Hey guys, I've been asked to "get the word out on the internet" about the Calgary Blacksmith Club. Several of the members have been involved since the early 90s and are professional Smiths. There are also several noobs (like me), making for a nice mix. This month's meeting will be at Pioneer Acres just outside Irracana (about 35 minutes from the North end of Calgary). The Blacksmith shop at PA is set up as historical as possible with coal forges, lineshaft equipment and 100s of antique tools. Even without the forges going, its a very neat shop, but, we typically get some time on the anvils building skills and sharing techniques before wrapping up around 2PM. If …

Introducing the 'Timber Tools & Artisan Shows' coming in 2019 to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra! This new show format aims to bring artisan crafts, rare trade & traditional skills and skilled makers skills together to inspire our communities. I'm looking to host an evening forge-in of sorts for a network of folks I've recently met, (non blacksmiths), more of a social event rather than a lesson, but I'd definitely still be watching over to guide. I think I could handle 6 folks at a time working in pairs so folks are helping each other out and not working alone. Each "forge=in" would probably last 3 hours, followed by a BBQ. My initial thought is I should get everyone making very slightly decorative chain links, (something just a little more interesting than a standard link, NOT forge welded), then as each working pair's pile grows, we start to link them up into a symbolic chain. The next class of 6 folks o…

I've been looking through classes and workshops available from various different schools and although I've seen many things I'd like to do, I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. Does anyone have a recommendation for a four-five day class on forge welding that is east of the Mississippi? Thanks ahead!

Columbia Fire and Iron held a hammer-in this weekend at the Morgan Jade Ironworks in Spokane, Wa. Got a very friendly tour of his shop and watched some newbies "getting the hang" of hot steel. Love seeing the gospel spread.

Hello all. I know we have some members in Western PA and the surrounding areas. I am headed west on Friday for annual Steelhead (steelhead for an aspiring blacksmith, go figure) fishing trip. Hoping to limit out early everyday and maybe have some time for a quick visit, BS session over adult beverages, tips tricks or whatever. Not at all sure how much free time I will have but who knows. Regards

I've been working with the great folks at SOFA to try and coordinate a tire-hammer workshop, led by Clay Spencer. It is tenatively planned to occur mid-April of next year. The cost would be approx. $1500 and several days of work to leave with a finished tire hammer/power hammer. A 50% deposit would be due in advance. This would be held at the SOFA facility in Troy, OH (where Quadstate is held). Details are still being worked out and are thus subject to change, but we are trying to gauge interest. If you would be interested in attending, and would have the financial means to do so, send me a PM with your name and email address and we will keep you in the loop. Details will…

Hi, I used to post here a lot, moved a few months back to Oak Harbor, Washington on Whidbey Island. There's a couple of groups in state, but Spokane is too far, shoot even the one south of Seattle is a bit iffy until I get my car/finances back in better shape. Love to play given the opportunity. I'm not quite starting over at scratch, but most of my tools are stuck in a storage unit in Georgia, and no money to go back for them for awhile. My best anvils, the post vises, blower, all but five or six tongs, my hot cuts/cold cuts, punches, drifts, swages, swage block, rivet tools, nail header, brushes, mallets, twisting wrenches, scroll forms, stock...you get the idea. S…

I'm sorry to be so late mentioning this but next weekend, 06/16/18, Saturday & Sunday is the second annual hammer in Camp out at the Matanuska River Camp ground in Palmer just past the cemetary on the Old Glenn. There are 5 spaces reserved now but there are more open close by. We had a ball last year even though it rained and it's supposed to be sunny this time. come on out, play in the fire, swap lies and . . .oh whatever. Frosty The Lucky.

Hey anyone! I'm trekking up north to Portland, Maine in a week (6/19-25) and I'd really like to find some other blacksmiths and crafters to meet and hang around with! Also, like most I'm sure, I'm on the hunt for any tongs, hammers, or punches I can get my hands on. In an ideal world I'd really like to be driving back home with a small anvil as well. If anyone has any interest, leads, or ideas, I'd really appreciate them ~laurel

Question for the group mind out there, I am largely a self-taught smith, couple weekend classes here and there. I would classify myself as an intermediate beginner. I am looking to take a weeklong intensive course at one of the many schools around the country. I will be flying in from the west coast, renting a car and driving to the school. I think some have on site dormitories, and all probably provide lodging recommendations. Who has taken what, where, and how have your experiences been? I think the immersive experience of such a class, combined with finally having a home shop to help lock in the techniques once I get back will really move my skil…
