance to go.. GO. Like any place I go there was some funk with equipment but it all worked out.. 4 students signed up but sadly one guy had to leave after the first day. Family emergency. 1 new person with no experience, 1 person with about 10 years and another person with about 6. The new person got his fire management down right away and had forge welds day 1.. The others had experience,…

QuadState 2025 will be held at the Miami County Fairgrounds in Troy, Ohio the last weekend in September. The official programming is on Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th, but people always show up early to socialize and to set up their tailgate sales. Download program brochure HERE. This will be my first Q-S since 2021, and my bin of tailgate-able material is overflowing. See you there!

I was fortunate enough to be asked to demonstrate at the IBA conference this past June. If you ever have a chance to go it's an amazing event with amazing people. Some of my favorite people to hang with and see what they have going on.. Wish now I had taken more photos of the forgings in the display building.. Lots of amazing work.. The group of people at this conference are also the people at nearly every event that setup camp and forge nearly all night long. Over the course of 5 days I managed a whopping 15hrs of sleep.. Here is Noah H. and up and coming star.. Forged out a fireplace poker for Friday night demo.. stellar.. Rob H. at…

Anyone else from here going? Short notice but this is the first time in years that I've managed to remember to register before it's over. Went a bunch of times as a kid, only lived 15 minutes away. Sounds like an excellent demonstrator this year. Matt.

This November I'll be registering George Mason University's first blacksmithing and cutlers club but I've been having trouble finding a place to set up on campus. Are there any very local smiths near the university that would be open to making arrangements for 5-10 students to visit and do some classes ran by me in the future? I think we'd be ready to get started several months from now.

I am moving to Ft. Collins, CO for school and I am not sure if I'll be able to find housing with a shop/garage to put my stuff in. Is there a group that meets or someone in the area who's space I can rent/use? I have the basics required to forge, but if I don't need to cart all of it with me and can meet up with some other like-minded folk that might be the easiest thing to do. A google search mostly just turns up classes I can take. Thanks guys.

My wife and I were planning to attend this year (first time), and I was looking at the registration and they don't list the cost for members. An ABANA membership costs $90/year, so I'm trying to see if it's worth it to join to get the member discount for the conference. Does anyone know the member price for the conference? Any other comments or advice regarding attending the conference would be appreciated. The only other event we've attended has been SOFA's Quadstate, which we've enjoyed, although it took us several years to realize that if we wanted to actually buy anything, we needed to show up 3 days before the event officially starts or it would all be…

Past weekend taught a beginner blacksmith forge welding class.. Had 2 with experience and 6 students completely new at the forge and anvil. Had them forge welding day 1 with a treble herb hook ( long tapers, using the hardie for cutting and notching, Long taper sq, oct, round, bend and weld). A very tough first project but gives me a real sense of whats possible. The long tapers and SOR were awesome. Day 2 was finish up herb hooks and chain welding. Day 3 I gave them 4 options.. blacksmith twist poker, spoon, Heart trivet or round trivet. 5 people chose poker and 3 chose spoon.. Huge success with plenty of time forge welding..…

I am travelling to France in September, and I was wondering if there are any smiths here who live in the Bordeaux or Périgueux region. It might be fun to visit a forge while I'm there. Do you know someone? - Arthur

Hello, I really appreciate this forum. I am looking to find a school/forge or even a one on one opportunity with an experienced Blacksmith in Ventura County or Santa Barbara area. I work full time but can be flexible if it's closer by. I know Adam's Forge is in Glendale area and they are fantastic, but if I could find anything closer it be great. Any suggestions. Thank you in advance. John
