So on my old drill press table there is a lot of holes drilled partially into it where oil likes to pool today when I get to my trade school I am filling all of the partially drilled holes with oxy-acetylene brazing I need to flatten the surface back down afterwards so my question is how flat should I get it should I go as far as to stone it or should I just file it down or hit it with a grinder? Will an oilstone even work with the patches of brass from the braze? Should I file it down ? Also should I put some kind of finish on it?, if so how and what kind? Sorry for all the random questions just figured it would be better to ask people who understand my stance on properl…

So I have this VERY old 15 inch floor standing drill press it was originally run off of a steam driven line shaft but has since been converted to a massive 1/2 hp motor I am currently having the female Morse taper in the spindle re-reamed as it has taken a little abuse over the years i also have the original MT-2 chuck that came with the machine and the taper on it is VERY beat up I am wondering are the tapers themselves hardened? If not is there a reason they are not? If they are not I will probably tig weld the abused parts and have it re-turned down as I currently have the ability to have this done for free so why not? I know overall it would be best to just buy a new …

I just bought a secondhand drill press that came with a box of MT-shanked bits in very good shape. I understand how to remove the bits (the press came with the appropriate wedges), but I'm wondering about how best to put them in. I've been putting them in place and giving them a decent thunk with a dead-blow mallet, but sometimes unless I'm using an extremely slow feed speed, the bit just jams as the quill keeps spinning. I'm using plenty of cutting oil and not hearing any squealing either from the bit or the quill. Am I missing something?

Got this old drill press in a local auction, it was a bit sad, its an Arrel made in england, the quill had a few teeth broken off it because a bolt head jammed into them witch had fallen in, next I will get flatbelts made and it should be good, motor works well but is 3 phase so I will get a VFD, they work well, the part of the world I am in I have 240v in every room of the house.

  9. Hi - I found this forum as I was investigating the worth for my late father’s Cadedy Otto drill press. It is Marked KL 22 on the base. I’m thinking it may be the model number. It is at least 7 ft tall. Probably weighs over 500 lbs. is this the correct forum to discuss its value? Thank you!

  10. I purchased a large Prentice Bros camelback drill press about a month ago. I plan to restore it and add it to the list tools my shop is equipped with. I'm not sure on the size but it weighs a ton. I will keep yall updated! If there is any advice or tips, feel free to share. I'm receiving it Monday and plan to unload it Tuesday. From what I saw of it when I purchased it the machine seems to be missing or even be lacking an auto download system.

While browsing the website of my favorite industrial surplus warehouse, I encountered an old Walker Turner drill press which appears to have an interesting power feed. It looks like the lever in the front engages and disengages the feed: Which is powered by pulleys taking power off the main motor: I'm guessing that this doesn't have a reversing mechanism, but that the standard return spring takes it back up. No idea if it has anything that automatic disengages at a preset drilling depth or if the operator has to manually disengage the feed. I'm not sure what this thing attached to the side of the table is, but I suspect it might be a …

Hi ya’ll I’m new here. Heard somewhere that some of the post drill gurus live here, so I’m hoping you can help me. I recently came into a Champion Forge post drill, I think it’s a No. 110. It came with a 100 year old Westinghouse ac motor. It didn’t come with a chuck at all, and I’d like to put a Jacobs chuck on it. The real problem is that the spindle ends in a 1/2 “ threaded shaft with a crazy fine thread. It’s not 1/2-20, it might be 28 tpi. I didn’t know there was such a thing. Anyway I don’t know what to do with it, I haven’t seen a Jacobs chuck with more than a 20 tpi thread. I’m going to try attach pics. Any help will be appreciated.

This odd drill bit followed me home recently. Its hand forged, with a square taper at the top to fit a brace. Then there's a nice twist, and hand forged cutting edges. A quick check with a file shows its hardened at the business end. The diameter is very nearly 1/2". The really odd thing is, its a left handed drill, and the tip was never sharpened after forging. I tried to drill through 3/4" thick pine, and gave up about halfway through - only one cutter was cutting (scraping actually) and it was slow going. Why did he make it left handed? Was it a mistake? Was he just getting practice? If he wanted a lefty bit to remove a stuck bolt, why was it never sharpe…

  15. I'm considering buying this drill press. Looks 1880-1900 era, but I'm no expert. Couldn't fully make it out, but the casting says "London" -something. The owner told me it was purchased from a blacksmith shop in the early 1970's and it was in use up until maybe 20 years ago before it went into storage. Any feedback from someone better informed than myself would be much appreciated.

  17. Hello! I work for a museum and there's a building that I'm trying to clean out that has a lot of random, accumulated tools. Some were donated, while others were just sort of brought in to use on a project and left behind. There's a huge drill press that I'm hoping to donate to a different organization, but I need a little more information on how old it is and if it's a specific model. I've gotten so far as it's a Cincinnati Bickford, but am having trouble digging up anything more about it.

  18. So I have always admired the older style of drill presses but never expected to really purchase one but this little beauty came along at a really good price and I couldn't pass it up! The former owner had it hanging way up at the top of this huge building he had along with lots of other old tools. When he got it several several years ago all he did to it was coat it in paint. All the thick paint it going to be a pain to get off but I'm not complaining, it really preserved it super well and the thing is just in amazing shape. I got it all tore it down tonight and plan of using electrolysis to get all the thick paint off it this weekend. I am going to repaint it afterward…

A few weeks ago I won an old Champion post drill at online but local estate auction, sight unseen (since I didn't make it to preview) under $50 out the door. This is partly a tool addiction, partly a homeschool project. It was mostly frozen up, but otherwise intact. It took a weekend, a can of PB Blaster, and a bit of plumbers torch heat to free it up and get it working again, then sat on the workbench for a few weeks until I could get it temporarily vertical in the carport. It'll get mounted out back later, but the guys at the weld shop wanted to try it out. It works, the kids love it, but one question - you can see in the last photo, the cam and roll…

Good to meet everyone. this is my first post. I picked up this post drill a while back and have recently gotten around to messing with it. I was hoping someone could help ID it. Only thing I can find on it is "Champion Forge Co, Lancaster PA" on the right side if facing it and "Warranted" on the left side. No model I can find, at least prior to disassembly. It resembles a a 96 but there are some distinct differences in, what I believe, is a quick return system. I have scoured pics and period ads for these and have yet to find one that exactly matches.

Hey all, I'm back again. Quite possibly biting off more than I can chew this time. With the post drill project still in process I am seriously considering taking this on additionally for the winter. Now I have to explain that I have no experience with these drills but I believe I possess a fraction of common sense, a hair of mechanical ability and the annoying habit of asking too many questions of those who know better before I get my fingers where they don't belong (still have all nine). I have never owned one and if I'm lucky that may change. This appears to be a Rockwell 20" There aren't quite enough photos for my liking and the definition is not quite what I would lik…

What kind of RPMs do I need? What are some good brands? Any drill press tips or advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  25. Hello, looking for my Buffalo drill post No65R. When ever I put a bit in the chuck it is a bit off center and has a slight wobble to the drill. I’m looking for any advise of where to purchase a new shank or if there is a chuck/adapter for this drill. Anything would be helpful.
