Hello All, thought I would share the design I came up with for my chimney/hood/stack/forge setup. Admins, wasn't sure to post it here or in the builds! This is primarily about my stack so... Please move if needed. So I read through a bunch of the threads on here and built my setup based on what seemed to be the consensus (with materials I had on hand). I was given a few 6'-ish pieces of 10" spiral duct and decided to build around those. I built my forge at the same time using the water cooled side draft forge design and the hood is built from the "Super Sucker Side Draft" design. I had a few issues with the tuyere being too close to, and too far below the face of…

I'm stuck. So far, I haven't been able to figure out how to legally put a chimney into the shed. Here are the options I've thought of with their respective problems. 1. Put a black, single-walled stove pipe straight up through the roof. These require a minimum clearance of 18 inches between it and combustible materials in order to be up to code. That means a four-foot circle (counting 12" pipe) cut out of my roof. No can do. 2. Do the same, but with double-walled chimney pipe. There are some of these that do not require clearance to combustibles, but their exteriors are mostly galvanized. I don't want galvy hanging over my forge. Also, the bill would be a solid…

Good morning everyone, Long time lurker, first time poster! I'm in a real jam and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction please. Very soon (this week if all goes according to plan!) I will have my coal/coke side draft forge delivered. The hood has a 10" hole for the chimney. The big catch here, I cannot find 10" chimney/stove pipe in Canada to save my life! I've checked the big box stores, I've checked the specialty fireplace/wood stove stores, I've called a few HVAC companies. 6" and 8", no problem! I can find those all day long. 10" ? Non-existent! AND 99% of the American websites won't ship to Canada. I'm located in Ontario, thoug…

Anyone have experience/thoughts with sticking an inline booster fan into the system to help a poorly drawing coal forge chimney? Something like this: Remove commercial link per TOS.

I'm in the process of rearranging my smithy layout to be better ergonomically situated with anvil, forge, and equipment. I'm wanting to move my coal forge to the center of the smithy, it's a drop shed closed on one side with a tin roof. I'm wanting to build a brick forge and chimney, one purpose of the brick chimney will be to replace one of the roof support 4x4's. I've been looking for plans, but so far have come up empty. I need inside dimensions, or what measurements does the inside of a brick side draft need to be? I'm planning on extending the brick through the roof, and then transitioning to a stainless steel stove pipe to get the chimney above the peak of …

Hello everyone. I am seeking some help with my forge hood. it's an overhead hood with the following dimensions : bottom = 840mm, top = 330mm, depth = 700mm. smokeStack is 200mm in diameter and about 5.9 meters tall sticking about 2-3 meters above the tip of my roof and it has two 90(ish) degree bends. the hood is 540mm above my forge. The problem is that the hood is not drawing very well and i am aware that side drafts are better but i thought that now that i have more space i could use an overhead hood with great success, but no, it does not work at all. not when it's cold nor when it's hot. if someone could help me, that would be great. thank…

Smiths, Good morning and happy Friday! I've come up with a plan for my forge's chimney and I wanted to run it by you. Hoping to weed out beginner mistakes and make it a decent first chimney. I'm going to cut a hole in the shingled shed roof, allowing for a 12" 26 gauge galvanized steel pipe (model #10112616bb on Menards' website) to go straight up. There will be no elbows etc.; straight stack. Since the material available at Menards is galvy, I plan to put the pipe that will be closest to the forge in a 5-gallon bucket vinegar bath. I know zinc fumes aren't released until the metal is quite hot, but I'm all about meeting my grandchildren. I'm going to ask the …

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to post this question but I need some help on an incinerator I am building for dealing with the wood waste from a shed company I am with. We purchased a 10' by 20' round tank, 1/4 inch metal on the ends and 3/16 on the cylindrical part. I have it laying on it's side, built short legs for it to keep it from rolling and cut a 12'x6' door in the top of it with a winch and counter weights to open and close the lid. Then I purchased 3/4 inch round fiberglass rope seal and fabricated a groove or a face up (C) to hold the round fire rope in place around the lid to seal the smoke and also install an 8" vent pipe out the o…

Hi to all out there, as many people I have a shop that is nice but space is very limitted. My forge is a very compact one and it is mounted on wheels. So I can move it in the shop around when it´s not in use. The other reason for the movability is that I´m going on markets for craftdemonstrations from time to time... Because I haven´t had a chimney in my shop I have to roll the forge outside, under the free sky and let it run there. Now I like to change this. My idea is to create a chimney thru the sidewall of the shop (indicated on the photo) and to find a way to easily connect/disconnect the hood of the forge to this chimney. The length of the way the smo…

I just picked up a model 660 buffalo further and want to make a replacement hood for it but I can't find any relevant information on how the downdraft hoods were designed, dimensions etc... If anybody has one of these forges and could get me dimensions of detailed pictures of the hood design it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm building a new coal forge and have a large part of a stainless steel drawer that is going to act as a hood. I know it's not the perfect shape but it seems to be about the best I could come up with for no cost. I am a little concerned about the hood being stainless steel; will the stainless give off any sort of toxic gases at a high temperature or anything else hazardous I should know about? I'm not sure what grade of stainless it is. Thanks, Wyatt

