I got a Champion post drill last night. It needs work and its missing some parts. I was thinking someone here might have one and could tell me how this one part works,it looks like some type of power return. But I don't know because mine is missing some parts in that area.I probably won't fix that part because I am missing the two gears and the bottom drive gear is missing teeth. It shouldn't affect how it works,I'll just have to turn the feed wheel by hand to bring it back up.This is a picture of the same model, but is not mine,it's just one I found doing a search.OWWM - Photo Index - Champion Blower & Forge Co. - post drill Anyone know how it would have worked?

I recently got a lovely little #50 post drill. I'll post about the purchase in the followed me home thread. But, I have a couple of questions. It's fairly small. The quill is only about 16" long. It has a standard handcrank but also has a grooved wheel that would accept a belt from an electric motor. I understand that most motors turn at 1750 so they have to be geared down. If I want to run up to 1/2" bits in mild steel or softer what speed should the chuck turn? Does anyone know if Buffalo tools were painted? If I can I use original colors. If not it I'll pick something else. It's really ammazing how simple and effective it is. I've got it apart to clean it.…

I'm working on getting a couple of online documents together telling the history of common tools we use every day. I'm starting out with drill bits. It seems that documentation for the pump/bow/brace drills are easy to find but the actual shape of the bits tends to be lacking. If anyone has any photos or references it would be greatly appreciated. My goal is to start with rome and finish up with the invention of the twist bit in 1861.

I am all new to this forum thing so bear with me. I have been working Iron for well over 30 years and have picked up a few old pieces that I am looking to let go but have no idea of the value. I am not trying to get rich but am trying to get the pieces in the hands of someone who would love to have them to use,So, I need a little guidence. I have a C.W. Coe #2 drill press, and a line shaft of 40 feet or so with clutches and pullys that I am looking to move out of the shop because I do not use them as I thought I would. Can anyone help me with a IDEA of what I should ask for the Pieces. Thank you. Dennis M

Hey all, I do a lot more lurking here than posting, just trying to take it all in. I just brought home a pretty cool looking old floor standing drill press. Have been looking for a 21" camel-back press for awhile now. thought I was familiar with the different styles out there, but this is a new one for me. it is set-up for line shaft-drive, but instead of step pulleys for changing speeds, it has a curved disk near the base of the drill, with a small wheel that can be moved out to engage the curved disk, i think it is called a sheath arrangement. The guy I bought it from had a smaller version with the same arrangement in his shop that he uses everyday. Mine is about like a…

A couple of months ago I was given a Canedy Otto #2 hand cranked drill press. Over all it's in good shape and shouldn't be too much of a problem to get it up and running. General Shot The biggest issue is that some of the auto feed components are missing and I'd like to fabricate a replacement. Auto Feed Gears Near Flywheel Additionally, there's a "mystery part" whose purpose I can't determine. It's located below the feeder wheel and has multiple holes in it. Looks kinda like a drill index except the holes are the same size. "Mystery Part" Does anyone have a functioning version of this press that they could take photos of? Or does anyone have complete …

Hi fellow aspiring machinists, My name is Eric and am building a home shop for fun and ranch maintenance. A few years ago, like 12, I bought the 3MS and used it to fit out our new plant. I loved it. One night, we were moving it into the new machine shop. The building designer put 84" doors on all the compartments and it was necessary to lean the machine over to get it into the room. Well, tragically, a strap broke and down it went, cruelly mis-handled. It broke into little pieces and I went outside and threw up. Several years later, I welded the broken arch support section but never completed the job, due to other pressing matters. Last week, the boss indic…

Momma always said that it is not nice to brag.....but she never drove from southwest Michigan to central Illinois with a 1500 pound Leland-Gifford drill press in the back of a half-ton Ford... So i suppose i have the rights. I won this one off of Ebay. It actually cost me more in gas to get it than I paid for it. Three spindles. Left most spindle is set up with a taping head and tap chuck (still not certain if this is OE or not, will know once it is cleaned a little better). Each spindle has four adjustable speeds via flat belt drive. It was once set up to run off of a line shaft as the slack belt engagement mechanism is still intact inside of the base. Unfortuna…

A friend a mine is restoring an old Fairbanks. Some of the parts are missing and will have to be fabbed. Would anyone that has one be willing to take a couple photos for me? The trip lever that disengages the power feed and the foot pedal and linkage to the tight and loose pulleys are the two areas in question. It is a 20" or 21" Fairbanks. Thanks much, JM

Hi. I just bought a large hand drill off craigslist. It is 10 amps, with a 3/4" chuck, and the data on it says that it can drill a 3/4" hole in steel. I also bought a whole tray of fat S&D drill bits. I just tried the drill out, and it really required some hard pushing. I tried to make a rivet bolster out of a junk end of a steering rod. Not mild steel, but not really hard either. Spark tested intermediate, and could be cut easily with a Starrett bi-metal hacksaw blade. I needed to sit on the drill to make the 1/4" hole. There was no way any chips were going to come out for a 3/8" hole. So, I rigged up a "blacksmith's drill" according to the Blueprints and w…

What cutting oil would you suggest and why? Can high(er) speed cutting and hand speed cutting use the same cutting oil?

Hello folks, Here is a horizontal drill press setup I made from an old hand cranked post drill and some scrap steel angle iron and square tubing I had laying around the shop. I had to forge up a new automatic feed lever assembly, and since everything is horizontal, I had to make a return spring to move the feed ratchet back up. In the vertical setup the shape of the feed ratchet allows it to return by gravity. I could have made up a counter weight extended off the part that rides on the crank cam, but a return spring gives a clean appearance, plus I wanted to try my hand at spring making. It has a flat stock table that can be adjusted up or down and forward and back fr…

Anybody got a good lead on where to get a 1/2" drill chuck with a 1/2"x20 arbor that will fit in my post drill? I found a bunch of chucks on mscdirect, but all the arbors I could find had a morse taper on one end or the other... McRaigl
