  1. Hello everyone, I join you having never had the opportunity to actually move metal, but hopefully this weekend I will get to change that. I have been fascinated with the art ever since I was a young child, and I watched the blacksmiths at the Tulsa State Fair back in the early 90s. In the years that followed, I never made the time to learn even when my mother encouraged me to take a class or find a mentor. Now at 30 years old I am finally setting aside the time to learn. I am lucky that I have an active club in my area and on this forum, the Saltfork Craftsmen based here in Oklahoma. This weekend I am joining them for one of their regional meetings and I hope I will get a chance to learn from those that are there. I look forward to learning the craft and being a positive member of the community. Thanks for reading! Let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.
  2. Hey folks, Brad here, from near Stratford, Oklahoma. I'm retired from 25 years in the US Army, Infantry, Paratrooper mostly in the 82nd Airborne Division.... After all that time falling out of airplanes I'm kinda banged up, but our youngest children are twin 11 year old boys, so they keep me hopping! My wife and I were introduced to Forged in Fire by a nephew of mine, and have become junkies for it, and combined with my lifelong enjoyment of building things, it's been an easy step for me to start building a forge and set up a place to work. We live on a few acres in the country, and I have two shops, two sheds and a corral, so space isn't a problem... :^) Haven't banged on metal for 35 years or so, but I'm looking forward to getting going. Thanks in advance for the help I know I'll receive here. Brad Hedges
  3. Hey guys I've been reading the forum as a guest for a while and decided to finally join. I'm pretty new to smithing, I've done a fair bit of research but I have maybe 10 hours of actual smithing time under my belt. My current setup consists of a cast iron bowl filled with clay soil and a shop vac for air, a small harbor freight anvil on a stump, a cross peen hammer, a ball peen hammer, and some channel locks for tongs. I have a ton of scrap metal to play with. I have been using charcoal but I just got some coal locally I've gotten to fire up recently. The recent coal firing has tought me I need a better forge so I think I'm going to build a better(hopefully) jabod soon that won't self destruct in one firing. Here's a few pictures of my setup by the way
  4. Found this item in the Ada area. Sadly out of my reach at this time. Though someone on there might need/find a use for it. Link removed
  5. Howdy all, I'm new, trying to get into bladesmithing and blacksmithing, if anyone local sees this, I'd be more than happy to talk.
