Gas Forges

Thought I would share some pics of my new Cayenne Forge. Recieved the Cayenne a few days ago. It was packed in excellent condition with incredible care. All things wrapped individually with bubble wrap, cardboard and tons of peanuts. It came in two huge boxes. Really impressive. The welds are really nice and the forge is incredibly stout. It's a fairly good size unit and at max psi ~20 it puts out an insane amount of heat . Even at low PSI this thing really pushes out incredible heat. Hi all, this is more a question for Frosty, being that I'm using his burner design for my first gasser (and I didn't even have to pump him for info! . My question is this: how far does the nozzle of the burner protrude into the forge? Should it be even with the inside refractory material, pulled out slightly, or just adjust the depth for best burn? BTW, the forge is being built out of a R134a refrigerant cylinder and it's going to have a single, 3/4" burner, insulated with kaowool/itc-100 (or equivalent).

Hey all, I'm building my first propane forge. I am wondering how high the bottom of your forge is from the floor? I'm talking about the inside, where you put your metal, or your material rest height if you suspend your material. How far does your attached material rest extend out (min/max for adjustable ones)? If your material rest sets on the floor, then it is not attached, but please say so and include your typical range of positions, and the type of stock you are usually using. I understand that everybody forges different size materials, and some people like having attached handles and others like using tongs to hold all their work. Feel free to mention what …

Well, I've been visiting websites for years wanting to setup a forge and start pounding some metal . Now that I actually can, and have a basically limitless supply of metal on hand for free or minimal I want to start designing a forge and building it. Now, I've just recently started a new job at a steel mill, They use natural gas for everything, from the reheat furnace to the cutting torches, So I know it can easily get hot enough to work steel with, Any particular advantages between natural gas and propane? I saw a used Mankel three burner forge yesterday that was for sale. $750.00 I know nothing about Mankel forges. It was open on three sides with a small blower. Having only started in blacksmithing one year ago, I am looking for a good propane forge, but wonder if it is more forge than I need and a three burner will surely suck up the propane. I'm sure it will get metal hot fast. Any info on mankel forges would help.

I have a special-cut firebrick for my gas forge but when I was futzing with some doors i'm welding on it came down and broke the small brick. They are fragile/brittle when thin. Anyway, can I glue it back together or is it just funeral time.... :confused:

i have a two burner gas forge and i have two beautiful blue flames from my burners i run my propane pressure at 9 and the best I can get is 1/2" round stock to yellow no matter how long i let it soak it will not get to white hot. So the pressure seams high to me but orange is all i can get if i take it down to 5. I put two more fire brick in front of the large opening to keep more heat in but that didn't help. any ideas I'm still trying to figure out pictures on here but once i get it I'll be sending out a few to show what mine looks like running. thanks Tater

Have a three burner gas forge and a new 24x22 shop. Question is how to vent a gas forge with a front, back and side openings...Seldom use the side door but both the front and back have to be open when using 2 or 3 burners to keep the back pressure down......Not very imaginative but thinking about just mounting an exhaust fan in the wall behind the forge...Open to all ideas,,,thx

Greetings, As I am new to iron working please excuse this post if this topic has already been covered. I recently was introduced to the production of "wood gas" which is a syn gas or producer gas. It is essentially CO (carbon monoxide). When you see wood burning you are actually seeing the CO that is coming out of the wood igniting, giving you the flame. It is a very simple gas to produce and can be made from any biomass from wood, wood chips, saw dust, paper, cardboard, leaves, grass clippings, etc. The heat output from the gas varies with the amount of oxygen available and can be increased with a blower, much like adding oxygen to coke, charcoal, coal or wood.…

I am trying to make a gas burner like the one in BP0192. I have everything, as near as I can tell, like in the blueprint except for 2 things: 1. The hole in the cap is from a #60 drill bit and I'm not entirely sure if the hole is strait and completely burr free. 2. I did not fuller the 1''x12'' iron pipe. If I light it the gas almost immediately starts to burn the reverse of what you want and it makes a lovely backfiring noise. If I use a 1''x6'' pipe it will burn ok (seems to be a bit blue green flame) but makes a bit of a light put-put-put/backfiring noise. And probably not relevant: If I use a bushing and a 3/4''x6'' pipe I can get a light flame going but it wil…

So I am in the process of buying a house with a large 2 1/2 car garage and was thinking of using a gas forge. I was going to start with a single burner and then go to a double if I feel the need for more heat, but I was curious what proper ventilation would be for one of these in a closed shop? I bought a small anvil already, a hay budden 70-75 pound (did a 3 hours (back and forth) trip and the anvil costed me 150$). I'm new here and hopefully someone can help me. I recently found a second hand propane farriers forge but its missing a couple bricks. Does anyone know of a place that sells them? Was hopeing to find some local, but not much luck. Like to find a place with cheap shipping, since their coming to Alaska. Second question: Is there a thread on here for swappin or sellin? Hello--this is my first one here. I have a few questions about my new knife-ish forge in the making. The planned shell is stainless steel (kitchen trash can). The outside dimensions are 24" x 12"--going with 2" insulation (refractory?...still getting used to the language) that leaves me with 20/22" length and 8" diameter or 1000 cu/in to 1100 cu/in to bring inside to forging temps. This length requires at least 2 burners (3?), but what size (1" required or will 3/4" work?) and what type and spacing distance? My other questions are whether the shell is fundamentally up to the task and what's the best way to door, close or cap this off (thinking original lid on one end and …

Can anyone help me ? What is the difference in running costs for a gas and a coal forge ? I am moving into a new building and thinking of building a gas forge instead of a coal forge . I would appreciate all the advice I can get.

I meant to post a pic of my forge when people were asking about ceramic chip forges before. Ceramic forges are excellent for someone who has just a few hours a month to get hammering. I have 2, one that I'd say is about 40 years old based on the blower and this one that I bought from a school that was made in 1983. When I got it all I had to do was connect the gas and I was forging in 10 minutes.

How many people here use flashback arrestors in line with their propane tanks on their gas forge? I use them on my oxy/acet setup. I don't know how well they work because i've never had an incident but I suppose that is part of the point of safety equipment. :rolleyes:

i grabbed the ts839, thinking it might work best out of what i saw.. i have access to the ts1500, ts4000, and perhaps the ts3000.. i havent seeen the jth7 arround.. anyone worked with the ts839? can i expect it to work okay for a two brick forge?

I'm wanting to get into more furniture (dining room tables etc) and need to be able to heat up and bend larger stock. I currently have a blown 2 burner pipe forge, and a blown industrial johnson 133 forge (haven't got it running in the new shop yet need to convert from N.G to propane) but even with these 2 forges I still need another more flexible brick pile/clamshell style forge for bending heavy stock and for items allready bent into odd shapes that won't fit in the pipe forge. I've built a small forge with the ceramic blanket type insulation and I want to build something new. I have become confused by what I've found on the web about Duraboard insulation so I thought I would just ask a few questions. Does one inch Duraboard insulate as well as two inches of ceramic blanket? If Duraboard doesn't insulate as well as two inches of blanket do you recomend one layer of blanket then a layer of board or just two layers of board? Will the Duraboard deform (sag) if used as a flat roof for a 9x13 inch (inside dimension) forge? Hope the questions aren't to common, I've just never had my hands on the stuff.
