Gas Forges

I have been asked to look at natural gas forges. This is for a university art metals studio, mostly small scale stuff, a knifemakers or slightly larger would be about the right size. I know that I can make one, I made mine at home, but this is for work, I think at least partially for liability a commercial made forge is desired. I also suspect that for most users propane is the preferred fuel, again that’s what I use at home, but at the university we have access to natural gas, it runs the sculpture studios melting furnace, gas kilns in the ceramics studio, so I assume high pressure, but will check and we have a line in the art metals studio for a large annealing torch an…

Hello Folks, Just finished my gas forge and fired her up for the first time.Used a 9kg gas bottle for the body and an old fan from a Volkswagen motor. No jets used, just a 1/2 inch gate valve to control the gas and 1 1/2 inch valve for the air flow.Once I got the mixture right ( after scaring myself a few times ) it heated steel up to white heat running at about 2-3 psi with the gas tap just open, think I'll put a valve off an oxy torch on it for finer gas control and a solenoid shut off valve in case the power fails to the blower. :confused:Can't remember how to put photo's here so I've put them in the gallery section.

hey can anyone teach me how to set up a propane line for my forge? (it's in an old cast iron chimenea) thanks cal-k

Just finished building an lpg gas forge with blower .Tried it out today and it works fine ,red-yellow heat very quickly at 5 psi but have read that there is a safety risk if the blower cuts out while the forge is going . Has anyone had experience with this or know about it? Can I do anything to make the forge safer?:confused:

I am looking to buy a propane fired forge. Was thinking about NC's Whisper Baby (single burner) or the Whisper Momma (two burner). The unit will be used for small stuff and heat treatment of lock parts. I do not intend to get into forge welding. I build muzzleloading rifles and wish to make my own locks from time to time. Pluss other odds and ends. Just looking for some expierience based observations on these units. BJH

Goodmorning guys ! I would make a gas forge, for my small private activity, but I don’t know the potential of side arm burner of zoller or t-rex. My hypothetical forge must have this dimensions : 50 x 30 x 20 mm This forge is the best in italy for small activity : Forno AR/1 from www.ARitalia.it but it’s expensive If I buy your side arm burner, I should rebluild the same as carateristic of this commercial gas forge ? i built a forge........err am in the process of assembling the forge...heres what i did, i got a hold of 3 small gas grill sized propane tanks, cracked the valves blew em out removed two valves. on one tanks i cut off the top and bottom till it was just a big pipe basically, cut off the valve side of the other, then welded to the one i cut both sides off of, put a 1,16th gap in the square joint and welded it full with a mig, then i cut the bottom off the third one, leaving the propane valve still in tact, and welded that with the same procedure to the middle tank...so its long enough to what ever i want....i should mention that i put an "easy access" door on side that g…

Hello all, for about three hours now, I have been looking through threads and sites and the internet and am now wanting to build a small propane forge for small objects, like RR Spikes, Short Stock, etc... I have a basic understanding of what I will need to use and do. It's going to have a close back with a slide down door on the front that goes about 3/4 of the ways down. Probably about 10 or 12 inches long, 8 or 10 inches in diameter. Will use kaowool and that ceramic brick for the bottom. got my new miniforge (6" dia X 10" long) fired up the other day using an oliver upwind burner....was at welding heat in under 10 minutes and i didnt even use ITC-100. Now i just have to tune my two burner forge to get that kinda heat outa it. pics enclosed if anyone is interested. btw i used a #60 as the orifice not the 57-58 he recommends.

Hi all, I guess this post will serve as an introduction too. I'm just getting into blacksmithing and I want to set up a small shop in my basement. I've taken a class, and will be taking a few more after Christmas, unfortunately, the school is over an hour away from my house.. so, I really need something at home to work with. Originally I was thinking a coal forge, but because of the cramped area and less than favorable ventilation I'm leaning towards gas now. Could someone tell me if it would be better to hook the forge up to the natural gas line in my house or to just get some canisters of propane? hey i have a propane forge ive been using it for about 3 years, and the burners on it stink, i mean pretty bad, did not know what i was doing when i made them, i have lurned alot about them since then, i plan on making some new ones now and want to build something similar to the T rex burners, i can see that it has a 3/4 neck, about 9 - 10 in long, also that it its lathed at the air intake, the bell that reduces to the neck, then welded to a larger pipe that has fore slotted holes, it has a sliding air cover, that back cap it just welded on, but how dose the back intake tighten to the little gas jet, its some kind of fitting that shrinks as it scrues in, and what type of …

I live in a fairly densely populated neighborhood of North Las Vegas and in order to curtail my run-ins with Johnny Law, I've decided that it's probably easier to go with a gas forge. I'm looking to do mainly small pieces - leather working tools, furniture hardware, etc., - so I'm not concerned about the capacity limitations of the forge. I'm mostly concerned about efficiency. There's a propane refilling station within walking distance, which is good, as every vehicle I own is two-wheeled. But I don't necessarily want to be running over there three or four times a day. gas forge project ....its about 24" x 16" diam...... made from a long propane tank...the other half with the feet (it was a large verticle tank) has become the beefiest trash can in my shop filled it with water prior to cutting, to make sure nothing would explode...... its kinda big, but i plan to shrink the interior space as needed with insulation. the front door will be made with insulation bricks so i can easily adapt the opening size. the back of the tank is closed.....i might open it up later so i can feed stuff through though will get 3 Reil style burners fed from 2 propane tanks......i'll have an idle loop and valves cuz i dont plan to run all 3 burners al…

I'm thinking about building me a gas forge, but I want to get a good idea of what I'm looking at in terms of fuel consumption and efficiency. What are the dimensions of your forge? How many burners do you use? What PSI do you forge at, and if you weld, what do you take it up to? What size and how long does a bottle of propane typically last you? How long does it take your forge to get up to temp? Is it naturally aspirated or blown? If there's anything else that could be considered pertinent, I'd be much obliged if you shared it.

My father and I are finishing up a project that has taken us for ever to complete, being a gas forge.. We took a 12in diamater tube and lined it with kaol wool, and refractory cement.. so it was done right.. Then we got a venturi blower from a friend of ours who is a brilliant inventor, but seems to have skimped on his blower designs.. We are running it without a regulator, which may be part of the problem.. but when we do use the reg, not nearly enough pressure is built up to acchieve the venturi effect.. And when we do get it going, the flame spurts, and is not constant.. I can only hit about an oarnge red heat, which sucks.. so basically, why cant I get above red/ora…

Hello all. I have been doing some research on possibly constructing my own gas fired forge. It seems that alot of folks have enjoyed alot of success with them. The question that I need help with is this. I noticed that that most homemade and "factory" built gassers use Kaowool or the like as a liner. And of course, I have seen a fair hand full made with good old fire brick. What is the advantage of the Kaowool? Or, is a firebrick construction type just as serviceable? hi all, i've been awhile in this forum but this is my first post.. i got a quick question regarding bernzomatic torches.. the other day i went to tools shop and there's JTH7 and the latest product from them TS8000T.. i was wondering which one is hotter than the other.. i'm planning to make a small gas forge, and i'm going to need the torch for that application.. does the gas forge oxidize the steel more than the charcoal forge that causing the steel lose the carbon more quickly than charcoal forge?? thanks rama

well i have been using a benzy but after taking it to a 20# tank with a adapter was running very reducing. Lots o dragons breath. I had bought a jumbo torch from benzo thinking it would be better since it says 4x the heat of a regular torch buts its not. I had drilled the hole out on my mini to fit the bigger jumbo head.I tried the turbo to compare then, I noticed after pulling the turbo torch out as i got near the end of the torch the thing roared up the dragon breath went away and it got much hotter. Seamed like it was suckin air thru the excess hole i had drilled in the mini. I went to the hardware store and got a T and some nipple and a reducer to fit the torch hea…

I have been puzzling the possibilities of making a gas forge in my cellar. I have 8 ft clearance cement floor and 2 ft thick stone walls. Since I'm putting in propane anyway and I have a 7 in chimney just stairing at me, what size vent do you use for a gas forge. Its warmer in winter than the wood barn. But my concerns are the dust in the house and fumes. Coal forge in the barn in winter aein't warm nuff.......Duck

Hi All, I'm trying to build a small gas forge. I read a few designs on the Internet so I went out a got a 13-gallon air compressor tank it is 24" long and 12" diameter I cut one end off already. My question is how long should I make the forge. I plan to but a 2" or 3" of insulation in the forge. Any help or recommendations are welcome. Thanks,

I saved the 3 burner set from my old worn out NC whisper Daddy. Has anyone tried these burners on a freon tank forge? Would these three burners be too much for a forge this size? Would I be better off to just weld up a new steel box the approximate size of the original & line it with 1" firebrick?
