Quad State 2025

Featured Replies

QuadState 2025 will be held at the Miami County Fairgrounds in Troy, Ohio the last weekend in September. The official programming is on Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th, but people always show up early to socialize and to set up their tailgate sales.

Download program brochure HERE.

This will be my first Q-S since 2021, and my bin of tailgate-able material is overflowing. See you there!

I am planning on to attend this year.

Can anyone recommend nearby accommodations? I dont think the wife is up for tent camping.

I may bring my Fisher chain vise in hopes of selling it or better yet, trading for a 200# fisher anvil.

I hope to see all of you there :-)

Troy is the Miami County seat, so there are a number of hotels and motels in fairly easy distance. I’ll be staying in the Holiday Inn Express, which is about 5-10 minutes away.

Thanks John, I am looking forward to saying hi in person.

Also looking forward to touring part of the country I have never been to. Other than a trip to Florida many years ago, I have never been east of Denver

Just keep your foot off the brake on the way down from the Rockies, and you should be able to coast all the way to Ohio.

Rojo, you are coming to my neck of the woods. I live about 25-30mins South of Troy.

There are a few hotels in or near there that are pretty good. Stay away from hotel 6 or any that cost less than $100 a night. Pretty much those are not places you want to be at night.

If you or the wife are into wool and yarn the Wool Gathering is the weekend before Quadstate in Yellow Springs at Youngs Dairy (try the black raspberry ice cream) , just about 30 mins South of Troy as well. If you have time i would also suggest a visit to the Wright Pat AFB museum of aviation. People come from all over the world for it.

Anyway hope our paths cross as well.

Thanks Billy, good advice, and yes my wife quilts and crochets and would really like that.

The museum sounds good as well, we have a very large one here in Tucson, the Pima Air and Space Museum and I go quite often (my brother is a docent). I have actually touched 3 different SR71’s and would like to add a fourth :-)

If you want to swing a little north and a little farther east, you can visit my wife's yarn shop in Oberlin!

A word about what to expect weather wise. No idea. That will have to come about a week before. For example it was in the mid to upper 90's last weekend, it is 73F out right now. This part of the country the weather gets really unpredictable this time of year.

I am looking forward to some eastern weather, we are going to spend a few days in Gatlinburg on the way up and can't wait so see some parks and woods.

Anyone else planning to attend?

An announcement from SOFA:

Slight change to the Quadstate 2025 lineup. Richard Sullivan is unable to make it to the event this weekend. Mark Sperry & Broadus Thompson from the Anderson Blacksmith Shop at Colonial Williamsburg will be filling in for him

The chili cook off moved up this year, and is Saturday Sept 27 rather than in October, since my venison chili got first place the past year and second the year before that i kinda have to be there to defend my title

I was just looking at the site. The pic they have up, there is a guy on the left side. Correct me if i am mistaken but is that the late Mr. Thomas Powers?

Steve, good luck. Even if i do not get a taste you will get my vote.

Yeah i will provably be there, not like i can do much else being broken at the moment.

This guy?

No, that's Kim Thomas of Seville, OH. Really good traditional smith, who's done a lot of restoration on various Samuel Yellin works. Nice guy, and he's got some good videos on his YouTube channel.

(Besides, would Thomas Powers be seen in a brimless black hat rather than his famous red slouch hat? I mean, really!)

Don't forget the lederhosen and Hawaiian shirt! Dang, I'm blanking on what he called a Hawaiin shirt, it was straight out of "Glory Road" by R.A. Heinlein.

Frosty The Lucky.

Thanks for the weather update. We don't get in until later Friday but look forward to a sunny Saturday.

I am really looking forward to the tail gating section.

Aloha, I think.

I remember, Thomas wore an "Aloha" shirt, Lederhosen and a red slouch hat. Remembered not long after I made my last post but wanted confirmation on Rufo's hat and plume. Sooooo I've been skimming through Glory Road looking for a description of Rufo but skimming one of my favorite stories goes a lot slower than helps here.

Thomas and I both loved Heinlein and used to play puns with quotes from different novels, etc. The first pic he posted of Quad State was of him in lederhosen, aloha shirt and plumed cap. I really miss him.

Absent companions.

Bringing up Thomas gives me warm feelings, he was always good at calling out my dyslexia screw ups when i got terms messed up, i think he enjoyed doing it, and i always teased him about the antlers on his floppy hat

From the day we met:

(FYI, that hat has since worn out and been retired; if anyone is looking for me this weekend, I’ll be wearing its replacement:

Ok thanks, i forgot about the hat. I only had the pleasure of meeting him face to face once and that was at Quadstate as i was leaving to go pick up the wife from work. Oh and he was not wearing the shirt and lederhosen, he told me that it was to chilly that day to wear.

I was so looking forward to looking for Thomas's hat. Deb and I had the trip planned, she wanted to go to Wool Gathering and I was going to hit Quad State. I figured Thomas and I'd get the chance to swap tall tales and puns at both, being steel wool couples.

We got to talk on the phone maybe a week before he crossed the rainbow bridge. One of his Minions, Thom looked me up because he was asking for me. It was bitter sweet, he was very much at peace, looking forward to the end of the decline. I accused him of going to extreme measures to avoid my visit. He laughed but couldn't come up with a rejoinder. Laughed about that too. Kathy took the phone saying Thomas was tiring and falling asleep, she thanked me and I told her they all were in my prayers and thanked her for the chance to speak with him.

The whole conversation lasted less than 15 minutes, most with Kathy and Thom.

Still, we got some personal contact, too little but a true honor and privilege.

Thom kept me updated till he passed and funny thing Thom was from Sylmar, my old neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. He said that wasn't an unusual thing if you associated with Thomas.

Darn, now I'm all maudlin.

Frosty The Lucky.

Been skimming "Glory Road" and found the line. Oscar was getting outfitted and selecting clothing. Star was asking Rufo if he'd brought clothes for Oscar to select from and Oscar said, "What's wrong with wearing lederhosen with an aloha shirt?" It was their first day in the new dimension/world/? (You'd have to ask Mr. Heinlein, I'm sure he'd give you as interesting an answer as Thomas Powers would.) He'd just picked his bow and Lady Vivimus.

Once I'm finished with this audio book series I'm going to have to load my Heinlein stories. I'll be listening to that "library" for a while.

Frosty The Lucky.

Got in late but we walked around a bit and saw the gallery items, some real talent there for sure.

Also a peek at the tail gating and I have to say it is a bit overwhelming -the amount of sellers and variety of stuff for sale is crazy!.

Looking forward to tomorrow but sorry that I don't have my truck.
