Hi All, So I have seen this drill up for sale and from the specs I have seen on the attached it looks pretty good. I just wanted to get a couple of opinions on whether this would be a good metal drill. I wouldn't be working anything to heavy maybe 10mm thick at the most and certainly nothing over 12mm diameter. I did notice some damage to the base in the picture but I should be able to put a steel wedge under to balance it. Mod note: the commercial link has been removed per the IFI Terms of Service. If you wish for members to comment on the suitability of this drill, please post the manufacturer, specs, etc in a comment below.

I have an quite old HF drill press which is wasting me money. I mostly make knifes, and its taking me too long and costing me too much in damaged drill bits going through annealed metal. I have to go at higher speeds than I should, because at lower speeds it just stalls at the first contact. Someone is selling a Firestorm Drill Press near me for $50. Will this be any better than my HF, and if so, good enough to drill through annealed blade steel? If not, how powerful of a drill should I get?

Hey Everybody, First of all I apologize if there is a topic on this already, but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for drill bits that can drill through 5160 without taking an hour. The drill bits i have are not doing the trick. Any help would be much appreciated. Zach

An interesting one from Craigslist, in a town up near the border. Not your usual Champion or Can-Otto. Atypical flywheel location. .

I'm thinking about purchasing a buffalo pd20 that is missing the crank arm and handle and advancement arm. The rest is complete. Is it easy to replace those parts or will it cost more than it is worth? Attached is a picture of it for you to see what I am working with. Thanks in advance!

So I accidentally left my Dewalt 20v max impact driver outdoors, last night. It was under a shelter, so it shouldn't have gotten wetter than just normal Tennessee dew. It was cold, though, too (high 20s or low 30s Fahrenheit). I brought it in this morning, and didn't notice any problems until tonight when I picked it up. It is supposed to be slow on the "1" setting, fast on the "2" setting and even faster on the "3" setting. Right now, though, it is sometimes very fast, sometimes slow (as it should be) on the "1" setting. The "2" setting is slow like the "1" setting should be, and the "3" setting is normal. Tried a different batterrie, and same thing. I know this isn't th…

Hi Gang, Does anyone know of a source for post drill bits besides ebay ? I have 3 really good post drills, one dated 1807 and I don't want to put "modern" chucks in them. Thanks.

I know for some things like a Post Vice say, there are some specific attributes that make it a good choice for smithing over modern variants. Are there similar attributes for a Post Drill that better suit them to smithing or were they just the predecessors to modern drill presses? I have several modern drill presses already however a Post Drill is listed locally, wondering if there is some merit in it other than the nostalgia.

In trying out the notion of drilling out a hammer head before drifting (to save my arm a little wear and tear) I decided to keep alive the old school character of my shop by acquiring a ca. 1900 hand powered drill press. It is a Silver Mfg. Co. (Salem, Ohio) model 1 1/2 and it tore through the 1” square 4140 bar that you see here. With right hand cranking the handle and the left hand slowly tightening the top wheel I was ripping out what looked like pretty impressive wood shavings. At my approximately 60 rpm rate the bit, which I kept lubricated with oil, stayed cool and the entire job took less than 5 minutes. As efficient as an electric drill press? No, but lots of fun …

Hi All, I have seen this drill press for sale, and would like some advice on whether it is worth getting. My current setup is I drill free hand or use a hand drill in a drill press but I have run into a few issues with this setup as my only way to kill the drill is to reach over and pull the plug. Thanks, Luke

I have a post drill I recovered from an old barn. There is no name on it that I can find. It is missing the drill shaft and bevel gear that drives it. It also need a chuck, bit that I can replace with a new one. I have been watching Ebay, but I could use some other places to look for these parts. I could probably make a new shaft, but the gear is beyond me.

Finally decided to spend a few dollars [~$300] and get a floor stand drill press. Mostly for mild steel, 1/2" holes. Haven't found anything used within driving distance. Any opinions on the drill presses available from any of the Big Box stores ? (Going to Albuquerque later this week and thought I'd shop around a bit.) Thanks, Dave

Just aquired this post drill at a farm auction. Got the drill un siezed but I'm stuck with the feed side. It seems to be siezed and can't figure out how to get the feed moving. Not sure if I'm missing something basic about the operation. Is there a parts diagram available so I can figure out how to dismantle it and clean it ?

Hi, I am trying to find some good pictures of a champion post drill. I lost some parts for a basket case drill I had when a tree fell on my shop. So, if anyone either has the missing parts and wants to sell them, or has good pictures of the missing parts so I can make them let me know. Location, Wilmington, DE

Good day all. I'm a bit heavy into steam and hit miss engines. I recently picked up a line shaft to install in an covered outdoor shop where I have various engines.I'll be operating accessories off shaft. I also picked up a Champion Blower and Forge Co post drill that's in reasonably good shape. Can anyone out there tell me what model number this one might be? I'd like to do more research on it to be better informed and familiar with the workings. Thank you in advance for any and all information.

I just bought my first post drill for $30.00. Its a Columbia but there are no identifying numbers anywhere on the drill. It is stuck pretty solid at this point but I have gotten some of the smaller parts moving and the set screws loose. I think I can get the rest moving with more work, lubrication and time. The drive wheel for the self feeder is broken but a prior owner forged a piece of similar size stock to complete the circle then encased both pieces in a ring of metal that looks similar to a mini wagon tire. I just need to cut or grind the teeth into the new semi circle so the actuator arm will move the wheel. I also need to make the actuator arm which I think I …

Does anyone know if post drills were supplied originally with a wrench to change out the drill bits? Usually 3/8" square. If so, what do they look like?

On a recent trip to the local dump's scrap metal pile of glory, I found this interesting find: After digging it out and bringing it home to my shop I found why this neglected drill was tossed by the previous owner. 1. It is seized 2.The top wheel has a crack 3. The nut on the top of the keyed shaft is cracked 3. Chuck bolt head is snapped off Only marking is "No. 00" on other side Any help or advise on restoring this post drill would be much appreciated

Picked up a Silver No.1 post drill that I'd like to clean up and hang on the wall of the shop. Works well and is mostly complete except for the auto feed arm/pawl. I know finding the part would be a miracle so I'd like to forge one as close to original as possible, problem is I can't find photos with enough detail to do this. Anyone here have this drill? I could use a few detailed photos and measurements of said arm and pawl. Here's a pic of my drill in its current state: Here is the part I need: I could figure out the length but do not know if there is an offset above and below the bolt or what the backside looks like. I know it's a longshot but any help w…
