Events, Hammer ins, Where to meet

  1. Started by ThomasPowers,

Quad-State info has been posted to the web at: http://sofablacksmiths.org/conference2012/2012index.htm

  2. Started by Unforgivun,

Ok, some of us chat regularly and know a few of us who will be attending, but I thought it would be good to have a post so we would all have a good idea as to who we might get to meet by attending. My brother in law and I will be there. We plan to bring a few tools (we may have to make some) to teach (to the best of Jeff's ability) the process on how to make small copper boxes.

I can't seem to e-mail anyone from sofa and get info on this years event...fees and camping fees

  4. Started by clinton,

I was contacted by Glenn Recently and I guess somehow my name came up in putting together a group photo at the conference. So I would like to get some input from those who plan to attend and would like to get in the photo. I did this at the Memphis conference two years ago and we had mixed results. It is not easy to get everyone together at one time with all the activity going on. So some ideas from people who want to participate in the group photo would be great, maybe some pre-planning will help make this run a little smoother. I will be arriving in Rapid City on Wed July 18, so anyone that wants to join me for a cold beer will be able to find me there. I will be wear…

  6. Started by CurlyGeorge,

Went to Pontiac, ILL this morning and got to meet Randy McDaniel, (Randy, on IFI). He was the guest demonstrator for the Illinois Valley Blacksmith Assoc. conference at Threshermen's Park in Pontiac. Took a couple of pics of him doing a demo of a sunflower leaf. He also showed how he made the pineapple for the gate, (Remember his post on that?). Also got to meet 781, while there. Had a great time but had to leave early because of a prior commitment. So I didn't get to see his afternoon demo. 781 was taking video of the demos, so maybe he will post them. While I was there, I just had to try holding this anvil. Looked like a real one. Even had the "patina". But i…

  9. Started by Ian,

Greetings all! After a rather protracted break (for me at least) I and my fellow partner in Blacksmithing crime Mr Sean Marshall, Esquire have decided it's time to go walk about. We're travelling to Australia on the 17th of May and will be there from the 17th of May until the 12th of July (although we're seriously considering hopping over to New Zealand for a week or so and coming back to Oz for the 12th, if there are any Kiwi's who read this and wouldn't mind us camping on their lawns....hint, hint) On the 12th of July we're going to be flying over to the good old U.S of A. That's right boys and girls, after talking about it for some time I'm finally going to hit t…

  12. I want to let everyone know about the upcoming Toby Hickman Power Hammer Clinic put on by the California Blacksmiths Association! There is still one slot available for a participant and several places available for those who want to watch. I was an observer last year and felt I got way more than my moneys worth. This year, lunch is included in the price. I also said for the next clinic I want to work on the hammer!!! Toby is a master on the power hammer. He will go over the "hit-Turn" method and various tooling. I don't know what all he will cover but last years participants went home with several tools and a wealth of knowledge. Not to be missed if you have or are in t…

Well I'm off to Quad-State after work today---by way of several sets of kids and grand kids so I won't get there till Wednesday or Thursday. Anyone else going? (By a stroke of luck my disreputable red hat turned up---even more disreputable than before!)

  18. Started by rthibeau,

Sir Ted Throckmorton in Utah is one of the nicest people on IFI. We should have a hammer-in at his place so that he can experience the full IFI ambiance. Sometime in June 2012, after the details get worked out, we can all meet at the Salt Lake City airport, convoy up to Ted's and have a wonderful weekend. We will need to find our own accommadations or tent out nearby. This will all be worked out beforehand, but we need to have an idea how many people might attend. so anyone interested, please post to this thread and we shall see how this might be accomplished. Details will be forthcoming.

  19. Started by LDW,

Brian and I arrived at the Little Log Cabin grounds Wed., afternoon and set up shop. Thursday morning we were off and forging. 10 stations were set up and 20 people were fully involved in some heavy forging. We all had a great time. Good food, good people, and I think every student had a brain resembling a big sponge. We hope they all soaked in as much as they could stand. The people showed great interest, and were very appreciative. I can see why Brian enjoys sharing what he has learned over the years. When people can truly want to learn it shows in what they produce, and these guys produced. Hot Cuts, cupping tools, hammers, punches, top and bottom fullers. It was grea…

The 5th annual "Trying-It" hammerin weekend for 2011 wll be scheduled as usual on the 3rd weekend of Aug which this year will fall on Aug 19, 20, 21 (Fri - Sun) . This is the same weekend as the annual 5-day American Threshermen Steam and Antique Tractor show just 7 miles south in Pinckneyville, thus most motels are fully booked within the Pinckneyville region. The great flea market at the steam show is well worth a look too. Past years I have acquired a complete forge table and a 6" post vise, both considered to have been bought at bargain prices! This hammerin is on our 80-acre farm so bring a tent and you and yours should surely be able to find a cozy place here to p…
