I had a mental block and wasn't able to think of anything to do. So I figured I would practice basics. just trying to make tapers of various preplanned lengths. I did not put eyes or a mouth on this one, but a friends son likes it enough that he keeps it on his desk at home.

Hey all, Here's a youtube vid put up by one of the gallery owners who represents my friend James Lee Hansen's work. Jim is 82 now and has been doing sculpture since 1948 after he got out of the Navy - He's so spry and passionate about what he does - I can only hope to be as full of life at that age. The poems Jim's reading on the vid are his own and the opening are bits and pieces from one of our casting sessions. It's a tad long at 7 minutes but I hope you enjoy it! youtube

;) Hi there, This is my first post on this site so i hope someone can help me. On a sad note... my grandfather died last week and although i should be upset as we were close, i feel relieved that it wasn't a slow and painfull death. He spent 50 years of his life as a blacksmith in Holland and his last wishes were " I came from fire in the form of love, i worked with fire all my life now i go back to the fire ". I am now living in Holland and have followed his wishes in the form of cremation but am now struggling to find that special Urn for the memorial wall. I would really like one with a blacksmith or anvil on the top but i haven't found one in Holland yet, so i…

Im in the process of making a gate based on a 19 century design. The scrolls are from 1" x 1/2" formed on edge. This is my first attempt at blacksmithing since I worked as a fitter welder some 15 years ago.

My parents 43rd anniversary passed while I had taken a sabbatical from banging iron, so I had to get this to them a little late. Not real refined. Made from a spike drawn and split. I worked the heart sides one at a time and opened them up together in the last heat. My forge is not large enough for the whole thing to fit. The face and outer edge of the heart were sanded down to get shine, the heat oxidized for color. The whole thing was coated with interior/exterior laquer and clear-epoxied to a chunk of busted up countertop. To use, I just cut the picture to fit and secure it with a couple of rare earth magnets. That was a pretty cool idea, i thought.

This is a scuplture I did last year, '07, and had it in a local art show. (3 counties were involved) It now resides at the office where my wife works. There is a 2" solid ball "Trapped" in the tray. You can move the ball around but not remove it from it's confined area. Hence the title "Trapped". The main shaft is 1"rd. and the piece passing through it is also 1"rd. I forged the end perpendicular on the end of the 1" to form the tray. The copper piece is 1 1/4"rd. I ran all through a spring swage to form the 'wings' and since the copper was larger and softer it caused a wider 'wing'. The piece with the knot is 5/16"rd., I think, might be 1/4". Darn, it's tuff getting old…

Well, here it is. This is the rose I mentioned in a few other posts. My first blacksmithing (if you can call it that). I gave the rose to my Mom for Christmas. (new camera so focus is a little off) Rose: 1" & 1 1/4" square tubing. Stem: 1/8"x1/2" hot roll. Leaf: 3/8" cold roll square. Brass wire wheel in the angle grinder and a coat of Beeswax (propane heated). I worked on it for 3 days so I do not know how long it actually took me but I know a second one would be a lot less time. No forge - oxy-acetylene torch for heating. No anvil - 6" block of steel for the flat, 11" long 3/4" diameter center punch (pointed chisel) and the handle end of a 5' long pry…
