  1. I bought a Buffalo Forge No 616 about a year ago at an auction for $25. Looked decent shape but obviously had sat outside in grass and was rusted. it would not turn so I tried electrolysis on it and that didn't do it so now a year later I have a new plan. I don't have time to pend on this thing so I have mounted it up on my shed wall and oiled every joint and shaft opening that I could see. I then filled up the divot up at the top where the elevation wheel is to the brim.with motor 30W. I am asking for opinions about whether you think this will even work ( and time is not a problem at this pont, I can keep filling it this way for the next six months) or do I need to use …

  4. Have a Buffalo Forge #152 Post Drill with I think the original drill chuck. Picked up a Jacobs chuck at a garage sale and was going to install it on the drill press. The problem I'm having is getting the old drill chuck shaft out. I took out the set screw, now the shaft just spins freely, so I don't think its a morse taper or threaded almost feels like a bearing is around it. With the drill press being cast I don't want to hammer on it. How do you remove the shaft.

  5. Does anyone know the years that Buffalo Forge started making and ceased making the 612 post drill . I have a copy of an advertisement for it dated 1941, but no solid dates of manufacture .

Got this this the other day free for the hauling so I could not resist. It has been converted to electric power and several parts are missing though it still functions electrically. Does anyone have any idea what model of drill this is/was? or where I could find information on it? Model 203 or 97? I have cleaned it up some and it works though it runs to fast, also I will have to re babbit some of the major shafts. Any questions/comments welcome! Thanks-Caintuck

  7. Started by SpankySmith,

I'm working on a small project that involves drilling into the end of round stock. My original plan was to drill a slightly smaller hole in a block of wood and tuck the round stock in the hole to hold it upright to drill into its end in the drill press. That worked for a moment or so, then the drill bit got hot and wanted to grab the stock and spin it (yes, using lubricant). Grabbed the vise grips, they actually worked decently, but it was just eyeballing whether or not I was drilling straight down or not. So....anyone have some trick you want to share on doing this? My next best effort is going to involve locking it into a vise and coming at the end with a standa…

  8. Started by Michael,

A buddy found this big Atlas Drill Press on craigslist, alerted me by text and even dropped it off. Big beast, close to 200 lbs, had to reconstruct the space in the shop to hold the weight and lower the surface so the 4 foot tall "benchtop" press wouldn't hit the ceiling! Not sure of the year it was made. Clausing Inc. emailed a .pdf manual dated 1947. Came with a drawerful of vises, bits and a few other things I can't ID just yet (Ralmike's Tool-A-Rama? anyone?) and a keyless chuck marked Albrecht/Germany. The rework of the shopspace took half the weekend, the pondering on how to get this beast on the benchtop without significant personal injury took anoth…

  10. I just bought a Buffalo Post Drill 616 at auction for $22 and now am in the middle of busting rust and taking apart to put back together. However, I don't have a big shop and so do most work out in the yard. Was wondering if any of the Faire/Rendezvous/Historical Recreation Smiths have any stand setups for taking your full size post drills with you on the road. Thanks.

  11. So I bought a 616 last week for $23 and it needs a little work sure, but in looking at it I noticed that there was a third drive shaft with no gear on and didn't seem necessary and now looking online I see a third gear in this spot. Its not the gear attached to the flywheel and its not the big gear attached to the main shaft which has the handle through it. So what is this small gear for. Would like to restore it but not going any farther until I know Im not beating my head against a brick wall. Thanks in advance for your time....

Hi folks, I just bought a Silver MFG drill on eBay for a mere £32. I have no idea as to it's actual value but I can't believe it's only worth £32. Can anyone give me an idea as to it's true value? I don't want to sell it or anything, I'm just curious, I'd love it even if it was worth 32p. Here's the pictures from the auction. It needs a bit of love to get it back into tip top condition. The seller thought dates from around 1900 and he thought the numbers "513" cast into the handwheel could be a model number. Any help would be appreciated,

  13. I was wondering how many ways guys had come up with to adapt the standard 1/2" bit socket on post drills to take modern larger bits. Just bought a Buffalo Forge 616 and so now it is my new project for a while.

