Metal Sculpture & Carvings

Discussion on metal crafting for a unique and artistic experience.

  1. This is a concrete bench top that I made the steel edge band for, It has been polished with a diamond floor polishing machine. The curved section is the bench support and is being polished as well

Certainly not a new concept design but it was a fun way to use up a little bit of chain and the bride is happy...now she wants a half dozen more.

I went out to the shop this morning thinking it was close to Halloween and when I turned in the stereo, Black Sabbath- Iron Man was playing so I was like heck yea I wonder if I can make a death mask. So this is as far as I got today. Does anyone else do iron/death masks? I know some of you fellows do armor.

Today I finished this large plant pot stand for my bride. I got a lot more serious about my welding and even picked up a new helmet with auto darkening shield (what a huge difference being able to see). I made a table jig to bend up the rod. I had picked up this square rod a while ago on the roadside, the spreader plates come off an old Wheel Horse tractor plow and the rings from from an old set of cleat chains from that same tractor. To give you an idea of the size, the top plate is a 12" rotor (worn) from a 250 dirt bike. Did a distressed style paint job (a technique i learned years ago). Still need to add in a cover plate for the center diameter, just not sure what yet…

So over the weekend I was rather bored waiting for the final delivery of materials for my new gas forge. I have a pile of junk and a welder, (I am no welder lol) and decided to try my hand at sculptured metal art. I give you "Plierannosaurus Rex" and a simple "Love" for my lovely bride.

  7. Say hello to Crash. I have been poking him around and he has had many great names and has even been called scary. Please. I find him to be cute or silly. I ended up making him versatile that his head will sit on the steering wheel Or on a stand I made. No play either way. A few friends thought one part or the other looked better on its own so there. Everyone is happy or terrified. Pic heavy!

I've 99% finished my 2nd sculpture commission, a spread wing cormorant. I drew up the outline shape with my client so I knew they'd be happy with the proportions & posture. (In the pic of the drawings is a sample piece I whipped up for them). It's head was always going to be turned but I'm not that good at drawing. They've seen it now & are very happy. They just want it to rust so no weatherproofing. The small section of light gauge railway it's on will be welded to a verical post of light gauge railway so it can be stood up in their garden.

Hi, I've just made my first sculpture kind of thing. It's a forged 10" high daemon made from 1 x 3/8 old MS stock. It has big influence from African (sorry Ian ) tribal art. Any comments are welcome! Bests Gergely

So a friend from Canada was down and over a couple beverages he wanted a gnarly looking dragon head hood ornament. At first I was reluctant but soon got into it so in an hour with some input from him we made this. Unfortunately my instincts were right to want to hold off as when we were mounting it it fell while enlarging an existing hole to bolt it on and smashed his windshield delaying his trip home by 2 to 3 days while waiting on a new windshield but he loves it and also now has a new windshield. So much for quick.

  15. I've always been intimidated to try an animal head, but figured it was time to get this ball rolling. I guess its not the worst thing in the world, but I can see where I could have done a lot better. But still, for a first try, I don't think its all bad.

I've seen a few Russian Roses others have done to make key fobs and such. Thought I'd give them a try... Kinda have the idea of how they go together... simple, but not as simple as they look. While sitting in my armchair vegging a letter opener with a rose on the end popped into my head. Have a ways to go to get anywhere close to perfecting but the concept is sound. And I don't think I've seen anyone else do them yet... But I'm thinking they would be nice on an office desk and have a practical side to.

  18. This is my latest sculpture, it is called The Roses and was inspired by the White Rose movement of Munich. The panels are made up of copper plate and mild steel and they are 1m or 40" tall, all completely riveted together.

I very recently got a 25kg Anyang power hammer and plan to pursure my sculptural interests more now that my ideas are actually feasible. This is the first proper thing I've made under it using solely V tapered cross pein dies which were most effective at spreading. Forged from 1 piece of 30mm x 20mm flat bar, I deliberately didn't planish the hammer marks. The pictures don't really give a good sense of proportions but hey ho. Finished in a graphite based polish then burnished to highlight. Completely new to power hammers so looking forward to getting better at using it & making some tooling/dies to go with it.

I thought I would try to forge a small beard on the chin of a ram. There is probably an easier way, but I used a small hammer to create the projection below the chin. A squeeze with scrolling tongs helped a bit. Anyone have a better idea? I reckon if traded the horns for a kind of ruff, this guy would make a halfway decent lion.

  21. Started by Andrew Hood,

I saw a photo on here of a minion that someone else had made and I thought I would give it a go as I have had a hankering for a shed minion for a while. Now all I need is some heatproof purple paint and he's all finished. He's meant to be one of the feral minions from Despicable Me 2 and technically he shouldn't have a fart gun but I needed to make the chimney out of something so he got one. His tongue also doubles as a bit of a sausage holder/cooker and you can just balance a pan on his hair (need to give him a haircut with the anglegrinder and flatten it out a bit). Unfortunately it will be another two or three months before fire ban season finishes and I can fire hi…

My boss wanted a guitar to hang on his wall after seeing the scorpion and other work. He is an avid guitarist so I wanted to make a style he liked. After several times of asking I got a picture from his computer screen well among other guitar makes he has 2 Gibson Les Paul's so I'm going with that shadow of a shape, tho I almost started the hollow body electric Epiphone because I used to like them too. So here is the start after having an idea of what I wanted to use for some parts and winging the others letting the scrap " talk to me" other then a few bits I'm well on my way in the 4 hours I had to work this evening. Im debating the ring gears as the back dr…

  23. Started by Teebs,

I finally finished my second horseshoe sculpture, a unicorn as requested by my 7 year old horse crazy daughter. The horn is a farrier rasp, the piece around the eye is a section of sheet metal from a 45 gallon drum, the eyeball is the steel toe cap from an old warn out pair of my Blundstone workboots. The base Is from an old plow that I have since scrapped and the ears are cut from an old circular saw blade. I am happy with how it turned out, not sure yet where I will put it, am pretty much decided it's going outside unfinished and will just let it rust naturally.

Been asked to make a few dragon head pokers of late. Funny how you can get a run of things like that. This is the latest one.

I've had the bits for this lying around for a while but decided to get on with it put it together. A singing duo - I call them Tom and Tina Tin Snips. The integral parts are the heads - knuckle joints from a shearer's comb. Good because they have teeth and open and close. The bodies are tin snips and the instruments are whatever. Here they are: I added a microphone and clear coat in the last picture.
