I am looking around and can't find if i can pay a yearly fee to get rid of all the pop up adds on the forum like you can do on others. with the wealth of information here it would be well worth the cost to me. Thanks

So, my wife just moved her yarn shop into a new space, which is just about perfect except for one thing: there’s a large air conditioning unit mounted on the ceiling that sounds like an airplane taking off. I’ve measured the noise with a decibel meter on my phone, and the level jumps about 20 db when the thing kicks on. Naturally, this makes conversation difficult and does not contribute to the relaxed atmosphere we’re trying to encourage. The majority of the sound appears to be coming out of the end closest to the wall, where the filter is mounted. It seems to me that if I add some sound-absorbing panels to the ceiling and wall of that space…

  3. I'm wondering if I can make a water Wheel in a Creek that has barely any water going threw it and if it's legal to make a dam on part of the creek that's on our land. The creek is 15 feet at its deepest point and I have alot of sandstone, knocked down trees, but the creek bed is made of sand and stones. I know how to partially make

  5. I ran across this You Tube video and couldn't stop watching it. Talk about rabbit holes. This is from the narrative. "Deep in the remote mountainous wilderness of Montana, we find this remarkable structure known as the Sage Wall. This imposing megalithic wonder is composed of massive polygonal granite stone blocks intricately stacked and aligned in a perfectly straight line. The Sage Wall's unique features, such as its straight lines and angular formations, set it apart from the natural geological formations commonly found in the region, connecting it with other sites commonly known as the Montana Megaliths." I can't control the wind, all I can…

Have you a tool, book, fossil, antique widget machine, chunk of metal that's special to you? Have you something Grandpa left you that has a story to tell? Old Photo that's special to you? Flea market find that's one of a kind.... What resides in your curio cabinet or under all the junk in your shop? I collect weird tools, historical photo's and the list goes on. My favorite is a Bulldog Boot Jack in the form of a pistol. A family heirloom of sorts. What's hiding in your closet, shop, show cabinet or under the bed? My Grandpa was both blacksmith and machinist and I came to own his tools. Amongst the lot was a toothpick sized crankshaft he cut that I treasure! …

Today June 6th is the anniversary of the largest sea invasion to ever take place. Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy France to face off against a well entrenched Axis. These men faced unsurmountable odds many never even setting foot on the beach and even more to never return home. Through sheer determination and courage they were victorious. They truly were the greatest generation.

The USS Cod is a WWII-era submarine in Cleveland, Ohio. It’s maintained as a museum shop by a dedicated group of volunteers, who just came up with a rather cool idea. Since it doesn’t actually go anywhere, they decided to replace some of the missing batteries with 3D-printed copies of their top covers, giving an accurate look of what the Cod looked like when it was in service and also providing a lot of storage space that was otherwise missing. Cool idea.

This image is from a listing in my local industrial surplus place. I was thinking that this chain might be good for making cannister damascus, until I noticed how big the links are. For scale, that's a standard 40" x 48" pallet it's sitting on. Caveat emptor!

  15. Good evening all- Sharing this Facebook marketplace lead on a good price on 52100 steel. I picked up 26 lbs at $1 per pound (I'm local). The business states that all of this stock had been on a railcar since 1985, the owner had purchased it for his business, retired, and just wanted to get rid of it. The business selling it now is Rescued Metals out of Kalamazoo Michigan. Ignore the description of "pickled and annealed" as they copied/pasted another website's description of their 52100. [MOD NOTE: commercial link removed per TOS. Interested parties can contact the OP or do a websearch for the business website.]

Something happened today that embarrassed me. I thought it might be fun and refreshing to document those moments here. Just remember that IFI is a family friendly G rated forum, so nothing that would violate the TOS like politics, religion, no cussin, fussin, etc. Now an embarrassing moment. Our weather forecast is for much colder weather starting tonight. Temperatures will drop to well below freezing with thunderstorms and the possibility of snow sleet or freezing rain. OK I like to be prepared so I went out to test the standby generator. The last time it was tested was 8/13/22 and it ran fine. I went through my start up procedure, check the fuel tank le…

Hi everyone I hope you have good day, as winter went here I am not blacksmithing for a while, and month ago I had accident on work, well I did wrong move and got pain in spine, to be more precise I have herniated disc which pinch nerve now , I am recovering but I want to ask question. When someone can return to blacksmithing and working on anvil, should I be more careful in future while forging, does anvil height matter, will lifting and pounding with hammer affect discs in spine. I asked this because I am sure some of you have that or similar experience.

Hey, this might sound like a weird question, but I'm looking for a poem to use as a class project, and I'm trying to find the poem talking about all of the craftsmen at King Arthur's court sitting in the order of who had made the most items for the castle; the blacksmith was last in line because he had only made the door handles for the castle, but then it was revealed that the blacksmith made all of the tools for the other craftsmen so he was moved to the head of the table. I read it once and thought it would be perfect for this project, but I can't find the name or the poem anywhere. I was wondering if you could direct me to the name or the poem itself. Thanks!

I hope this is the right place for this post. I've never been that good at figuring out where things go. I also hope this isn't an old discussion, I didn't find any with a google search. Short background: I really wanted to get out and make some stuff for friends and family before this weekend, because that's when the family Christmas gatherings are in my family. But it didn't happen for various reasons. So now I am stuck without any handmade gifts that I was planning. So I had an idea. But I'm not sure if it's a good idea, or if it would be in poor taste, socially. I'm not that smart socially, so I wanted to get opinions. I also thought it might make for a fun…

I got up this morning and decided to finish my anvil stand so I grabbed hammer and chisels to set about carving out an indention to set my anvil in. I don't use chisels much since I don't do mortices or anything like that so my skill level is what you might call low. I grabbed my coffee on the way out and sat down on an old truck tool box that I use as a bench as well as it's intended use. I taped off the top of the stand, traced the outline and set about my task. I ran a line with my chisel all the way around and then, very carefully, started working down towards that line. It was a train wreck. Blowing out end grain everywhere metal touched wood. I slowed down and worke…

Figured there would be some folks on here more experienced than myself that could help me out with a smokey fireplace in our new house. When we moved in it had a gas fireplace insert that we shut off and removed because that's not a real fire. We also removed the "fascia" (what I'm calling the non-structural decorative front) of the fireplace, which was some tacky looking painted fake stone that was built to take up a lot of space in the room. We are remodeling the living area so now was the time to do it. Part of the "fascia" I think was acting as a hood of sorts, which I think needs to (and will be when we do a new brick fascia) be replaced. I was thinking a …

  25. Every year of my adult life, I have said a prayer for those lost and the survivors of that day. Then I check for stories about Pearl Harbor in every news outlet I can find. Sadly there has been less and less to be found. Today I checked every outlet I could think of and there has been zero...nada...nothing, it's a sad day for sure when the country forgets our hero's.
