This started out as a commission after someone saw the frog i made. It started just to even get a concept before I could quote as I've never done it before. The idea was going like this but was going to have more going on and also tiny cherry blossoms made of copper all over it. I was unsure what really to quote so after running it through my head I gave her a lowball quote. Well my low ball quote scared her off and I got a " thanks but no thanks" already had time invested in the concept so I made something out of it. When life hands you lemons... Im not upset, how could I be. I can't pay to work and I can't quit either. So I named it Fall. Might add to it mig…

Ok here is the mental start to a project. Not blacksmith related other then blacksmiths may have made some of these bits. But insight into how an insane artists mind starts. We see something and the mind starts seeing things and it morphs from there. Well I can only talk for myself. But I see a rough cut piece of wood with old braces and bits fanning out to the smaller and older ones. Let me know what you think. I want to do this one without ruining any of these yet locking them in place. I love antiques like this and couldn't bear to ruin them. Best I want to go is to epoxy them into place. I plan to make this so it will happen.

Something that materialized tonight. Sometimes it just happens. While working on another project, this happened. the name was a bit of thinking and arguing but I hope it fits. The idea is to incorporate it into a gate or it could just be a wall hanger.

anyone forge a feather? I was doing leaves and thought it would be cool to try a feather. Has anyone else made one? How did you feel about it and what do you think about this one? when I started it I hated it but it's growing on me. They were brushed with a brass brush. It was my first time trying that too.

I was watching a house building program last night ( grand designs ), and they were talking about rusty steel cladding on a house. It apparently forms a protective coat of rust as it weathers that stops any further rust but gives it that deep golden rusty finish. Has anyone come across this before? Is there a workable version a blacksmith could use?

Shifting spanners (wrenches) are a finite resource. Comes a time when you run low on supplies for making 'shifty lizards' so I thought a few multi grip lizards would be the go till I find some more. Weld the handles together, bend in the forge and add some legs and a tail. Don't know what to call them - multi lizards? Nah!.

Has anyone done Chihuly in steel. I saw an exhibit in Seattle of Chihuly glass works and wondered if some of these pieces were possible in steel. I see problems with tubing that make it difficult. I understand that glass and steel are completely different and behave differently, but it would be wonderful to be able to produce steel objects that can flow a little like glass.

I'm working on the frame of my first sculpture commission, (few more bits to add in), it's a 4 foot tall animal that will be clad with a skin once the frame is finished. I'm blending anatomical correctness with the client's instructions of it being kinda friendly/cute, so some features are oversized. It's going to be abstract but it the client's brief is that it must immediately look the animal it's supposed to be. These pics are very flat looking & not at all as 3D as the real thing, some of the proportions don't look as they do in real life either...nevertheless, what animal do you think it is? If people can tell what animal it is even at this stage (from these rubb…

This is a piece I complete yesterday as a gift for a customer whose kitchen I just finished remodeling. I have made this design a two or three times now and have continued to refine the elements until I am pretty happy with the overall look of the piece.

I'm about to start a project that will have a dragon head & neck. I haven't been able to find much as far as dragon heads. a few videos on youtube, and a couple posts here and there that include a dragon head. A little story on the project. The dragon will be on the prow of a Viking longship fire pit grill that I'm going to make for a friend. They, and I don't want a "nice" dragon on the prow, nor do we want it to look period to Vikings. but I'm afraid that may be the best I can do as this will be the first project of this type I'll be taking on. Anyway, if you don't mind posting your dragons to help give me some inspiration as to the type of dragon I can try for it …

Here's another one for the 'file'. Finally got this file flower up in the garden. I sorta like the rust preventative finish which shows the texture, but I think it may end up being bright yellow and green.
