Chimneys, Hoods, and Stacks

  1. Started by Ben_C,

Question about what material to use for a forge chimney. I have recently completed my new blacksmithing shop all I need to add is the forge chimney and I am stuck. Im planning on do something like this I Forge Iron*-* BP0394 Side Draft Forge. No my question is what to use for the bigger pipe that goes up through the ceiling and where to get it. None of the hardwares stores near me seems to have pipe larger than 10 inch and even if they did im not certain what I should get.

Are chimney fires a concern when using a forge? We normally associate chimney fires with fire places in the home, and burning wood. But what about burning coal, charcoal, coke etc in the forge? Do these fuels create creosote or other materials that can collect in a chimney and create a fire?

Let's talk forge chimneys. A forge chimney is needed to move the smoke from the fire either out of our way, or out of the building. Straight is better than bent, and bigger is better, to some extent. * No one mentions that the amount of smoke coming out the chimney is the same as the amount of cold air coming into the building. To save a little of the warmth in the work area, should we pipe in cold air to the forge blower and into the forge for burning the fuel? * Does a chimney cap prevent down drafts or rain from entering the chimney and draining down onto and into the forge? Does it act as a restriction to the chimney draft? Which chimney cap is best for the chi…

I've been lurking on this forum for a while. makes me drool looking at some of your forges. iI've got a small portable one but I'm wanting to build a stationary one. the building to house it in is already up. I like the looks of the brick side draft forges but don't have enough bricks and besides that I don't like brick work. Have any of you built them with cement blocks and then gone on up with the cement blocks for the chimney. What size should the chimney be. 12".. other than the forge pot can I make the table out of chimney brick or maybe even pour from cement?? I'm still quite amateur at this even though I've played around at blacksmithing off and on for 2…

WIll this work? From foor to top of the roof is 16 feet. the chinney will go up the wall about 6 or 8 feet off the top of the forge table, then elbow out the wall then elbow up again and go to 4 feet above roofline. Stovepipe is 10 inch single wall. the opening in the chimney for the side draft is less than the area of the ID of the pipe.

Well, I've moved into a building. Its concrete walls, dirt floor, big doors for ventilation (barn) basically perfect. Except I have no way to get the smoke, from my coal forge, out of the building. So lately I just set my forge outside the door and use it like that. The stainless steel sidedraft hood that I have would be perfect in every aspect but I am allowed in this building only if I'm not going to damage the property. Such as cutting a hole in the ceiling and feeding a pipe through for my hood.... So I am left with a dillema which I am not sure how to fix. How do I get the smoke out of the building. There are 2' long by 1 foot high windows ever 10 feet or so …

Hey all, I'm now starting to think about how I want to build a small backyard forge. A few people have mentioned advantages of a more european style side draft forge. (Things like clinker not blocking your air intake, etc..) I've done a fair amount of searching online, but all I find is side draft forge chimneys. Does anyone have any good resources for actual side draft forges? I know that I have seen some before, but I haven't been able to find them recently.. Does anyone have any opinions about side draft forges that they would care to share?

  9. Where does one go to figure out how to correctly cut a hole in their roof, put a chimney flue in for a side-draft forge, and make it weather tight and sound so that it doesn't burn one's barn down? rvb

The shell of my new shop is nearing completion... we'll probably start on the standing seam roof later this coming week(using the tools we made!). I now have to actually think about setting up the forge. I do not want to go through the roof. The forge will be against the end wall and I expect to put the chimney on the outside, extending above the roof line. The chimney will have to be over 20' high. Sooo.... I'm interested in recommendations. The current direction of my line of thinking is standard block chimney with standard flue liner, with a 'T' for the forge duct. It means two right angles, but should still draw if its big enough. I'll post pictures of what …

  11. I'm using 10" stainless ductwork for my forge chimney. Does anyone know if I can safely use ordinary mild steel for hangers and brackets? I have this nagging feeling that I read something somewhere about inducing corrosion in the stainless if you do that. Some of the brackets will be outside, exposed to the weather. If the contact of S/S and M/S is a bad idea, can I get away with cutting strips from one piece of the stainless duct as a sacrificial buffer between the duct and the bracket? :?:
