Greetings from just slightly East of the Mississippi River. I didn't quite know where to place this post so I'll apologize first and let it rip(please move it to a more appropriate place if I misjudged where to place it). I would be seeking some assistance from anyone near the Mt. Vernon area. Here's the story. I found my favorite welder for sale in your area. It is paid for and I'm not really keen on driving 4680 plus miles to pick it up. I mean I like it and all but that's quite a drive. I would certainly be willing to fairly compensate some adventurous soul to take a pallet and some banding material, packing blankets , foam ratchet straps or any other suitable material…

  5. http://canironx.ca/ I just found out about this event. The lineup of demonstrators is about the best anyone will ever find ever. I am deciding if I will make it up there, probably with my wife, for a few days of demos, and a nice vacation around the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Early registration discount ends Feb 1.

  6. I'm at the Balcones Forge meeting at the Boerne Agricultural Heritage Museum and the Blacksmith shop at this place is really neat! I have around 40 pics and I'm not sure if I should post that many, but here are a few. That post vice is huge. Bigger than the pic makes it look. I won the handled hot cut and hatchet in the auction. I have more great pics but I don't know if I should post that many?

  7. Started by fencing12,

Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death, but I want to get into blacksmithing, and want to take a basic course before I build my own forge. Are there any courses around Chicago, or people who would be willing to teach me? I'm 17 by the way. Thanks

  8. Can anybody direct me to members of the Blacksmith's Guild of the Potomac on I forge Iron? I am just starting out and would like to join the guild, but have some questions. Thanks.

  9. I had no idea about his holiday, where smiths open up their shops to the public, but Bill K (madwing) convinced me to drive down to Russell's shop in Watsonville for the day. Got there early and help Russell scroll the ends of some 10 foot bars for a gate project, and by the time Bill and Dovid arrived, the 100 lb propane tank was plumbed in and the Anyang 88 was warmed up. We got a few members of the public, drawn by Dovid's giant anvil signs planted out on the road, but mostly is was us four. Russell showed off his specialty, stainless mesh layered with copper wire trimmings and bronze, heated with a torch and driven into a die with a power hammer. Bill, with his tend…

  10. NEB has initiated a Youth Sponsorship Program in order to introduce young people to Blacksmithing. Our current sponsorship provides funds for 1 year membership and attendance to their choice of a Spring or Fall Meet. The purpose of this discussion is to solicit those in the Blacksmithing community for their thoughts and ideas on encouraging young people to join their group. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance, Steve C.

  11. Come on out and say hello at NJRF! We have just 2 weekend's left. I'm demonstrating knife making down in the central area of grounds and there's a new smith near the entrance demonstrating some metal art and household forgings. Of course there's knights, wine, wenches, thieving gypsies, pirates and bacon wrapped turkey legs as well! In addition to demonstrating I'm always more than willing to talk about blacksmithing, bladesmithing, alchemy and problem solving for hours on end plus I've got a few copies of Steve Sells book on hand for those who have been thinking of picking it up! I'd love to meet more of the IFI crowd in person, hope to see you there! For more info go to…

  19. As many of you know, I relocated to Kalamazoo about 1.5 years ago, and in the process built a new shop etc.. Well I have now been requested to host a meet at my place. I have hosted other meets in NY, but in this group, when you host, you demonstrate. So the shop cleanup and rearrangement has begun. The group consistantly has 35-50 people at their functions, and of course you want it comfortable for all. So on top of panicking about the demo, I am worked up about making space for food tables et. al. I am comfortable in front of crowds, but many of the smiths in this group make my best efforts look feeble, these are some seriously talented people. Thank God I have enough t…

This years event is going to be Friday, 1/9/2015 dinner time, to Sunday, lunch time, 1/11/15 at Dave Hutchinson's farm in Cordova, Md. They are now taking registration. Information is on the MASA website. I will be there with my Fisher label shirts and mini anvils for sale, and to enjoy the camaraderie. There is always a great group of people there. If you can make it down, it is well worth the trip. And they usually have a great demonstrator.
