  1. Hello all. First post here. Just bought this forge yesterday and would love to give it a try. Bought it without legs and blower. What is this folding hood like item? Did that come with it originally? Also what is the bracket on the middle of the lid for? These are some reference pics I found of the unit in use and of the blower I need to fit. Any idea on what to call this blower? Through my searching it seems this ones reference number is elusive. Any tips for setup? Just throw some dirt in there to keep the fuel in the middle?
  2. The Berkshire Blacksmiths put on another great Age of Iron weekend at Hancock Shaker Village, Mass. recently and one of the highlights for me was the military issue Portable Blacksmith Forge, circa WW I. I would love to get my hands on one of these, so if you have one or know someone who does then I would like to hear from you. I did find one on Ebay, but the shipping from CA could make it cost prohibitive. I've just started looking, so I don't know how common they are in the New England area. Portable Blacksmith Forge.wmv
  3. I bought my first forge the other day at the highway 127 yard sale for $50. I was told that it was called a bellows forge or a rivet forge. The only markings I found on it is on the side of the pan it says No. 77 Mohawk. It is missing the bellows aka the blower, arm, and grate. I would like to learn more about this forge the only thing I could find is an ebay listing for one very similar if no the same. ebay link removed I plan on making it operation but I am unsure whether I should update it to an electric blower or make it as close to original as possible by building my own bellows.
  4. Can anyone tell me about the history of the forge in the attached photos? Seems like a mysterious topic from what I've read thus far. Surely someone out there knows when this was made and for whom. Extra point for a link to documentation (tech manuals, etc). Thank you.
  5. I just bought a Buffalo Post Drill 616 at auction for $22 and now am in the middle of busting rust and taking apart to put back together. However, I don't have a big shop and so do most work out in the yard. Was wondering if any of the Faire/Rendezvous/Historical Recreation Smiths have any stand setups for taking your full size post drills with you on the road. Thanks.
  6. Well look at my new acquisition from the weekend, It fairly jumped into my hands and for R400 bucks it was a good steal. It was a part of a whole set of stuff that the bloke had from a deceased smith (rest his soul) and was just what I was looking for to start my portable outfit. All I need to do now is find another washingmachine motor for my other blower and ill be set! This thing weighs in at 30kg so its quite light compared to my 60kg brute I use normaly. Here you can see the brand on the forge bowl is millenium. This is where the blower will be mounted and the nice part about it is its adjustable so I can make anything fit in there. I had to dismantle the poor guy to get it home. All the little bits and pieces, thankfully the whole thing was covered in grease which kept almost everything mobile and loosenable. I say almost everything because this little fiend was holding the 4 toed foot at the base and the nut had rusted shut, if you can look closely you can see the bulge around the intersection between the nut and the bolt. There was thankfully just enough space to wedge a hacksaw blade in and start sawing, but woe to me the only blade I could find was from my neighbor and it was almost entirely flat. I counted 20 teeth along the whole length of it, so as you can imagine I stood there for quite a while. What you guys think?
  7. Nobody Special

Lawnmower forge I made. Seems I needed to put together a small portable forge, and there was this busted lawnmower when I moved in......so, add brake disc and homemade refractory and voila.......Feel free to laugh. It works.
  8. I just acquired a fairly new portable forge that is belt driven, but I can't seem to upload any pictures, sorry! Anyway, where is the best place to go to buy replacement belts, should that I need one? Does anyone know? Also, my belt seems to have loosened some since I riveted it. Should I try to remove the rivets and re-rivet, or is there a way to shrink the leather some (I don't need much) without causing cracking? Thanks!
