Hi guys, I'm trying to design a layout for a blacksmith shop for industrial design students. To be honest I don't know much about blacksmithing or the machinery used.. But I have a general idea. The machinery or tools required are: metal guillotine, sand blaster, forge, grinding, metal saw, plasma cutter, MIG, TIG and spot welding. I will also need a Foundry (metal casting). I am currently doing research about the machinery and the security measurements. However any help from you guys would be welcomed, especially about the workflow in the shop or how to organize the equipments etc. P.S: I added the floor plan where the shop will be (The space in grey) Thank you

This was filmed way back in May just after I made the tomahawk mandrel video.. I haven't been feeling inspired to produce videos so this video has minimal edits. 1 to be exact. Been to busy with other things. I left in all the mistakes. which I usually do. It's part of the fun.

Hello all. I want to ask anyone if they know what what kind of steel would be common to find in a scrapyard, but grade enough to make a hammer. Ive been doing some minor smithing at a local shop for a few months now, and I think it’s time to make my own hammer. I’ve read articles saying 1045, 4130, 4140, are some of the better steels for hammers. 1045 seems to be a particular favorite amongst smith’s. So here is my question, when I go to the scrap yard, what should I be looking for? What are some applications of some of the metals mentioned above, and does anyone have an specific example about a piece of scrap they turned into a hammer? Any info would really help. Thanks all!

Hey everyone, I am new to blacksmithing. I am only about a week into it and two failed attempts behind me. I am making a trip to a scrap yard tomorrow and just would like some suggestions on what to keep an eye out for. My set up is extremely simple, homemade coal forge, gonna burn thru sooner or later. I have 1 hammer and a pair of pliers for tongs. My "anvil" is a 1/4 inch hot roll plate on top of a stack of timbers, hoping to replace in a month or so. If anyone has any kind of suggestions I am always open to listening. I will be posting pics of everything now that I found this place.

Hello, first off I am sorry that I do not have any pictures at the moment, I will update with pictures when I am able. I would like to know what kind of steel railroad track connectors are made from (to be clear this is not railroad track). From what I have seen on the web my guess is that it is made from the same high carbon steel that railroad track is made from. However I was not able to get an actual confirmation on it. I was hoping that I could make hardy hole tools from it as well as other items that require good steel. For those who are curious as to how I got a railroad track connecting rod: I work at a place that uses railroads and it was leftover junk that I was permitted to take. thank you all

Hi guys, the other day on an auction I got 2 boxes of oldmanemu suspension springs for 50ZAR ( that's about 4 USD ) , I read that spring steel works differently, so I don't wanvto start on those and just end up o wasting them How does spring steel forging differ from mind steel. Is the heat treating process the same ? Thanks for any advice Michael.