Happy Friday, smiths. I'm thinking about my chimney. It currently exists only in my brain, so there are no pictures. Here's the setup: - The forge is an old bottom-blast rivet forge with a Buffalo blower - My shop is a 10' x 8', plywood walls - The doors do not seal at all; wind does not blow through, but it's drafty - I live in Minnesota and hope to forge primarily during the winter; the air outside the shop will be cold - I plan to use mainly charcoal for fuel, but I have access to cheap coal through my local guild - My chimney will be 10" diameter, about 9' long, with a fairly close-set hood So, the question: do you think I'll be able to get …

I need to redo my chimney. I can only find galvanized pipe for it in the size i need. My question is can i paint it to make it safe? I would just chuck it into a vinegar bath but have nothing large enough fo a 6' x 10" pipe. So i was thinking high temp paint. I can get 1200 degree paint but i do not know if that would seal it well enough to keep the fumes down. Thoughts are much welcome.

I need to build a chimney for my new coal forge. Because of the joist spacing and foam insulation in my ceiling, I can't go straight up with my chimney and instead, I would have to go up about 8 feet, then turn 90 deg and head out the wall after about 6 feet of horizontal run. I have read that such a bend would cause poor draft performance. At some of the schools I have attended, they use a mega ventilator (1000's of cfm) mounted inside the pipe just outside the building. All the forges are ganged together and exhaust via this ventilator. I have found these ventilators on Grainger with a CFM range of 750-1400. The concern I have is the max operating temp of these vent…

Do you use a spark arrestor of some kind on your chimney? Does the hat alone seem to do the trick? My chimney will be within ten feet of two trees, neither of which are on my side of the property line. I like my neighbor, so I ask.

I’m a complete beginner when it comes to this hobby, but I’m really keen to get on with it. I have a small forge thats probably around 50cm by 30cm and lots of space however ventilation is giving me some trouble. I have a big stable thats around 2/3 stories high but its only the one floor, and has large doors. Currently I have the forge set up near the stable doors however I've seen a lot of posts about ventilation and I worry that my set up might be terrible. The other alternative is to take it into a building next to the stable however I’m not sure if theres enough airflow there as the room isnt the biggest. (It does have a window and door that provide a straight line o…

I'm wondering how a temporary increase volume affects the draw on a coal forge chimney: A 10" diameter round chimney that goes into a box measuring 14"x"14"x12.5" and then leaving as a 10" round again. Will this a affect the overall draft?

Thanks, IFI and Uri for pics and notes for the side draft chimney. The Wonderhut (16'x16', ht 12') is slowly taking shape. It's a pre-fab metal shed with steel frame and siding. I'm finishing the insulation (walls got rockwool, ceiling got something else) and then will do interior siding, do the electrical, etc., in the next few weeks provided I don't fall of the scaffolding. I like the side draft because I just do not want to go through the roof. Roof penetrations are just asking for trouble here. But I have some questions... Question 1: I think the side draft chimney is going to work well for my charcoal forge. Have I overlooked something regarding chimne…

So, ive got a garage that i am aloud to build a chimney/hood in. Some advice is needed though. Ill get some pictures up for reference kater or tomorrow. Basically its an old golf cart garage for a golf course. Its a big steel building, probably about 70 by 30 feet floor space with probably 20 foot celing at the peak. There are several spots with windows/skylights, whatever its called. One of them doesnt have a window in it towards the back of the building. Its probably about 7 or so feet from the wall. My questions being the best way to hang/mount everything. I can maybe just mount it on the wall and do a 45 degree angle to get to the hole but i know straight is…

I am getting moved into the new shop. I have one of my two coal forges here now, but not quite set on how to vent it. This side of the building has an attic so my preference is to go through the wall with something like Uri Hoffi's flues. I have parts for a " super sucker" that I never got completed, but don't know if I want the ceiling/ roof penetrations in this metal building. Flue parts have always kind of thrown me as I have never been able to source parts bigger than 8 inch. Is there somewhere I can get 12 inch flue pipe?

A couple of years ago in another thread Frosty said this: Use a T on the outside 90* one arm points downwards the other upwards to the rain cap and the horizontal run from your hood enters the leg. Envision a capital T on it's side coming out of a forge hood. How this works is first it prevents cold air from filling and blocking the stack so your hood will draw as soon as warm air enters it. It's other function is to give down drafts an easy route out, they'll go straight down rather than make the turn and travel horizontally against rising hot air. Lastly it eliminates the need for a rain cap, any that falls in will just keep going very VERY little will make the tu…

Hello. I've read a lot recently about the super sucker forge hood and I've got some plans, but I need to hear from you guys before I start messing around in our shop. But first, some context: I forge in a family owned foundry (building that focuses on casting is called that, right?) that my father works in from time to time. The picture illustrates one part of the building where the oven and chimney is located. The oven has a main opening with double doors and a smaller door (marked in blue) that's never used anymore. I drew the room in Paint.net since there's so much stuff laying around that's in the way... So: when I want to forge, I move my abomination of a f…