Hello Folks, I am working on a job that I could really use a mag drill on. There a a lot of different brands and even more options. I would use with regular twist drills most of the time and would like to be able to use a tap also. Is there a brand or option to stay away from or a brand or option you wish you would have included up front? I sure appreciate any advice. Regards John Woolsey

  15. Hi. I took a break from the usual projects and tried hand sharpening some drill bits. I still remember the metal shop class in which this subject was taught. The instructor gave us a 3/8" drill bit and asked us to follow the contour and grind it. It was easier to do this than sharpen a bad bit. Then, he showed us how to tell if it was good or not (equal edges, cuts, correct sized hole, etc). Then, he goofed up the ends and asked us to fix it. Finally, after the lesson, he told us all that we were lousy, and we should all go to an estate sale and buy some junk drills and fix them ourselves. Only then would we learn. Well, years later I did this. Seems that you…

  16. How do you organize your drills ? I've got the standard individual index boxes for fractional, letter and number up to 1/2" I've also got a few 17/32" around for 1/2" screw clearance screw holes. The big problem is the larger drills Some are reduced 1/2" shanks that I've turned some long Some short some Morse taper 1, 2, 3 Whatever I've bought, inherited or whatever ove the years. all in baskets that I have to root through to find something I don't use them too often, but I'd like them organized I don't really want to line the walls with them. It would be nice if it fit inside a filiing cabnet drawer or toolbox drawer What do you do, let me stea…

Hey guys, I've got a post drill here that's missing a table, and has no obvious markings other than "PD 31" on the crank side of the body. It's painted John Deere green under the dust, but I don't know if that's original. Any clue who made it?

In addition to my new leg vise, I also found one of these drill presses yesterday. It is in superb condition (as far as I can tell), and seems to work like it should. One question, the "chuck" (for lack of a better word) has a square hole with a set screw into it. Are there special drill bits I need to find? Can I modify existing bits? Or am I missing something? I've read a tiny bit about something called a "Jacob's Chuck?" Thanks!

Howdy all! I just acquired a Champion post drill on a trade and its operational but a wee bit rusty buttttttt its missing the chuck. According to my gauge its a 1/2" X 24 thread. Is there such a critter?? And if so where can i get a replacement? I actually want to get rid of my modern drill press and use this post drill for everything so finding a chuck is rather important. Any help would be appreciated!! Keith

I found this on Craigslist and went to get it yesterday. It was pretty rusty and caked with grease. I spent some time today cleaning it up. I wire wheeled every part, then I sprayed a clear coat over it and painted the raised letters gold. I also made the new wooden handle for it, it had a junky one held together with tape. I still need to mount the lower part to it and I plan on outing a modern chuck on it, but I just wanted to post it on here. I'm really happy with how it turned out. :) Before: After:

I HAVE THIS OLD DRILL PRESS WHICH HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO V-BELT POWERED, I JUST MOUNTED IT ON THE WALL WITH THE MOTOR, I COULD LOWER THE SPEED ,BUT DO I NEED TO. EVERY TIME I START IT UP I PUT OIL ON THE GEARS AND IN THE BUSHING HOLES, IT SPINS FAST ABOUT TWICE AS FAST AS THE HAND CRANK WOULD HAD SPUN IT. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK, SHOULD I TAKE IT OFF THE WALL AND ADJUST THE SPEED OR IS IT FINE JUST THE WAY IT IS,WILL THIS HARM THE GEARS, OR IS THIS FINE? THE REASON IM ASKING THIS IS BECAUSE ITS ALLOT OF WORK TO TAKE IT OFF THE WALL AND RE-BOLT IT, WHY DO THE WORK IF NOT NEEDED. THANKS DAYNE

I scored this drill for $5 at a garage sale today. It is missing the part that engages the ratchet which I assume mounts in the small hole on the nut. Having never actually scene one of these drills before I don’t know what it looks like. Could someone post a picture of the missing mechanism? Thanks
