Balcones Forge is a Central Texas Blacksmith Association. Our annual Bluebonnet Demo will be held at the Sycamore Creek Ranch just out of Marble Falls, Texas from Tuesday, March 25 through Sunday March 30. The featured instructor/demonstrator is Mark Aspery and he will be teaching "Joinery" and "Forge Welding" Tuesday through Friday with the demonstrations held on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a great barbeque dinner on Saturday followed by the Auction. This promises to be another great event. Of the 40 workshop openings, there are a few left for the Tuesday session. Hey folks! This is not quite a blacksmithing event, but there IS molten iron involved. Tomorrow at the Franconia Sculpture Garden in Skandia, MN there is a free iron pour going on! As I understand it, artists will be using/creating molds and then filling them with the good stuff. The event is from 12-5. Franconia Sculpture Park 29836 St. Croix Trail Franconia, MN 55074 For a point of reference, this is about forty-five minutes northeast of the Twin Cities. I got a last minute invite from a close friend and we drove up for the day on Saturday. If you have the opportunity to go to a hammer in. It will be a great experience. I got to see a starburst Damascus pattern billet be made. I met some great folks and got to drool over some really detailed work. I had a lot of fun. Ron uses the iron in the hat to pay for his hammer in every year so there is not really a cover charge. I did not go home with a hammer in prize but I definetly feel like I won something.

I don't know about any of the other demonstrators but I am first on Friday starting at 8:00 until 10:00. I will be demonstrating how I make a Rail Road Spike Knife. I have won the "Best Rail Road Spike Knife" contest at the Batson Blade Symposium in 2012 and 2013. The knives are different from the typical RR Spike knife and I have some informative processes that I use. The processes are applicable to knifemaking even when not using RR Spikes. Come and have a good time and maybe learn something.
